Coronavirus Epidemic Delays Model 3 Deliveries in China

Tesla is delaying deliveries of Model 3 from Giga Shanghai as the country tries to contain the deadly coronavirus.

Giga Shanghai has been closed for about two weeks following government guidelines.

“The proposed delivery (of cars) in early February will be delayed,” Tao Lin, vice president at Tesla, published on microblogging service Weibo, according to reports. “We will catch up the production line once the outbreak situation gets better.”

The Model 3 program in China has had an exciting start with the construction of a Gigafactory and a first run of cars in about a year. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk helped celebrate the factory opening last month with a presentation for Chinese Tesla workers and new Model 3 owners.

Tesla eventually plans to build both the Model 3 and Model Y at the Shanghai factory. The company hopes to ramp up production to 250,000 units next year.
