Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

It'll be interesting when anyone does stats on FTEs per vehicle between legacy Fremont and optimized Shanghai (and after ramp, Austin and Berlin). Of course, financially-speaking, 1 US FTE != 1 China FTE, so labour cost per vehicle is a different metric (I guess without a union, we don't...

We get along well, @StealthP3D , but I think you owe @tivoboy an apology. Not about being right or wrong - we're all guessing, right? - but because you insulted him for even suggesting the SP was going a lot lower. Let's keep it friendly. A simple disagree is fine.

how much mileage do you lose if you remove the aero wheel cover?

I have driven with the Tesla caps only since the start (I think the M3 Aero covers are hideous, although I like the new MY ones much better). I drive in Canada (winters down to -30 C / -22 F) and find I attain the same driving range as Tesla's planner suggests depending on my speed. So I think...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I like to think the stock market is, more or less ⅓ fundamentals (revenue, cash flow, strategic leadership, etc.) ⅓ luck (good or bad, paradigm shift, black swan, interest rates, "wait - who got hit by a bus?!?", etc.) ⅓ emotion ("I have a feeling the stock is going to 1,400, and I'm pretty...

Haven't seen this posted - US Q4 sales YoY. It's a very specific comparison (comparisons to previous COVID periods), but still, interesting: Note that VW, Audi and Merc hadn't reported yet.

How Long Would Battery Last? [hypothetical - sitting in gridlock]

When the ICE is sitting 'off', where is the residual heat from the engine going? Not into the cabin! It's warming the air on top of the hood. Very wasteful. Now maybe it still gets more heat into the cabin per % of fuel / battery, but but.. argh! ICE is so inefficient!! /rantoff.

Would you sub to autopilot if you got to choose what it came with?

I think you're asking if we could still pay for EAP over FSD, would we? YES. I got EAP with my 2018 Model 3 and I love it. I prefer driving (quickly) in the city, but for long highway drives (I did 7,500 miles Ottawa > Mexico > Cali > home in 2019) it's great.
  14. jkirkwood001

How Long Would Battery Last? [hypothetical - sitting in gridlock]

The advantage of an EV is that you can use heating only proportionately to extend the battery. In other words, you could heat the cabin only to a tolerable, well above freezing 10°C (50°F) which doesn't use the max heater and uses little energy. In a gas car, the motor is either idling "full"...

Terrific perspective, @Singuy . And on that note, an update on how close we are to Amazon's market cap (and how quickly TSLA got here): TSLA worth 33% less than AMZN 2 years ago, TSLA was worth 92% less than AMZN AAPL worth 159% more than TSLA TSLA worth 2 ½ the combined EU auto market (excl...

Wait a minute. When you and I bought ARKK, we bought into them selling TSLA whenever it passed 10%, so no foul. But I'm really disappointed that all their other picks are collectively doing so badly!! Last month, I sold half my small ARKK investment at a loss and bought more TSLA

I agree with you that financial planners et. al. prioritize their interests above yours. But I don't think it follows that the all-in approach is universally better. Question on charging. [can I run an extension cord from my apartment window to my car?]

I disagree that they are very different, and I suggested 110v may be sufficient for OP rather than the less recommended extension of 220v. I think this is a helpful contribution - based on my real experience - so I don't think you need to be so defensive.

Question on charging. [can I run an extension cord from my apartment window to my car?]

To all those recommending against it, I have done so at our cottage since 2018 with no problems - summer and winter. Below is a photo where my car parks, although it's not plugged in here. I run a standard ~50 foot extension cord from the cottage's outdoor 110v plug and set the charge max to 10...

@Don TLR good granddad! I also bought one (1) share for my uncle @$1100 around a month ago. He lives on a small army pension but was envious of my TSLA stories. That week it dropped $100 so I sold, swallowing the loss, and rebought at $1000 without him knowing. One share is crumbs to me (I...

I would just find this sad for the Mission. Diess and Elon are sympatico, which means his ouster would be anti- carbon reduction for VW. Notwithstanding VW's dieselgate scandal, they are one of the only OEMs truly making a serious effort to switch to pure EVs.

Is this supposed to be inspiring, Nissan? I mean, do you think by 2030 half the buying public will want to buy your pure ICEs?? Why not just say "🎉 By 2030, we plan to be on the road to irrelevancy! 🥳"

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Absolutely agree (ditto). The data we collected could only hint at this (i.e. low # of shares and high leverage is more risky than high # of shares and high leverage, since, as you say, in the latter I can afford to lose more dollars linearly). Age is also relevant since I may have put up with...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Yeah, that descriptor was a bit off - I should have used "can you say 'all in'??" ;) It's also misleading because if someone has over 25,000 shares, they could have over 75% of their investments in TSLA while still owning a nice house / island!! But I've found it messes up results if you...

Interesting feminist take on electric cars: This article proposes that electric cars - 1/3 of the European market in 1900 - failed because they were seen by men as being too feminine. Then why are you following Tesla? Why do you believe in Elon? Surely his goals are about what we can do, not why it's useless to believe in what's possible, right? I disagree on your outlook on life. Elon's optimism has been what's got us this far. "Don't give in to the dark side!" 🙂

*ahem* POTUS? In my mind, it's less corruption and more that the government concludes that Tesla won't need any help being successful, but that the OEMs do. I don't subscribe to the government-is-useless-save-my-tax-dollars point of view (maybe it's because I'm Canadian), but part of the...
