Do I need to charge my Tesla every night?

first rule in my home: Plug it in the second you get out of it. How I charge it, when and etc is then up to whatever I schedule, automate, or change from my phone. None of which can be accomplished if the darn thing isn’t plugged in. Or do I fear an “oh *sugar*, the battery is too low” It...

    Next Gen Performance batteries?

On a “P”? Don’t hold your breath. I’ve not looked deeply for a year or so now, but thelast I knew the frontiers were: 1). Environmental impact 2). Cost 3). Cycle life. I do not recall any r&d going into exceeding the present day lion power density or discharge rate. Nor do I expect a...

Mainly Hwy driving on battery health

Earl, I wonder if you perhaps didn’t follow what “C” is given your comment. Fine fine, but perhaps the next guy won’t either, so: C” has its own definition in battery charging and discharging. It’s essentially the “rate” factor, and when discussing charge discharge rates generically we don’t...

Engineering Explained: How To Ruin Your Electric Car's Battery - LFP Edition!

Nice work as alway aakee. Interesting how c/2 shows such a significant ECF increase. That’s a LONG life cycle. Should be very interesting in duck curve solutions.

Engineering Explained: How To Ruin Your Electric Car's Battery - LFP Edition!

I disagree. Knowing now how to leverage batteries to last does not require inconvenience, micromanagement, or overly complex learning. It does mean the life expectancy of the car should be longer. Perhaps not for the first owner, but only the selfish and short-sighted ignore the next owner...

Do Model Y windshield and windows have UV protection?

I would do the windshield with something that won’t piss off the cops and call it. The rest is already pretty good

I finally bought a defeat device

I cannot tell you how long its been since I saw a pedestrian at 5,000. Probably about as long as I saw a kid on a bike at 6, and for sure around the last time another plane past me then slammed on it's brakes to turn into a Starsucks. Not to mention I think an AP makes pilots worse, not...

Main reason for buying your Model Y?

In this order: Why an EV: 5 year cost of ownership. Environmental value. Fueling at home (wife, winter, etc). Why a Tesla: Best product available by a considerable margin. Why the "Y": Fit my mission requirements. Accelerators: As a solar owner my TCO and environmental returns are much...

    F150 Lightning resale?

All: Any discussion on truck selection and viability needs to come from use case, and preferably by those of us that own and use the things. That said, we can say that truck owners tend to fall into groups something like this: 1) Its cools, and I want to be cool. Maybe manly even. I'm...

Mainly Hwy driving on battery health

If driving exceptionally fast, and/or towing, then the battery drain increase could affect things over enough years. Normal day to day interstate use? Non issue. Aa a vast oversimplification (and I do mean vast), anytime you drain a Li battery beyond 1C (battery capacity/hour) it can be...

    S3XY Knob (initial impressions)

As one somewhat critical of "knob" when it was announced I'm not entirely surprised by some of the comments. I tried, succeeded I think, in being low key in my reservations, but let me ask what your reaction to the below would be: Take below pic but substitute 6 "buttons". Now much smaller...

Filing Formal Complaint: 057 Technology Battery Plans

Not an unusual reaction, but not an entirely complete perspective either. Not that I'm right and you're wrong, for I may misread your intent entirely. However, as a past moderator of other sites I may have a few perspectives worthy of consideration: 1) It's not unusual for a few folks to...

@wk057 Perhaps I owe you an apology, and if so please accept same. When I posed three things we did not know as questions I did not mean to imply you owed us those answers. They were intended as rhetorical questions highlighting just some of the aspects we didn't (and did not need, nor...

    CCS adapters for only $40?

There are two answers 1). It’s a passive pin conversion. Anybody can make a good converter cheaply. Did they? 2). What’s a ruined trip worth? Or a F’d up charging port? Me? I made a considerable charging investment when I went EV. Wall charger, CCS adapter, Mobile Charger with an...

How often have you NEEDED a CCS adapter

As in had to have one or park it? Once. The only SC in 60 miles was dead on what I think was Labor Day weekend. I had a CCS adapter for the convenience of being able to choose any charging site and saved my trip. And that of a few others whom I stuck around to help. I do not travel...

    Low cost tire thoughts MYLR

You do you, but the cost of mounting and etc is such that rare is there value in a cheap tire. Personally I'd buy a car needing tires for the same amount I'd pay for a car with cheap tires. How would I control short term costs? Cooper, Yokohama, Falken, etc.. Lower cost but still...

    Highway range loss?

I find it substantial. As you know drag has an exponential relationship to power demand, so… Dropping in behind a fast moving semi is magical. I don’t notice much drafting anything else. Not knowing your typical habits it’s hard to say. On my “Y” on a calm 70 degree day I’m around 310...

Why are these CT's not sold?

An estimate without datapoints? Isn’t that called a wild assed guess? 2/3 of my 4 wheel autos are trucks. I most certainly use the trucks for truck things. Which is why I think CT is for posers. Well, it might be good for drug dealers and disaster preppers too. But for those of use using...

Does EV charging actualy cost more than gas?!

@DCGOO Sir, did those rates include transportation costs? Golly, those rates are not only below cost of wholesale generation not too far from you, they are below transportation costs too! I mean good for you, but wow! I can sorta see a low off peak generation cost, but I’m shocked (pun)...

So many thing: 1). I suggest you stop charging it like that. Best you do a few searches here on how to charge, etc.. 2). Battery range estimates are…. Estimates- don’t expect them to be exact. 3). All estimates make assumptions about how you drive, conditions, where you’re going, etc. one...

How much are you paying for electricity?

Back on point, how do I report “zero. I generate more than I use”. 😇 Mike, until I get more clarity I’m reluctant to release my state. I can say these things: Our winter energy cost in my area runs around .10 per kWh. Out non winter rate runs more like .15 Both include distribution. Those of...

What do you miss out on with the RWD M3 (new refresh)

Jer, I can say these things: 1) When I fisrt started shopping EV's and PHEV's I did not notice the braking difference. I suppose some of it was my newness to EV regen braking, some the sheer number of cars I'd tried, and finally the short time I drove them. 2) Now, having owned a YLR for 18...

J1772 and CCS charging issues -- random issues or do I need to visit SC?

OP: Yea, something isn't right with your car. What's odd is NACS using the same power pins for DC and AC, so why the car socket is over-heating on AC and not DC makes no sense to me. Still, it melted how many adapters? Sure seems like the car to me.. Let us know what you learn!

What do you miss out on with the RWD M3 (new refresh)

I’m sure you know this, but that lower power means lower one pedal braking. I didn’t, still don’t, think I need 400hp in my wife’s daily. But damn is the braking difference between that and an RWD significant. I’m now glad we have the AWD. Ymmv.

    Drove a Mach e today

I pretty exclusively use KW. I suppose it comes down to how you think. But then I used to use how many gallons of gas I needed too. And the most common measure of battery energy is Kw H. Of course for any charger it has one rating: KW, just as we buy gas in gallons. I’m thinking it...

Adjusting Onboard Route Planning for Bikerack Range Reduction?

Only experience. I’ve been short on enough interstate trips that I’m certain slowing down and drafting a semi makes a huge difference. Takes bit for it to reflect in increased projected range remaining, but happens. This cannot occur unless it’s dynamically adjusting. However, I also agree...

Adjusting Onboard Route Planning for Bikerack Range Reduction?

I don’t know how nav projects energy projections, but it does, regardless of JKads full stop claim, include driving dynamics and power used. It is not always optimistic either. You can slow down , say if you’re short on power, and it will reflect same and increase projected range. My bet is it...

Why do we have to Adhere to Electrical codes for EV circuits?

As I recall NEC, (210.17) and quite a bit of Canadian code is similar, (rule 86-300) specifies 240v EV charging be done on a dedicated circuit. Thus making cherry picking splitter code moot. You wanta go off and decide what you can do on your own? Have at it, but don’t expect those that...

Should tire pressure be 42 pounds or 42 pounds per Tesla?

At different times I’ve posted on tpms accuracy testing, Efficiency at different pressures, load implications, and safety. Search is your friend. However, to be succinct: I trust the Tesla TPMs values I run 37-38 unless I’m towing or flying, and the latter is more a feel thing.
