Tesla will invest in a new vehicle to be designed and produced in China for worldwide consumption, Chief Executive Elon Musk said Tuesday at an event at Gigafactory 3.
“I think something that would be super cool would be to – and so we’re gonna do it, we’re gonna try to do it – would be to create a China design and engineering center to actually design an original car in China for worldwide consumption,” Musk said. “I think this will be very exciting.”
Musk went on to say he thinks China has some of the best art in the world, which would be represented in a Tesla vehicle designed in China.
He did not elaborate on what kind of vehicle he has in mind other than it should be “something kind of radical, like Cybertruck.”
The only other vehicle that Musk has previously mentioned is a compact car. He said in 2018 that he expected the company to produce a compact car in less than five years, but we haven’t heard much about it since.
