    X vs. Ice

I disagree. Not in the other cars I own: BMW, Toyota, and Audi. On "auto" on those cars when the HVAC is heating, it automatically opens vents to the windshield and the floor. When cooling it opens the console vents. The Tesla doesn't matter if heating or cooling; if you use "auto" it only...

    X vs. Ice

Tesla heater controls are confusing. You don't have to turn the DEFROST RED icon to have the windshield heated. Just set the temperature and then make sure the icon that shows air going to the TOP is on (blue). That is the three people icons, the left-most one. In auto mode with the heat on the...

Sudden drop in range 2016 90D

I have had a strange drop in range on my late 2016 90D Model S. I purchased this car used from a third party in January 2019. Had been daily driving it plus many long trips since purchasing. On my long trips I would usually charge to about 90 to 98% prior to leaving and could easily make 200+...

LA and SF frequent traveler (does autopilot helps tremendously)

I do 400-mile round trip every weekend and Autopilot was a game changer; it was the main reason I bought a Tesla. Fatigue cut back by a ton which also makes driving safer. In my previous vehicle, I sometimes would stop halfway for a 10 minute nap, but don't do that any more in the Tesla. My...

Poll: "Systems are powering up" error message

I have a 2016 Model S VIN 156XXX with Version 2018.50.6 I was getting this message every few times I got in the car about 2 weeks ago but only for for a few days. Only once did it last more than a couple of seconds. Haven't had that message in about 2 weeks. My last update was more than 2 weeks...

Tesla Model S 90D winter driving review

Welcome to Tesla ownership! You'll be glad you made the switch. With only 2 months ownership I have learned not to worry about the range. Watch the percentage and charge accordingly. Just like any other car you will learn the idiosyncrasies and adjust. It's really remarkable this vehicle was...

Tesla Model S 90D winter driving review

Great to hear from you Pwder Extreme. So few Tesla owners in Montana. I probably would have gone with the Nokian tires but I bought this thing in mid-winter and wanted to get wheels and tires all mounted and balanced in short notice and Tirerack is the best in that regard. Tirerack doesn't sell...

Don't leave unless it shows 6% or more arrival

It will adjust the recommended slower speed as you drive. It will tell you "DO NOT DRIVE ABOVE xxx MPH TO MAKE IT TO THE DESTINATION". The message will change as you drive, sometimes 75MPH then 70MPH then back up to 75MPH then it goes away. It's actually intelligent in that regard.

Don't leave unless it shows 6% or more arrival

My guess is it uses the posted speed limit for the faster driving speed. This is my guess based on traveling the same 200-mile route twice a week and seeing how the prediction system works.

Don't leave unless it shows 6% or more arrival

With unpredictable temperatures (in winter I am doing long range driving at anywhere from -25F to 40F) and the SOC prediction is often way off. It will sometimes tell me to drive speeds much lower than the posted speed limit (65mph on highway that is 80mph limit) which is not really that...

Tesla Model S 90D winter driving review

From the best I can tell, having the defrost blue turns off "recycle" and directs air at the windshield to "defog" it and this actually works quite well. But for ice on the window, the defrost "red" is necessary. Couple of other things I wanted to add about my experience. I am not real happy...

Tesla Model S 90D winter driving review

I apologize for the long writeup but I though it may be informative to some people contemplating purchasing a Tesla for winter use. Apart from the many Bjorn videos on YouTube I have not found an in-depth review on Tesla Model S for winter use. I live in Montana and we typically drive a lot as...

For those that own a Model S Ludicrous without breaking the bank, what is you total comp or job?

I'll start just by saying my income is a lot more than yours and I live in a place with relatively low living expenses compared to the coasts. I wouldn't make a purchase like this until I had 1-year of expenses saved up, was putting away more than 20% of my income into retirement accounts, and...

    Winter Driver: Extremely hazardous

Sounds like a frustrating trip. I have been in similar situations but not with the Tesla. For the next time put the defroster on red as soon as there is any buildup of snow and keep it there. Do not use the wipers too fast as they will often just spread a thin film of easily freezeable water...
