I have been talking with Tesla about all of this. It seems like the details are very much still up in the air and this is probably not the final word.
However, as of this moment: If you are a 2008 buyer and you want to upgrade to a Sport model, you are required to upgrade to a 2009 model at the 2009 $109,000 price point and then pay the additional $19,500 upgrade to the Sport from there.
So, for a person like me who is mostly interested in the interior upgrades, a $30,000 price tag just for a new interior is probably out of the question for my budget.
I asked if the new interior would be available as an upgrade without the Sports package, and that is something for which they do not yet have an answer.
This is refreshing to have them be honest and not offer a "what you want to hear" answer. A number of times I had asked new car dealers if some rumored "next year" feature could be retrofitted on a car I was about to buy, and the answer was always "sure, no problem", which turned out never to be true. It is easy for a salesperson to say something is possible without even knowing, when their goal is to get the deal done that day and know that you will find out if it is possible (or not) long after the sale is consummated.
Well, it is a bit different in your case since you are still waiting for your car, and I guess you are hoping for an upgrade before it is actually delivered, but still the principle is the same - it would be easy for them to say yes (and garner short term gratification) even if they aren't sure yet. I guess with their big backlog/pre-order list they don't have to resort to anything odd to keep your business. A bunch of other people would probably jump at the chance to grab your slot # if you didn't like their answer.
Some higher res images became available (and the previous links went stale), so I went and replaced the embedded images. If you go back to the previous posts you can click on the images and see the pics at an even higher resolution (4000 x 2250). At this higher resolution you can see more details. For example, the instrument cluster surround, the top of the dash, and all the gray looking external body panels are intended to be carbon fiber.

Note that the tach is now on the same gauge as the speedometer. The units on the right
"power" gauge is in kilowatts. This is pretty much exactly what some of us were suggesting.

If that's the case, it doesn't really make financial sense. Regardless of when you made or how much you paid for your 2008 reservation, that 2008MY Roadster has a value of at least $125K. That value has been set by Tesla since they are charging $125K for the remaining 2008MY VINs that are later cars than the VIN you already have reserved.

I'd hope all new models would get it and not only Sport.
Max regen power is thus somewhere under 40kW (probably above 30kW).
With regen you really could completely charge the car in under 2 hours

I spoke with Tesla yesterday and the new dash will be on all 2009s, not just the Sport.
No problem about the images, I thought the gauge details would be interesting. :smile:
Yeah, the power meter is using a kind of log scale which I think is great.
Though I always felt this idea was common sense (and should have been done with the tranny change), it certainly looks like it. :smile:This dash finally makes sense. Somebody at Tesla is surely reading this forum

Excellent news. It just makes senses since the improvement is obvious, and I doubt it affects their costs much.
But how about that center console with VDS and shift buttons instead of a lever? Is that for all 2009s too?
And what about the new seats - standard for 2009 or sport model only?

With the email from Elon Musk today, I am still trying to figure out what is standard on the new Sport model.
Here is the line from Elon's email:
The handling components in this package will also be available separately.
Then later in the email there is a "Performance" section. So I am concluding that the 3 items in Performance options are actually standard on the Sport model.
Here is what I think the Sport model actually includes from the option list.
Forged Alloy Tesla Wheels (silver or black finish) $2,300
Performance Tires NEW $850
Custom Tuned Adjustable Suspension NEW $4,000
Total: $7,150
In addition to that the Sport model includes the higher performing engine with the stator improvements.
Does anyone have a different understand of the Sport package?

In case anyone missed it from the other thread, the "Forged Alloy Tesla Wheels" are the normal iconic Tesla wheels that were, until recently, standard. Except now you can also get them in black.
Other options seen in the renderings are the following:
Premium Carbon Fiber and Leather Interior NEW $9,000
Clear Carbon Fiber Hardtop NEW $5,000
Clear Carbon Fiber Accent Group NEW $9,000
So that comes to $30,150 in options not including the better motor. We were told before that the Roadster Sport was an option that only cost $19,500 above the 2009MY base price. So given this price disparity, I doubt everything we see in the renderings is included in the Sport package. I guess we're still waiting for clarification on what exactly it includes. Would be nice to also know the "price as shown" for the renderings Tesla released to represent the Roadster Sport.
