Ask Me Anything -- Motor Trend's Jonny Lieberman Defends Picking the Benz

Depends on how the car is designed. If you're talking about a 1959 Cadillac, the engine makes the car more dangerous because no one thought about crash safety back then, at least not in terms of engineering. The story is completely different with modern cars. Engines can be part of the crash...

You're attacking the messenger, which is fine. But you can't say the Model S is better because it's more efficient and then turn around and play down the better efficiency of the Leaf when I point it out because it doesn't have a Tesla badge. So, I short handed my comments because if you can't...

Just so everyone's clear, a whole bunch of stuff is being conflated. When we started reviewing the cars for this particular comparison, not only do we have a two 220 volt chargers at the office, but we're three miles from a supercharger station. The not having a 220-volt charger at my house, oh...

You've lost all credibility with me x2.

Now there's a GREAT question. Boy, that's very difficult to answer. Car of the Year -- unlike the video in question -- is NOT a comparison test. We use a whole bunch of criteria to determine the winner, and please always keep in mind the OF THE YEAR part. Many people discount it and say, "You...

Oh yeah, the Benz will depreciate like a rock.

Actually, since we did the test, it's the battery pack. 2013 Tesla Model S P85+ Long-Term Update 4 - Motor Trend

Rethink my position? I've been one of the Model S's literal biggest advocates. Again, my Tesla credentials are that I voted it MT's 2013 Car of the Year, the first (and I'll argue most important) award the car won. Every single thing that's been said, I've said, both personally and...

You're not even reading what I'm writing. The M5 is a pretty blah car and I'd MUCH rather have/drive a Tesla than it. The Tesla would SMOKE the M5 in the comparison.

Junk? That's a ridiculous comment, and one that's dripping with "pure bias." Let's say I live in Germany and would like to go 155 mph, a speed at which the "pure junk" S-Class is totally cool at but that the Model S can't go. I know this because years ago I took a Model S up to 132 mph for three...

I totally compared them. Hence, comparable. - - - Updated - - - The Model S would smoke the M5. That would be boring to make.

The Leaf is more efficient. TRUTH! as the kids would say. And I'm hardly a troll. I am here to defend my opinion that after spending two weeks with both cars, given $125K to buy one of them with, I'd choose the Mercedes because I like it better.

Even if I had a Supercharger in my bed and only had to drive 5 feet, those five feet would let me know that the S550 is the better car.

I drove about 300 miles yesterday. I'll be driving 350 miles on Sunday and 300 miles on Monday. But I'm weird.
