Big changes have been made to Tesla’s Autopilot team.
VP of Autopilot Software Chris Lattner has left the company, tweeting that Tesla was not a good fit. New to the company is deep learning and computer vision expert Andrej Karpathy, who most recently worked at OpenAI, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence nonprofit.
Karpathy’s title will be Director of AI and Autopilot Vision, reporting directly to Musk.
Karpathy completed his computer vision PhD at Stanford University, where he leveraged a deep neural net to produce complex descriptions of images. An example provided in a statement from Tesla was identifying not simply that there is a cat in a given picture, but that it is an orange, spotted cat, riding on a skateboard with red wheels on brown hardwood flooring. Karpathy also taught “Convolutional Neural Networks for Visual Recognition,” the first deep learning course at Stanford.
