Wiki Super Heavy/Starship - General Development Discussion

Yes that's what I was getting at - hot staging improves overall performance even considering carrying the extra mass of the hot staging ring. I can't seem to find where I read that. If that increase in performance still holds on the longer boost, I expect they would not remove the hot staging...

Isn't hot-staging about avoiding starship coasting, rather than anything to do with the booster flip?

Tesla model S Driver side complete failure?

The same exact thing happened to my 2013 S85 about 2 weeks ago. It was the "left door controls" fuse. In my case, it seems the controller embedded in the driver's door handle failed. Luckily, after replacing the fuse everything worked except that door handle. While I contemplated how to repair...

Wiki Super Heavy/Starship - General Development Discussion

Let me see if I have this right: the header tanks are there so they are full when they need to relight, so they don't have to settle prop before relighting; is that correct? I wonder if this baffle/valve works well enough, maybe they can delete the header tanks. The best part design is the one...

    2013 S 85 multiple codes and won’t drive

12v battery is probably not your original problem; though it now has been deep cycled which is a stress on it. If the HV contacts won't close to power the car (as is your case with those errors), the 12v battery will completely drain in a matter of hours. That is why you need to keep jumping the...

Model S refresh lifted without jackpads at local shop - battery damaged on edges OK?

Not an expert here, but I'd consider that kind of damage superficial. That shop should be more careful with customer cars though.

204 miles charged and then stops. After charging is complete, battery reads total miles, but during charging, system stops going further than 204, als

I think OP is trying to say the range displayed stops increasing but charging continues. Sounds like a software glitch. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it if it continues charging.

    Charging/Using a US Model S in Europe

I've seen 208V in public chargers many times. (It's a common US 3-phase voltage.) I also have seen 245 in a residential installation; got lucky with the closest transformer I guess. The UMC will take any voltage between about 100V and 250V. The car however will reduce current draw if the voltage...

    Autopilot and Supercharging on a 2013 Model S 60

Late to this thread, but it sounds to me like in Tesla's system your car is marked as a 40kwh software limited car. If I recall, unlocking the 40 to 60 was $10k. (Maybe $12k?) Supercharging was not allowed on 40's, so a 40 would have to be unlocked then purchase the supercharging option. $12,500...

    32amp Vs 48amp?

That's because it says Charging Complete. Check it while it's charging. You could just bump it up to 80% in the app and watch it for a minute or two, then you put it back to 70% after you read your charge rate. (edit) And yes, the wall connector on a 50A circuit will allow charging at 40A which...
  12. Brass Guy

    32amp Vs 48amp?

To check your charging rate, just open the app while it's charging; it should say something like 27 mi/hr on the home screen. Check the circuit breaker for that outlet. It could be a 40A or 50A breaker. This is because there isn't a 40A receptacle; so it is allowed to have a 50A outlet on a 40A...

    New tesla owner

I'm still driving my 2013 and have no plans to let it go. My biggest concern for a 2013 with only 4k miles would be the rear drive unit, as already mentioned. Mine was replaced a few times under warranty, but not since the last - well definitely over 100k miles anyway so I must have a high...

How to know if its a new replaced battery?

Unlocking it can be done, it'd be at least $10k but I'm not sure Tesla will do it as a policy. You got lucky. My battery was replaced (under warranty) around the same time and I got a 400V 85, the same as my original. It takes almost twice as long to supercharge as yours will. I really wish I...

How to know if its a new replaced battery?

Most likely they software limited the battery so you cannot charge it all the way. On the flip side, you wouldn't have to worry about degradation due to charging to 100% as often as you want since it would actually be something like 80%. What is your range at a given state of charge?

    Low mileage 2015 S85D

I don't think there's anything wrong with the car sitting undriven as long as the SOC is not allowed to fall below 10%. It shouldn't be left below that. I still love my 2013, and I've decided to replace the battery if/when I need to; rather than replace the car. Know the risk of the high price...

    Premium Connectivity

Same here. I don't do much with electronics though. I did replace the IC myself when it bubbled, but I didn't know they replace it when they do the MCU upgrade or I would've put the crappy one back in. Each time I repair a door handle I add the light - the wiring is already there. The infamous...

Maybe I remember something wrong about text messages. I'm fairly certain there was no talk-to-text before I got the MCU upgrade. Premium Connectivity

Originally all cars had something like 3 years of data included in the purchase, but it was several more years before Tesla figured out how they were going to charge for data. When they finally decided, our old cars were given free data for life. So it's not really an optional license. It sounds...

    Premium Connectivity

I purchased my 2013 without what was offered as the "tech package" which included navigation. Eventually all the stuff in the tech package became standard, not all at once, and I don't know when. If there's anything else from this list missing, the car probably doesn't have navigation at all...

Insane repair estimate for 2015 MS

OP is not having a drive unit replaced, or any high voltage system component. A clunk is probably one or two suspension components, and Tesla wants to practically rebuild the entire suspension, as well as replace recently replaced brakes. Recent components I've replaced were a tie rod end in...
  25. Brass Guy

Insane repair estimate for 2015 MS

That estimate is ridiculous. Besides replacing almost everything, $63 to remove and replace wheels? Like that's not included in the suspension or brake labor? Take it to an independent shop; anybody can do suspension or brake work. And you probably don't need brake work.

2012 Model S P85 - Door handles stuck and motors keep running

You can also get the Tesla part from a service center, it's called a Paddle Gear. It was $1.22 when I needed one in 2018, and they had them in stock. I bought 2 to keep one on hand.

    2023.12.9 rant

If I select any location using the car's screen (using voice or text search, recent destination, clicking on a supercharger to get availability, even selecting a location from the calendar app) then using the re-center icon restarts the auto-zoom-center. 2013 Model S P85 Won't Charge

    2023.12.9 rant

So far my theory holds. I scrolled/zoomed, no auto-center. Then I selected a recent destination on screen (which was the address from Tuesday). Afterwards, auto-center was re-engaged. Next I need to set a location using the phone calendar and verify if auto-center goes away again. I should...

Tesla suspension repairs outside of dealer

I did not look for aftermarket parts for suspension. I did use 3rd party brake rotors/pads when I replaced the front brakes. (Everything wore unevenly since the pads froze to the calipers. I needed to use the brakes more.) Tesla's rotors are outrageous.

I have noticed that sometimes the screen does not automatically re-center after a manual scroll/zoom. I haven't figured out when or why for certain but I have a theory to test. If I have set a location in my phone app calendar, when it pops up on the screen I select the icon and it will...

    2023.12.9 rant

I always upgrade now. I postponed the 2019 not-so-supercharging update for a couple of years, then had to pay Tesla to catch up the software before they would replace the HV battery under warranty. I'm not holding my breath, but would be pleasantly surprised if they remove this downgrade feature.

    2023.12.9 rant

I use double tap to zoom in. But no zoom out. I used to double- or triple-tap the - button which was great; zoom out a bunch immediately without rotating. I've tried the voice command, but it is way too slow; especially if I need to zoom out more than once right away. So I zoom out then when I...

    2023.12.9 rant

I've been bothered for quite a while how each software "update" seems to make the interface worse. Starting way back when they removed map colors. BMW folks comments on Tesla

I haven't driven a recent Model S, but I never considered my car to be a "luxury" vehicle. Back then it was marketed as a premium sedan, which I interpreted as meaning more expensive. As a (relatively) early adopter, luxury was not remotely the point of my purchase. I didn't even bother with the...

2013 S85 Battery Replacement (Out of warranty) - my experience

I'm fairly certain that by regulation (here in MA anyway) the core fee must appear on the invoice, or you get to keep whatever you're replacing if you want it.

Has anyone taken delivery of a new Model S and opted for the steering wheel?

I know a little something about practicing, however I feel that something as critical as the safety device in question should not require practice in different situations. Know where the control is, it should not move and be easy to operate. You should be able to activate it at any time, without...

    Home Charging

    Home Charging

Eh, matter of opinion. I've been using the miles setting for many years and am used to it and usually close to match it. Set to miles, I know how fast my battery is losing range, or if a "battery-gate" hits my car. But on topic, I usually set mine to charge at 34A at home, though 40A capable...

Left front wheel rubs on turns and braking

Yes, some of the repairs were done due to clunking type noises. Once I figured out and replaced the worn part, the clunk went away. I don't recall ever having any ride or handling issues. Left front wheel rubs on turns and braking

I have over 200k miles on my 2013. I have replaced front upper control arms (due to worn ball joints) on both sides, a forward link, a sway bar link, both front wheel bearings...
