Does anyone know what Tesla did to solve low performance with SOC and Higher speeds?

Maybe? It looks like they reduced the gearing ratio and then massively increased the current to the motors to maintain the same or slightly lower torque to the wheels. They might be up against the current limit of the motors or controllers. Once the HP curve flattens out, that is up against the...

Does anyone know what Tesla did to solve low performance with SOC and Higher speeds?

That's a good video, but I also can't figure out why the 2019 Raven Performance torque is higher than plaid? It seems like maybe they didn't publish the right gear ratios for the plaid motors?

    Wiki Model S Delivery Update

Cool. Seems safe to select lease and lock in the lease pricing. Seems likely that you could always switch to cash and have no trouble with pricing changes. Just show up with a check made out for the right amount and you're done.

That assumes you can reach them.... :-) Can you change it to Tesla lease, though? Third party finance is the same as cash to Tesla, not sure about lease.

You can change it after the fact?

Does anyone know what Tesla did to solve low performance with SOC and Higher speeds?

I've been wondering a related question. How did they flatten out the power curve out to 200 mph? It's insane. I imagine they increased the gear reduction a bit to allow the motors to spin faster, but the power should start dropping off as the motor back EMF approaches the battery voltage. How...

Does anyone know if your order doesn't start getting worked on until you finalize the payment in your account? I'm still pondering lease vs buy... I've finished all the other steps.

19" tires on Plaid and LR

Whoa, are the 19s faster? I just ordered a Plaid with the 21s. Maybe I should save $4500? https://www.autoevolution.com/news/tesla-model-s-plaid-drag-races-another-plaid-wheel-size-makes-the-difference-169642.html

Vendor Official Signature Wheel Gallery | Model S Plaid & Performance.

I'm not up to speed on this thread. Are any of the aftermarket wheel and tire packages for the plaid less than $4500? Deciding between the 19s and 21s when ordering plaid. I know I can sell the 19s for something... not sure how much.

    Roadster 2023

Definitely sounds like it's time for a plaid for the next few years....

    21” arachnid or 19” base

What do you think about cornering and handling on the 19s vs the 21s? I mean, hard to say without having tried the 21s as well, but...

    21” arachnid or 19” base

I'm guessing you are on the right? And that's with the stock 19 wheels and tires? Seems to match up with these numbers on drag radials...
  15. N

    21” arachnid or 19” base

Those are pretty nice looking. Has anyone confirmed what they weigh compared to the 21s? I'd imagine they are a little lighter, improving performance a bit. But, the tires aren't as wide as on the 21s, reducing grip slightly... The rims are just as wide, so perhaps you could go slightly wider on...

Is it safe to connect a large inverter to the 12V battery?

You could bypass that fuse and tap your inverter to the unfused +12V terminal and add your own 100A fuse. Then the car can charge the 12V as needed and you can pull whatever you need from the battery. Reminder, this only works on the Model S/X. Not the Model 3/Y. Those have to go to the DC/DC.
  17. N

Is it safe to connect a large inverter to the 12V battery?

Probably a dedicated charging controller for the 12V battery. I think it's actually lithium ion, based on these photos: https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-12v-lithium-ion-battery-replacement-update-elon-musk/ 3.6v per cell, 4s battery, 6.9 Ah. Strange cells, though. maybe pouch cells...

19" tires on Plaid and LR

I used to use them when I lived in northern NJ. They were very good in the snow. Now in NC, it only snows once a year or so, it isn't worth it.
  19. N

Is it safe to connect a large inverter to the 12V battery?

And they also monitor the current going to the battery? I'm guessing there's a solid state switch in there between the 12V DC/DC bus and the battery to allow them to measure charge current.
  20. N

19" tires on Plaid and LR

I know the manufacturers say not to use summer tires in freezing temps, but I have been doing it for 6+ years now here in Durham. The tires seem to grip fine. Maybe our roads heat up enough most days? I also stay home whenever there is snow.
  21. N

19" tires on Plaid and LR

Exactly the opposite. I want summer tires only. How else would we put 1020 HP to the ground? :-)
  22. N

Is it safe to connect a large inverter to the 12V battery?

Yup. Seems like they separated out the high current 12V stuff and run those things direct from the DC/DC. The 12V battery is only used to keep essential things running when the car is off, such as computers for sentry mode. The 12V battery seems to be isolated from the rest of the 12V system or...
  23. N

    21” arachnid or 19” base

Also, do the 19s on the plaid really come with all season tires? That sounds pretty terrible. I wonder if they turn down the torque just to maintain traction?
  24. N

    21” arachnid or 19” base

That makes sense. Although, I am concerned that the Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires aren't really street tires, given you have to watch out for standing water. I'd feel a bit wasteful running them on the street, considering I'm only likely to make it to the track at best once a year. It would seem to...
  25. N

    21” arachnid or 19” base

If I only need summer tires and only care about performance, get the 21s? Or get the 19s and wait for the 20" track package wheels? Presumably, they are going to be more than $4500, although I might recoup some cost selling the 19s. I haven't had any problems with potholes (knock on wood) with...

Is it safe to connect a large inverter to the 12V battery?

Sounds great! Just a reminder to everyone, this doesn't seem to work on the Model 3 and Y, since they limit the 12V battery charge current to 6 amps. On the 3/Y, you can tap into the DC/DC terminal directly. And we don't know yet about the newest Model S / X vehicles, since they have a totally...

    Why Lease a car?

No, they effectively aren't anymore, because of the SALT cap at $10k.
  28. N

    Why Lease a car?

No. If you rent, you get to keep your capital and invest it somewhere else, rather than paying 20% down payment, real estate fees, title transfer taxes, etc. If you take your down payment and put it in the market in index funds, you could make just as much money while renting and not be...

    Why Lease a car?

I'm struggling with this decision too. I have a Model 3 Performance now, and I want to get a Model S Plaid. I leased a P90DL back in 2016 when they had those ridiculous lease deals on inventory cars. I paid $700 / month with no downpayment for a 24 month lease. :-) Leasing was fine, although...

    Roadster 2023

Agreed. Though, I might wait it out with a plaid model S... But, if it is really coming in 6 months, then buying the plaid will be silly.

    Roadster 2023

Same... It's been almost four years since it was announced.
  32. N

    Roadster 2023

I think the P100D values held pretty well, since there wasn't anything new introduced that was much different. The P90D dropped like a rock. 50% depreciation in 2-3 years.
  33. N

How and when does the 12v battery get charged?

I think it was mentioned earlier that it may not be a good idea to use the 12V battery in the model 3 or Y because it is only provided with about 6A of charging current and the computers will throw an error if you draw too much load from it. Going direct to the DC/DC converter is best for big...
  34. N

    Roadster 2023

So... what's our bets on the Roadster arriving in 2022 vs 2023? If it's 2023, I think I'll get the Plaid for now for fun. But, if it really is 2022, I'll probably feel bad selling the Plaid after only one year and taking a huge hit on depreciation.

    A yoke or a joke?

I agree the yoke is stupid, but I'm still going to buy the car, because 1020 HP. 😂
  36. N

    A yoke or a joke?

I like the Model 3 wheel better, having had both. The model S wheel seems too large. Though, I appreciated the three stalks on the S wheel over the two on the 3 wheel. But, I got used to the AP controls on the wheel in the 3 over time.

    Replacing the 12V aux Battery

Nice. Although, I think on the model 3 this might be as much of a big deal as it was on the Model S. The AGM battery is warrantied for 4 years and Tesla seems to have improved their charging / discharging to the point where the batteries aren't wearing out all that fast. The AGM battery on the...
  38. N

    Replacing the 12V aux Battery

Lifepo doesn't need to charge above 14 volts. There's very little additional capacity above 14 volts, so for cell life it is better to not charge that high. 13.8V would be fine. As long as you can get the BMS to balance the cells, 13.8 is a fine full charge voltage.
  39. N

    Replacing the 12V aux Battery

Sounds pretty good. Have you found a Shorai that's a good replacement for the Model 3 battery? The only thing I haven't seen answered is how any of the 12V lifepo batteries handle cold weather charging. Do any of them have built in heating elements to warm the battery before allowing charging...

Don't go there? 😂 Some fill in with electrify America chargers? Yeah, I don't leave the coasts.

What would be the resale value of the new Roadster within 6 months of its release?

I'm estimating ~50% depreciation in 5 years, based on when I bought my 2010 Roadster in 2015. So, about $20k / yr in depreciation, plus taxes, insurance, etc. I'm thinking it will cost me about $25k / yr, if I hold for 5 years. Is that about what you all are estimating?
  43. N

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

Huh? Have you ever driven a road trip in a Tesla? Superchargers are much more frequent now than 100+ miles apart. They are <30 miles apart in NC now. https://supercharge.info/map I guess an ICE car with autopilot would probably be better for long road trips. I find the AP more important for...
  44. N

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

It's more like 15 minutes in my Model 3. Up to 200 miles in 15 minutes. I used to spend much longer charging in my Model S P90D, but that was because the supercharging was throttled and the car was much less efficient. I don't know. I don't want to eat while driving, especially after already...
  45. N

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

Yeah, but after 5-8 hours of driving, you need to stop, use the bathroom, and eat... Every trip I've been on, the car was ready to go before I was.
  46. N

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

Probably just too far out? They don't want to deal with customers complaining about cars they aren't delivering for two years? Also, it probably limits sales. I wasn't going to buy the Plaid when I knew Plaid Plus was right around the corner. Same thing with Lucid. Their car looks great, but I...

Anyone able to transfer their plaid reservation to me at yesterday's price?

    Buying Roadster Referral

Interesting idea. I would also be interested in buying someone's referral Roadster!
  50. N

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

You might not be the target market for the Plaid. :-) A regular model S will have more range than plaid. But, not much more range than the Model S around the same time you bought your X100D. It seems likely the battery is still 100 kwhr. It needs a bigger battery to have more range. I...
