Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 Going Up at Impressive Pace

Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China is taking form at Ludicrous speed.

Construction of the 865,000 square meter Gigafactory 3 began only in December and is nearly complete. The massive factory will house production of the Model 3 and Model Y, as well as battery packs for vehicles. Musk has said that going forward, all factories will build both batteries and cars.

Videos of the factory’s construction shared online show the structure as almost finished. Tesla is already installing production equipment including “stamping machines, and the paint shop,” Chief Executive Elon Musk said last week during the company’s shareholders meeting.

Musk said the factory will likely be completed by the end of the summer, a feat Musk said could be a record time for bringing a car factory online.

The contractor on the project is China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd., a unit of state-owned China State Construction Engineering.

Musk said Tesla wants to build 3,000 Model 3s per week at Gigafactory 3 by the end of this year.
