Tesla is planning a monthly subscription offering for its Full Self-Driving option, Chief Executive Elon Musk said in a tweet.
Tesla released the FSD beta this week to drivers it has identified as cautious. The company will continue to deploy the software to more drivers in coming weeks.
The price of FSD has steadily climbed even ahead of its availability. Musk announced on Twitter that the price of the company’s Full Self-Driving package will increase by $2,000 on Monday to $10,000. The price hike applies to both new vehicles and upgrades to cars customers already own.
Musk then updated the timeline on Thursday, tweeting that the price change will go into effect October 29. He said the change only applies to the U.S. for now and that a “one week clock will start in other countries as beta is released.”
A subscription service would be an interesting offering for Tesla owners, giving them the flexibility to pay for FSD when it makes sense in relation to their travel habits. FSD may not be necessary for your daily commute, but it might be nice for the summer road trip.
Musk didn’t offer any details about terms or pricing of an FSD subscription, only that it will be offered in 2021.
