Supercharger - Elverson, PA - Peter J. Camiel Service Plaza

Are you familiar with demand charges? At my work, we pay $9 per kW peak demand, measured monthly, on top of the price per kWh. If a Supercharger’s peak demand is 1 MW, even for a brief period of time once during the month, that would add $9,000 to the power bill regardless of how many kWh were...

Tesla switching SR models to LFP batteries

Yes but it requires considerable energy to do so. 3+ kWh to bring it to 20°C from 0°C. It can be worth it but one must plan accordingly.

For the 1000 Superchargers in one car, I think changing the dates on revisits or somehow officially tracking which sites were visited in which car quickly becomes unmanageable. I’m fine with a simple honor system for people who say they’ve done it and each subsequent millennium achievement (if a...

Natural Gas vs Heat pumps for heating

We are using Philips Hue motion sensors and a Lutron smart switch to control the record pump. I’m controlling it all in Apple HomeKit and it’s working great.

No wheels allowed. Not in my opinion. It makes it more difficult to track - for example, the ones I visited in a rental but then later charged at in my own car. It could also be seen as devaluing a competitor’s travels and accomplishments - I don’t care if someone flies to Alaska, takes the...

Supercharger - Florence, KY - Houston Road

30+ minutes are required to get peak speeds. Not worth it if you’re a local because it takes quite a bit of energy to get the 1,000 pound pack up to 40°C.

    Setec CCS to Tesla Adapter

The pin definitely locks the charge cable to the adapter when the adapter is inserted into the car, protecting a user from arc flash in the event that they attempt to unplug the charge cord while the vehicle is still charging. The SETEC adapter has no such locking provision, resulting in a very...

I log my new charging stops in the notes app on my cell phone - the modern spiral notebook. Back in my pre-EV days, I would log fuel consumption on all of my vehicles, but for some reason I have zero interest in tracking energy consumption on the EVs.

Go Fund Me for EV Charging in SE NM

Yeah, 30A sucks. If you can do a mix of Gen 3 WC ($635) and Series 4 SemaConnect ($699), you should meet the goal of 48A charging while brand agnostic.

I recommend considering Gen 3 wall connectors. Built-in billing is coming soon, which will ease the financial pressure on existing and prospective site hosts. SemaConnect's new J-1772 station for homes and businesses is hitting the market soon, too. I've submitted a feature request for...

Natural Gas vs Heat pumps for heating

Using an occupancy sensor is just fine. The pump running for 3 minutes vs 10 minutes isn't that big of a deal. You aren't talking about significant additional heat losses due to the pump running for a few minutes longer. We've been using occupancy sensors for over a year and the savings are...

    Supercharger - Edgewater, MD

Are you a local? Is your battery warm? We've had some pretty cold overnight temps, so unless you're navigating to the Supercharger for at least 30 minutes, don't expect anywhere close to 250 kW.

I'll be shocked if any battery trailer Superchargers stick around for more than a year. Seems like a lot of additional work to track these things, especially if Tesla expands this program. My vote is to stick with the status quo of counting temporary locations, but not portable locations.

How much energy does a model 3 use on average every month?

280 kWh vs 300 kWh vs 330 kWh is kind of moot when the OP is trying to justify keeping two solar panels, which will generate less than a half that in a month’s time. The bottom line is that the Model 3 will add more consumption than those two panels will ever produce, so it should be no...

How much energy does a model 3 use on average every month?

280 kWh per month is about right. You’ll probably use more in the winter and less in the summer. You’ll definitely want those two extra solar panels.

Can the American power grid sustain EV adoption?

That's an intriguing idea and would allow you to leverage solar production during the day rather than the grid mix at night. 300 kW of solar requires about a half acre of land (~2000 square meters). You'd likely need some sort of hybrid setup, with a tethered/catenary connection to the...

Can the American power grid sustain EV adoption?

Getting battery packs large enough to support farm work is going to be a challenge. Back of napkin math: Combines can range from 12 - 22 gallons per hour depending on size and crop moisture. 1 gallon of diesel fuel is the equivalent of about 40 kWh of electricity, although the diesel engine...

    Tesla MY Parking Cameras

FSD will probably back into parking spaces since, as I mentioned a few posts ago, camera coverage of the ground is excellent in that direction. The front camera coverage is sufficient for pulling out of parking spaces. Maneuverability is also better in a back-in, pull-out parking arrangement.
