Come to sunny Southern California!

I hope they put it in Santa Clara. Augustine drive is only about 3-4 miles from where I live. The old Applied campus is right across Bowers from the JITB and McDs where I go to get some fast food once in a while. :p

SF Gate Story

Ideal occupants: How about Tesla Motors Inc. moving into the space soon to be vacated by GM at the Nummi plant in Fremont? Think of the convenience, the money saved, not to mention its suitability as a metaphor for America's changing auto industry. And to Bay Area loyalists, it sure beats Southern California, where Tesla is currently planning to build a plant from scratch.

Given its size and structure, Nummi might not be the ideal fit, said Tesla spokeswoman Rachel Konrad, who has "heard from virtually every real estate developer in the state" since Tesla got $465 million in government money, much of which will go toward a manufacturing plant for its all-electric sedan.

She promises to call us if she hears from the folks at Nummi.

Yeah, I had been thinking about that too.

Although GM is leaving, I don't think Toyota plans to stop using the place.
In fact, I read somewhere that Toyota might start building the Prius there.
So, Toyota may already have plans for the space that GM is giving up.

There were on again / off again rumors of a NUMMI Prius swirling around last year.

Toyota may produce Prius in California with GM
Toyota decides Nummi will not build Prius now

Still seemingly undecided recently:
No decision made on whether Fremont's NUMMI will build Toyota Prius - 6/18/09 - San Francisco News - abc7news.com
...
NUMMI management was guarded in a statement it issued on Thursday, saying it will focus on building high quality vehicles and work on lowering its costs while GM and Toyota discuss NUMMI's future direction.
That future may or may not include production of the Toyota Prius, the carmaker's best seller. It appears that decision is still up in the air.
"You hope it still might happen?" said Moneyscope reporter David Louie.
"Of course, who wouldn't?" said assembly line worker Chuck Askew...

Voros: Logic should steer Tesla to NUMMI

Take for instance the fissure that ripped through the Bay Area's manufacturing base Friday when Toyota issued a thinly disguised "Dear John" letter prefacing its departure from the NUMMI auto plant in Fremont and its 4,700 jobs.

...

Tesla could save one of the last bastions of industrial production in the Bay Area, and the company has $450 million in a taxpayer-funded loan to do it.

...

Forming a production partnership with Toyota or even buying the entire factory, which had a recent capitalization value of $331 million, serves the public interest.

A ready-and-waiting auto production site with 5 million square feet would save taxpayer money — as opposed to starting a factory from scratch — and would save thousands of jobs.
