GM and LG to Partner on Battery Factory

Cadillac furthered its recent product blitz today with the reveal of the brand’s first EV. This will be the first model derived from GM’s future EV platform. GM announced on Friday that Cadillac will be at the vanguard of the company’s move towards an all-electric future.

General Motors and LG Chem announced today a partnership to mass-produce battery cells for future battery-electric vehicles.

The companies intend to invest up to $2.3 billion through a new, equally owned joint venture company, which will establish a battery cell assembly plant in the Lordstown area of Northeast Ohio. The plant is expected to create more than 1,100 new jobs.

“With this investment, Ohio and its highly capable workforce will play a key role in our journey toward a world with zero emissions,” GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra said in a release. “Combining our manufacturing expertise with LG Chem’s leading battery-cell technology will help accelerate our pursuit of an all-electric future. We look forward to collaborating with LG Chem on future cell technologies that will continue to improve the value we deliver to our customers.”

The plan builds on GM’s $28 million investment in its Warren, Michigan battery lab announced late last year.

GM has announced plans to continue to expand its all-electric offerings, including EVs from Cadillac and “an all-new battery-electric truck coming in the fall of 2021.”
