Have had the exact same problem with TuneIn for weeks now. All other data connectivity is fine.

Before my XS came, I had a 7 Plus and I just had to walk up to the car. So I dunno. You might be right. All I know is that the behavior changed with the new phone.

I have exactly the same issue. It doesn't unlock the car unless I wake the phone up / peek first.

This was a large part of my motivation too

I regretted enough that I'm risking having my delivery pushed back by requesting an order change to add it. In typical Tesla fashion, its been 4 days and not even a acknowledgement of my change request.

I'm waiting on a P3D-, pickup Oakville. Ordered Jul 1. No Edit button. No VIN though.
