Tesla Batteries Give the California Power Grid a Boost

Tesla partnered with electric utility company Southern California Edison (SCE) to bring one of the world’s largest electron-storing sites into operation in three months, half the original estimated time.

The facility was dedicated on January 30 at the facility in Ontario, Calif., 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

The 1.5 acre lot of Powerpacks exists to capture surplus energy from the grid before it dissipates. Without such a system, any extra electricity is lost. The battery storage enables the utility to deliver energy from the Powerpacks in the event of an outage or stress on the grid.

The facility has the capability to power roughly 15,000 homes for upwards of four hours during maximum energy usage periods.
