Front suspension, sway bar links possible rattling.

You didn't need to put a hex key in the center of the stud to keep the ball from spinning? I'm not too worried about getting the old ones out but I don't want to damage the new ones putting them in.

Front suspension, sway bar links possible rattling.

If you can take pictures, notes, video, whatever when you're doing the job that would be great. I looked at doing it back when I was getting the clunking noise and it looked like to get them off you'd need to remove the brake rotors. One of the sway bar link nuts is buried inside the knuckle...

HV Battery to subframe bolts hanging loose

It varied, but mostly only one. I just posted that video because there were 2 so it was easier to hear. It was as if something was shifting into one position, then when I turned the opposite way it would do it again to another position. 2 months later and still no pops anymore.

Front suspension, sway bar links possible rattling.

Available on Rockauto now too for slightly cheaper. I also checked with the SC and they're ~50 each from Tesla. Personally I'd get the amazon ones as returns tend to be easiest but good to have options. Up until a few months ago all I could find other than the official parts were for RWD cars.

    Model S Trailer Hitch Installation

That's roughly what I've seen with my utility trailer (~800lb) at highway speeds. I suspect it's more about the wind resistance than weight.

The Hy-Vee has a restaurant inside, decent food but nothing special. I get the sushi from the grocery portion often and it's good. Otherwise there are a few places across the street. They are.

    Turning clunk from left front

For those following this thread and not the one I linked, tightening these 2 bolts completely eliminated the clunk/rattle I had, as well as made the car feel much tighter driving. Add it to the list of loose bolts leading to noises...

HV Battery to subframe bolts hanging loose

After driving around yesterday trying to reproduce the clunk that led to all this, it's completely gone. Apparently a pair of M14 bolts make a difference when properly torqued.

Scrolling wheel on steering wheel easily breaks. Is the part available separately?

@David.85D that seems reasonable, once you have the broken one should be easy enough to model a replacement with a few design iterations. The other thought I had was designing and 3d printing a fixture to allow you to both drill out the old hex accurately and position the new one while the epoxy...

Scrolling wheel on steering wheel easily breaks. Is the part available separately?

Sheesh, $45 for a cut down hex key? In case the seller is watching I also needed a T15 or T20 bit to remove the button assembly, I forget which though. And it's not necessary to disconnect the airbag connector, I did the whole thing without disconnecting anything other than the connectors for...

HV Battery to subframe bolts hanging loose

Probably a good idea, I have to pick up a set of sway bar links from the SC anyway, I'll add those to my list. Pretty cheap peace of mind. At least I feel a bit better about driving it now until I can do that, we'll see if this takes care of some of the clunking. For reference, bolt is part...

HV Battery to subframe bolts hanging loose

Pulled back the wheel well liner, behind was a hole with some of that butyl stuff covering it up. Inside is what I hoped, a floating nut which explains the large amount of play when it's loose. I attempted cleaning up the threads a bit by going back and forth to work the bolt into the nut, with...

HV Battery to subframe bolts hanging loose

The battery is flush with the subframe, didn't appear to be anything unexpected but I couldn't see where the bolt went. I will dig into it a bit tomorrow though. It seems like there's a floating nut in there since the bolts are definitely threaded into something but they also moved around in the...

    Turning clunk from left front

Well that was interesting..... 2 of my front hv battery mounting bolts just hanging loose underneath, apparently the ones securing the front subframe to the hv pack. Since this is kind of outside the scope of this thread I started a new one here: HV Battery to subframe bolts hanging loose

HV Battery to subframe bolts hanging loose

The adrenaline is still pumping a bit.... 2 of my front hv battery mounting bolts were just hanging loose underneath the car (2015 85D), apparently the ones securing the front subframe to the hv pack. Probably 5mm of gap, I was able to finger tighten the drivers side one and retorque to 115Nm...

    Turning clunk from left front

Thanks for the info. I checked the steering rack bolts and they're definitely not loose. I believe they were replaced a few years ago. I have a set of new UCAs I'm going to put in this weekend, hopefully that helps. It has 115k miles on it and I've read elsewhere they don't last much longer.

Pop/click sound when full turning (Video)

Did you ever figure this out? The video isn't working anymore. My 2015 85D is making a popping noise when turning at low speeds. It seems like something is shifting position in the front end, if I make a series of consecutive turns in the same direction it only makes the noise the first time...

Scrolling wheel on steering wheel easily breaks. Is the part available separately?

I suspect they had a "large" 1/16" inch hex. I used a nominally 1.5mm hex that was actually 1.7mm. The hex key that I actually measured at 1/16 was too small for my taste, although it probably would have functioned.
  24. D

Scrolling wheel on steering wheel easily breaks. Is the part available separately?

Definitely hex shaped, I found the piece that broke off floating around inside the housing and checked. The hole on the rotary encoder is hex shaped as well.

Scrolling wheel on steering wheel easily breaks. Is the part available separately?

@David.85D The broken part was 1.72mm across the flats measured with my caliper. I tried a 1/16" (1.59mm) hex wrench (measured at 1.62mm) in the encoder and while it does turn it had a lot of slop in it. I just got lucky that my 1.5mm hex bit was actually 1.7mm and fit perfect. I also tried...

Scrolling wheel on steering wheel easily breaks. Is the part available separately?

My volume wheel just broke as well, looked the same as what @Pedro.Tx posted a while back. I ended up using the end of the 1.5mm bit (measured 1.7 across the flats) from my mini-screwdriver set (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AL7600A). It pained me to take the bit, but for $14 it's a lot...

Model S Aftermarket CV Axles - Success!

@Raiders83 It's unlikely that the screws do much more than hold the wood together during storage. Pullout strength for what appears to be a few drywall screws is only going to be on the order of 100lb/inch of depth and shear won't be much more. Even if the screws hold, that plywood will snap...

Trailer wiring - Tekonsha ZCI 119251

@ropero I think Uhaul will install them, but I'm not sure. Call around and ask, it's not particularly difficult if you're used to doing it. Regarding towing with it, I basically just have to remember to turn the lights on manually (vs automatic mode) when towing or they don't work properly. I...

    Model S Trailer Hitch Installation

Some people don't like splicing into an existing wire. Personally my reasoning for tapping into the liftgate power wire was that it's already there, fused (30A), and routed safely. Running another wire, especially exposed to the outside, seems at risk of getting torn off/damaged by debris or...

    Model S Trailer Hitch Installation

I added the hitch and wiring a month ago, rather than run a power wire all the way to the front I tapped into the lift gate power wire which on my car was the red with grey stripe wire (~14awg). It's behind the plastic panel in the back on the passenger side which you have to remove anyway to...

Suspension torque check - why 4 post lift?

I've noticed a minor creaking noise from the front end when cornering (normal speeds, nothing fast) and am planning on checking/torquing the suspension according to the procedure at Suspension - Front - Check Torque My question is why does it tell you to reinstall the wheels in the middle of...

    Model S - Buying a used 2014 model

I bought a '15 model S with 110k on it a few months ago and had some of the same concerns, here are my thoughts... Cold winters are 30-40? Maybe in CA that's considered cold :) I bought mine from someone in a similar climate, the full charge rated range is 259 out of the original 270 (96%). I...

Trailer wiring - Tekonsha ZCI 119251

I just installed the same light adapter last night on my '15 85D (left/right/tail wires used, left the brake one un-used). I was unable to get the trailer to work unless the lights are set to parking or auto. When the lights were off, the left turn signal and brakes worked fine but with the...

Who has put a 2” tow hitch on an S, with a connection to the trailer brakes?

I had this same question and found an EV dealer in NZ that appears to have done just that. They use an older P85 to tow a car hauler around, from the looks of it the trailer they're using has trailer brakes. Search "tesla p85 hulk" on google and you'll find pictures/video. It was pretty recent...

Which front transmission fluid to use? 2015 85D VIN 74xxx

Can I tell which revision of front drive unit is in my car short of pulling the frunk and looking at the sticker (assuming it's even visible)? I need to know which fluid it takes. 2015 85D VIN 74xxx (late '14 or early '15 I believe).

    Model S rear hatch sunshade

Tesla made sunshade for the rear hatch. Was used on my 2015 85D, nothing wrong with it I just had the windows and hatch tinted so I don't need it anymore. $20 for local pickup, $30 shipped in the US. Located in Verona, WI (Madison area). The blotchy looking spots in the picture are just drops of...

Model S Aftermarket CV Axles - Success!

Curious how much they charged you, I got a quote for $635, 500 parts and the rest labor and taxes. Based on the labor portion it doesn't seem like it will be a bad job so I opted to order the parts and replace myself. RH axle was ~100 on RockAuto.

Model S Aftermarket CV Axles - Success!

Agreed with you there, in fact the new axle just arrived yesterday. My question was regarding noise, I've always noticed CV axle boot damage before the axle starts making any of the standard noises and replaced them so I don't have a good sense for what it sounds like. The most common noise...

Model S Aftermarket CV Axles - Success!

I have a '15 85D with 113k on it, been noticing what sounds like a can with a rock inside coming from the front end when I go over rough roads up to 40mph or so. Pulled the front wheels off thinking it was sway bar links or other suspension related issues and found my passenger side front...

Sway Bar Links - Best $100 Spent

Any chance you still have the old ones and want to measure the distance between the balls (center to center) and the stud size? I'm having similar issues (2015 85D, 113k) and my local stores have universal links in a variety of lengths. Also, could you tell that they were loose when you had the...

Front suspension, sway bar links possible rattling.

Just for future reference, I sent in a service ticket to ask about the parts, they are indeed different. The dual motor sway bar links are 1030603-00 (at least for my 85D). The ends are 180 degrees apart from each other vs 45 degrees or so on the RWD version. They wanted ~270 to diagnose and...
  46. D

Front suspension, sway bar links possible rattling.

Yes, but they're cheaper (~$10 each) and more importantly readily available from RockAuto. I don't have a local SC and I'm trying to support 3rd party vendors selling Tesla parts whenever possible. It's possible that the rockauto parts are from an OEM supplier anyway.
  47. D

Front suspension, sway bar links possible rattling.

Any idea if the parts on RockAuto are RWD specific or would work with the dual motor version as well? I have a '15 85D that has started to have some front end rattle over bumps. For ~$10 each it seems like worth trying to solve the rattle.

    Questions about a 2014 model S P85+ for sale

Probably too late for the OP but for posterity Rich Rebuilds has a nice quick video on things to look for buying a used Tesla Battery/drive units are the big cost things to ask about though, although by 2014 I think they're pretty good(?).

2015 Model S 85D - Fast charging rate at SuperCharger

Same here, it had been up around 120kW at first and tapered off. I left around 50% and it was still going at ~80kW. The car has 112k miles on it and according to scan my tesla about 2/3 of the total charging has been at superchargers. Makes sense as the previous (and first) owner did a lot of...
