Australia\NZ Electric Vehicle Charging standards (Ban the J1772?)

I actually care about and read up on the charging standards more than most people I know, but wow, it's a mess. I'm confident that I have a bad understanding. Is there any well written summary? I looked for one a while back but I'll take another look. Actually I'm good with kWh and kW. I was...

Australia\NZ Electric Vehicle Charging standards (Ban the J1772?)

Ahh... the NZTA looks to have some information wrong too. DC powered charging ... currently capable of providing charging at a rate of up to 350kW/hour (a Nissan Leaf would be charged to 80 percent full in around 20 minutes) AC powered charging ... tend to provide drivers with a charging rate...

    Unveiling on Oct 17th

Would you rent your car out when you weren't using it, if it activated the autonomous hardware automatically?

    Unveiling on Oct 17th

I don't think that's quite it. :) Shadow mode works behind the scenes to learn how to drive, not demonstrate it could have done better. Already we know the AP1 hardware is always on, and uploads street data to Tesla to crowd source a better map and the AP2 will take that further. You can...

Theoretically it can handle anything. Elon wants people to let their cars go off and be rented by people. It's clearly the goal with this release. I'm worried about intersections though. The side forward cameras can see 60m, so if there's a car driving at 35mph on a regular road that you're...

    Unveiling on Oct 17th

It seems that with this upgrade, all MobileEye involvement is gone. And as we know it hasn't been a friendly breakup. The previous radar software upgrade was internally developed (right?) but still partnered with the MobileEye visual system. The transition must be a real challenge for Tesla. I...

    Unveiling on Oct 17th

Our own (human) visual processing works with very limited data. What our brains do well is take all that data and merge it into a good mental map of how we expect things to be. It works very well :) though it means we sometimes can't see something obvious, even though we think we can see...

    Unveiling on Oct 17th

If it was me, I'd be very pleased that I'll have an even better system... even if it's annoying not to have it right away. That said... I wonder if the new hardware has been supplied to people who DID NOT buy Autopilot for the last month, because they wouldn't know what they were missing and...

    Unveiling on Oct 17th

The suicide rates at FoxConn are half the national Chinese average, so FoxConn is doing relatively well. We just don't comprehend the sheer number of employees they have. I think that seems most likely. It fits the scale of announcement ... significant enough, wasn't expected at this point...

    SolarCity (SCTY)

I still get surprised when I hear about the cost of electricity here in Australia. Consistent 24h rate is US16c/kWh + tax. Or (on a peak/shoulder/off-peak plan) Off peak (10pm-7am) is US8c/kWh + tax [with Peak then at 35c/kWh]. Sorry to be ignorant... and I know some US states have special...

Self-Driving Car: Is it a big deal?

If the autopilot designers, after a crash, say "you should have been paying attention, you know we're only 90% there!", then it's a failure. If the autopilot designers, after a crash, say "our video shows we gave you 30 seconds notice, you shouldn't have been sleeping in the back seat, and...

P85D - Electric Mechanical Braking System

But you don't have ALL the regen on the unpressed accelerator now, do you? I mean when taking your foot off, does the motor decelerate you as fast as it possibly can? And with dual motors will it decelerate you as fast as it possibly can? That would seem potentially dangerous. Some people...

So with Elon Repeatedly saying how adding a second motor improves efficiency...

(Edit: oops, I see what you were saying now.) The single motor 60 & 85 have a 380hp motor, the p85 has a 470hp motor. The dual motor 60 & 85 have 2x 188hp (376hp total) while the p85 has a 221hp front and 470hp rear (691hp total). It will be interesting to see real world effect on range...

Self-Driving Car: Is it a big deal?

Terminology aside, I think that a highly capable self driving car that still cleanly hands over to the driver from time to time is totally acceptable. What's not acceptable is thinking it can handle itself and putting lives at risk.

P85D - Electric Mechanical Braking System

I wonder if they improve the integration of regen braking with regular braking too. By that I mean pressing the brake pedal should increase regen gradually to its maximum without actually activating a brake, until a certain point. But it would have to be entirely seamless and smooth. (Edit...
