Tesla is bringing back a referral program a few months after saying it was too costly to operate.
Under the terms of the restructured program, every customer a Tesla owner refers will earn both people 1,000 miles of free use of the Supercharger charging network and will enter the referrer into a monthly drawing for a special edition of the Model Y crossover and quarterly chance for a second generation Tesla Roadster, each signed by Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk and Chief Designer Franz Von Holshauzen.
Referrals can only be used for vehicles ordered under new pricing that started Thursday.
The previous version of the program, which ended last month, gave owners six months of free Supercharging and the chance to earn awards ranging from to wheels to Tesla event invites to a free car. Some owners also received free unlimited Supercharging under an early version of the program, so they will instead have two chances to win a new vehicle in each period.
Owners who win a prize will be disqualified from a second reward.
“While our previous Referral Program was very successful, it came with significant costs, and ending the program last year allowed us to pass those savings along to customers,” Tesla said in a blog post. “We’ve since restructured the program to save the company money while also offering rewards that are super exclusive.”

Related vehicle order must be placed after March 21, 2019. Referred vehicle orders must be delivered to qualify for awards. Model Y and used vehicle orders are not eligible. New or leased Model S, Model X and Model 3 orders are eligible. Referral code must be applied at the time of order and cannot be added after the order has been placed. Founders Series Model Y drawings happen on a monthly basis with the first drawing occurring on/around May 1, 2019. Founders Series Roadster drawings occur on a quarterly basis with the first drawing occurring on/around July 1, 2019. Credits awarded for qualifying referrals are valid for 12 months from the credit award date and can be used toward services, vehicle accessories or new Tesla products. Referral credits cannot be applied against solar lease or power purchase agreement payments. Free Supercharging miles will apply to any vehicles on the same account, and expire 3 years after the most recent miles are added.Must be at least 18 years old to be eligible for awards. No entry fee, payment or purchase required for the drawing. A random drawing will be held on or around July 1, 2019 to determine the winner. The winner will be contacted thereafter. Awards are non-transferable and not redeemable for cash. The customer is responsible for all taxes and local requirements and fees. Program and awards are conditional on and subject to local laws and regulations. Unfortunately, Ohio and Virginia residents are not eligible for referrer awards.
The customer may not be an employee, legal representative or partner of Tesla or any Affiliate of Tesla. Nothing in the Referral Program shall be deemed to create any kind of relationship between the referrer and Tesla or any of Tesla’s Affiliates. The referrer has no authority to represent or bind Tesla. Terms and conditions are subject to change.

Each referral also gives you a chance to win a Founder’s Series Model Y monthly and a Founder’s series Roadster supercar quarterly, both signed by Elon Musk and Franz von Holzhausen. Tesla owners who already have unlimited Supercharging get two chances to win with each referral.
