Tesla said Monday it will produce a China-only version of the Model S and Model X with a dual charge port design that supports the country’s GB/T DC fast charging standard and Superchargers.
The new ports will be located in the same common location for gas tank doors on the side of the vehicle. Tesla plans to provide adapters at no charge to customers that own the earlier versions of the Model S and Model X.
The GB is a proprietary standard developed by the Chinese government, which has plans to build 12,000 new charging stations across the country to support 5 million new EVs. The integration of GB into Tesla cars gives customers access to a vastly larger charging network.
