How to Make Your Tesla a Cleaner, Safer Place

We all do our best to follow CDC hygiene guidelines, feel confident that our hand washing technique has been perfected, and have a favorite 20-second song to prove it. But what else will help make your Tesla safer in a COVID-19 world? We’ve got helpful ideas for you.

Disinfect Your Interior

Right now, it’s smart to beware of dirty surfaces. Stay on the safe side and disinfect the surface of all touchpoints in your Tesla’s interior: steering wheel and controls, door handles, buttons, touchscreen, seatbelt clasps, and your entire dash. Wear gloves as you do this, make it a regular habit, and be sure to choose products that won’t damage sensitive materials such as touchscreens and leather. If you’re not sure what to use, read labels carefully first and check out this list of effective cleaners for coronaviruses from the American Chemistry Council.

Remember The Exterior

The outside of your Tesla is less likely to carry a coronavirus, because sun and weather can shorten its life. Still, knowing that one study found a coronavirus can survive on “inanimate surfaces like metal, glass or plastic for up to nine days,” it’s better to take precautions. Use a disinfecting cleaner regularly on exterior touch points such as door, hood and trunk handles. Watch out for charging connectors and shared items at charging locations and car washes too. Wipe them down before use, apply hand sanitizer before and after contact, or both.

Keep Supplies Handy

It’s easier to keep things clean if you have supplies at the ready. Stock your Tesla with these items:

  • Tissues & Trash Bag – for coughs and sneezes; discard tissues in the trash bag after use and empty daily
  • Sanitizing Wipes – for regular touchpoint wipe downs; be careful about bleach as it can damage leather
  • Hand Sanitizer – for charging up, post-sneeze cleanup, kiddos and more; make sure it contains at least 60% alcohol

Safeguard Your Passengers

Kids are less attentive to hygiene, and so are more likely to be carriers of infection. As we live through COVID-19, it’s important to keep this in mind. Each time kids are in and out of your Tesla, they could be unknowingly contaminating it, even if they never get sick. So make a point to disinfect carefully when kids ride in your Tesla – especially if you also give rides to high risk passengers, such as people over 60 or with underlying health conditions.

Disinfecting and distancing are important right now, in your personal life and as you work with auto service providers such as PPF installers. Fortunately, many businesses are reopening with new safety precautions in place. Share your plans, products and safety strategies in the comments.
