Report: Tesla May Reduce Fremont Staff by 75%

A report from Bloomberg says Tesla has a plan to reduce staff at at its Fremont, Calif. factory by about 75% to to help fight the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

Ray Kelly, the spokesman for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, told Bloomberg that Tesla will reduce its staff from 10,000 to 2,500. The move comes after a morning memo to Tesla employees instructing those with an “essential function” to continue reporting to work.

The county issued a health order that says businesses deemed non-essential are restricted to “minimum basic operations.”

“We had a positive conversation, and it sounds like they are beginning to comply with the health order,” Kelly told Bloomberg. “In war times, all automakers are considered vital national infrastructure, but this is a different era. This is a health pandemic.”

Tesla builds the Model S, Model 3, and Model Y at the Fremont plant.
