    Tesla Model Y in Australia

You don’t know how to use google? OK… https://www.motor1.com/news/727166/tesla-losing-ground-in-us-europe/ “This means Tesla's market share in the European BEV market fell from 19.8 percent to 17.2 percent this year” “The situation in the United States is similar… Tesla's share dropped from...

Great Aussie EV Road trips - Live to drive - Drive to Live

I’m heading off on a 2-week road trip to western NSW tomorrow. Unfortunately not enough time to try to be the first BEV to go to Camerons Corner, but we’re still going to some pretty remote spots. Is visiting the Mad Max Museum at Silverton in a Tesla advisable? 😄 I’m planning to post a...

    Tesla Model Y in Australia

Imagine if Tesla released a completely new form factor, like a low-cost compact hatch. That would be novel. This 2-trick pony caper is getting a bit boring and not helping Tesla’s sliding market share.

Not only that, you can drive without the screen on, or while the MCU is rebooting. It happened to me once just after leaving my house at night… the screen went black, all by itself. The car still worked completely normally except of course you had no speedo, no radio, and while the blinkers...

The longest EV charging network in West Australia

Well, yes, but box trailers have zero aerodynamics, and will really mess up the trailing flows around a Model 3 or Y. The penalty would be less towing something larger, but more aerodynamic.

    Tesla Software updates - Australia

Perhaps you are too impatient when you hear there is a new version? iOS App updates are rolled out among the device fleet in a staged fashion to manage server load. So when a new Tesla App is released, for example, it won’t go out to everyone who has it all at the same time. Some will get it...

    Powerwall 3 Roadmap - 3 Phase Coming!

What I do know is that 3 years ago, Ausgrid spent a day in our street rebalancing the phases and giving everyone brand new service lines. How they detected that this was needed, and how they decided which house goes on which phase, no idea. Power was out the whole day (but not for me with my...

    HPWC fault

Not that I’m aware of. Nothing else in my house has exhibited any symptoms of interrupted or degraded supply.
  15. Vostok

    HPWC fault

No idea. It is a v2 HPWC which does not have network connectivity. Firmware is updated only as required via the charge cable when plugged into the car, and I don’t think there is any menu in the car’s console which tells you what firmware version it is on.

And this is the sanitised Tesla map, because the USA and Canada actually have 3 standards - CCS1, CHAdeMo and now NACS. What a mess.

    HPWC fault

There didn’t seem to be an existing thread suited to posting this small tidbit. My Tesla failed to charge last night and the night before from the HPWC. After the first night I thought “that’s odd… did I forget to schedule charging… 🤔” but then promptly forgot about it. After it didn’t charge...

    Tesla Software updates - Australia

Odd that the wrong APN was in there. Usually when setting up a service for the first time the network will send the phone a carrier settings SMS (which is invisible to the user) containing the required settings which the phone then implements, APN being one of them. If a carrier setting ever...

    Powerwall 3 Roadmap - 3 Phase Coming!

Yes the phases are supposed to be reasonably balanced but I don’t know if there are any hard rules in AS3000 as to how “balanced” they must be. It’s pretty random as to how someone might use a particular power point. And the 3-phase loads tend to dominate consumption anyway, so the rest...

    Superchargers in Australia

Great stuff! “Westerners” are often dismissive of other countries that aren’t English speaking or “developed”, but a lot of very good things happen in these countries to get off fossil fuels precisely because they aren’t rich, and oil products are extremely expensive when they have to be...

Great Aussie EV Road trips - Live to drive - Drive to Live

Nice. 133 Wh/km is very impressive. My lifetime efficiency (noting my car is dual motor) is 152 Wh/km. Are those stats from TeslaFi? I really don’t like how it uses the term “efficiency” to describe the ratio between actual km driven and rated battery range used. That is not “efficiency” -...

    Powerwall 3 Roadmap - 3 Phase Coming!

Very interesting, but for me not backing up all 3 phases in an outage is not a big issue. First, the only 3-phase loads in my house are ducted air conditioning and Tesla HPWC. Those are the 2 loads that I absolutely do not want to operate in a grid outage. In an outage, most folk would want...

Australian Model 3 Highland experiences, tips, tricks

I assume this is on a motorway. It has always been this way, ever since I got my car, and it hasn’t gotten any less skittish. The trigger is a car crossing the road in front of you. It’s that simple and that infuriating. Counterintuitively, the way to pre-empt it is to either turn TACC off...

Australian Model 3 Highland experiences, tips, tricks

I’ve heard that reasoning before, but it’s a bad analogy. First, your phone uses power even if you aren’t using it (running background tasks etc which uses WiFi or the cellular network) while your Tesla (mostly) doesn’t use power when it is parked unless you deliberately activate various...

    AGL’s “Night Saver Energy Plan”

Semantics. A “distributor haircut” looks a lot like a negative FIT, feels like a negative FIT, and acts like a negative FIT… so yeah, it’s a negative FIT that is likely to be passed on by retailers. Maybe not in year 1 when the negative FIT is small and relatively constrained, but as it gets...

    AGL’s “Night Saver Energy Plan”

Well that is interesting given the Ausgrid tariff plan for 2024-25 says EA010 Residential Single Rate Tariff is closed. Can’t get much clearer than that. It doesn’t, however, stop retailers offering a single rate plan on a ToU tariff. A retailer is free to charge the same price per kWh at...

This seemed to be the best thread to post this in. For the first time in 5 years, my PW2 entered “storm watch” mode at about 10:30am yesterday due to the high winds in the Sydney area. The banner on the App indicated that the PW2 would charge to 100% as insurance (although it was already at...

    AGL’s “Night Saver Energy Plan”

House battery ROIs are not great, but they eventually pay for themselves, it’s just a question of how long it takes. Even a 10 year payback time on a battery represents a tax-free investment returning 7.2% p.a. which is not that easy to beat. And of course, any battery failures within that...

    AGL’s “Night Saver Energy Plan”

When did you get solar? In 2019, when I got solar, it triggered smart meter installation, but back then moving to ToU tariff was still opt-in (but once opted-in, you could never go back to single rate). My understanding is the Ausgrid rules have changed since then, and smart meter install for...

    Powerwall 3 Roadmap - 3 Phase Coming!

That’s typical of most solar installations - panel nameplate can be up to 20% larger than the inverter capacity simply because orientation, azimuth, pitch and overshadowing all conspire to make peak solar production less than nameplate. My installation is unusual in that my 5.8 kW setup...
