Model Y Production ‘Likely’ at Gigafactory 1

Tesla plans to achieve “volume production” of the upcoming Model Y electric crossover by “the end of 2020,” according to a shareholder letter released Wednesday.

The company added that production for the Model Y will happen “most likely at Gigafactory 1″ in Nevada.

Tesla had not previously discussed a U.S. production facility for the Model Y, only that Model Y production is slated for the Gigafactory 3 that broke ground in China this month.

Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk tweeted in October that he had approved Model Y prototype designs for production.

The Model Y is expected to be built on the Model 3 platform, which the company hopes will make production more efficient. The design is also expected to to have similarities to the Model 3. The company has released teaser photos of the Model Y, but they don’t offer much.

The design approved by Musk is expected to be unveiled in March.
