When new Tesla owners recently reported faster performance from updated Media Control Units, many owners of older cars were quick to ask for a retrofit option. Elon Musk confirmed today that a hardware option will be made available.
Tesla has replaced the NVIDIA Tegra-3 chip in the MCU with a more powerful Intel x86_64 processor. Owners have noticed faster, more responsive touchscreens compared to older Teslas.
Yes, you can upgrade hardware, although we also wrote software to accelerate rendering on old MCU. Coming out soon & makes a big diff.

In a bonus for Model S and Model X owners who weren’t interested in a hardware upgrade, Musk also said a software update will be released for NVIDIA Tegra-3-powered vehicles that is expected to make a “big difference.”
Musk didn’t offer a specific timeline for the software release beyond “soon.”
