Tesla Remotely Extends Range To Help Owners Escape Hurricane Irma

In an effort to help owners in Hurricane Irma’s evacuation zone, Tesla has released a software update for them to increase the range in their Model S/X 60/60D vehicles.

Cars with a 75 kWh battery pack were previously software limited to 210 miles of driving range per single charge and will now get 249 miles, the full range capacity of the battery.

Sawyer888, a TMC Member in South Florida, posted the following note he received from Tesla explaining the update.

Exceptional Circumstances in Florida​

We at Tesla hope that you and your loved ones are safe while preparing for the hurricanes approaching Florida.

Due to these exceptional circumstances, and to help you better prepare to evacuate and get to safety, your vehicle has been adjusted at no cost to you to temporarily access the additional battery capacity until September 16th. You will notice the badging on the instrument cluster will read 75 during this period. We hope that this allows you to travel to your next destination with confidence and ease.

Hurricane Irma came ashore in Florida on Sunday, with the full intensity of the storm hitting the Florida Keys and likely up the state’s western coastline. About 5.6 million people have been asked to evacuate.
