Tesla planned to start build the upcoming Model Y crossover SUV at Gigafactory 1 by June 1, 2020, but has since changed those plans, according to a report from Business Insider.
The report, citing internal documents given to Tesla employees a few weeks before the company’s October earnings, said the carmaker planned to produce 7,000 Model Y SUVs a week in Nevada by December 2020, and 5,000 Model Ys a week at its planned Gigafactory in China by February 2021.
A Tesla representative told Business Insider that “the timelines and information shared here are outdated.”
The Model Y is expected to be built on the Model 3 platform, which the company hopes will make production more efficient. The design is also expected to to have similarities to the Model 3. The company has released teaser photos of the Model Y, but it’s difficult to glean much from the shadowy images.
Elon Musk said on the company’s Q3 earnings call that he has approved the Model Y prototype for production.
