MASTER THREAD: Range Loss Over Time, What Can Be Expected, Efficiency, How to Maintain Battery Health

There was this tweet: "no issue going to 5% or lower SoC." Other references from Tesla are the EPA applications it submits for each car (latest example). They have used the same language for at least a few years about battery pack storage. "STORAGE Do not store the battery pack in a manner...

    250kW supercharger disaapointment

Yes, that battery pack has more energy but there’s at least some evidence (more evidence) that it has a more conservative charging profile. Frankly, I haven’t paid much attention, maybe it’s resolved, but the higher capacity was a result of a chemistry change which could have compromised the...

    250kW supercharger disaapointment

Since this thread is about expectations, I think it's important to mention that under optimum conditions, the Model 3/Y should only charge at 250 kW for less than 5 min before it starts to taper at around 26% SoC. The simplified math is 75*0.25/250/0.95*60 = 4.7 minutes. This is starting from...

    19" replacement OEM tires

As mentioned in the other linked thread, this report was in error as it referred to Model Y tires, not Model 3. The 235/40R19 ProContact RX T1 tire is still available for the Model 3. It remains as probably the most EV-friendly all season tire in that size.

Tesla-Spec Continental ProContact RX on Closeout at Tire Rack

Yes, you got that right; you were 100% wrong. ;) The Model Y 19" had a T0 and T1 spec ProContact RX tire in 255/45R19 that TireRack is now discontinuing. Those are being replaced by a T2 spec tire. This tire size does not fit the Model 3. The 235/40R19 ProContact RX T1 tire is still...

Model 3 power loss while driving - right hand dots

This is a good one. The loss of power, and the right-side dots, happens at low SoC and very low temps, but I've never heard about the loss of power in more typical conditions. My guess, especially since the car isn't new, is that temperature sensor has failed giving an incorrect indication...

MASTER THREAD: Range Loss Over Time, What Can Be Expected, Efficiency, How to Maintain Battery Health

You might be surprised to learn that the 5-cycle EPA testing goes up to 80 mph, albeit only briefly. The average on the highway and high speed tests is 48 mph and the average speed on the other three is 21 mph. https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml#detailed-comparison The...

Are there any 18" Model 3 tires as/more efficient than the Michelin MXM4?

Yes, but they don’t have the XL load rating needed for the Model 3; specifically, the Michelin Energy Saver A/S. I’ll also note that the Pilot Sport 4 is completely different than the Pilot Sport All Season 4, linked on the previous post, and neither has the efficiency of the Primacy MXM4 T1...

Range differences with Pilot Sport All Season 4 or CrossClimate2 vs Primacy MXM4

This discussion is so confused. The Pilot Sport 4 is not the same as the Pilot Sport All Season 4. They’re totally different, different generation even. The Primacy 4 is not same as the Primacy MXM4 T1. The latter is, among other things, tweaked specifically for Tesla. If you want to compare...

How I Recovered Half of my Battery's Lost Capacity

My perspective: The BMS probably uses a Kalman filter that needs multiple calibration inputs to affect the battery level prediction algorithm. The discharge voltage curve for a Li-ion battery is non-linear so inputs at various voltages, especially at the high/low extremes, are the most...

    19" replacement OEM tires

The OE Conti ProContact RX T0 spec tires that came on your car are no longer available and have been replaced with a T1 spec. Surely the tires are similar but Tesla or Michelin wanted to changed something enough to warrant revising the spec. The T1 spec tires show up on tirerack.com as...

14 Day winter parking at airport - RESULT

Four or five years ago, every fifth post on this site was about phantom drain. They fixed it. Your experience matches mine during quarantine in the summer of 2020. My ‘18 Model 3 used about 1% every six days. In this mode, the biggest consumer of electricity appeared to be when it woke up...

Windows try to “close” after brake pedal is pressed.

Yes. For those of us on the FSD beta fork, this functionality changed with 2021.44.30.10 (10.9). It's possible they just changed the temperature limit for this to happen and those of us in moderate climates now see it whereas the northern folk have always seen it in winter.

MYP on new Michelin All Seasons

The 21" AS4 tires coming on the MYP now are built to a T0 spec, which means they've been tweaked from the generic AS4 tire for Tesla. So all comparisons with other versions/sizes of AS4 tires should be considered in that light. I suspect they added the foam and adjusted the compound for...

    All Seasons MY P

The PS All Season 4 should be able to hold their own in the snow. It's certainly not a winter tire though. I see that it's marked as a T0 tire, which is awesome. This means that it's specifically tweaked by Tesla and Michelin for the Model Y. They probably added the interior foam to reduce...

    250kW supercharger disaapointment

Charging amps isn't as important as charging power as the Superchargers are clearly limited by power not amperage. The Model 3 pack does reach just under 700A when starting from 0% SOC and under ideal conditions but the amperage quickly decreases as the voltage rises. They are about 350V...

    250kW supercharger disaapointment

Per Tesla's presentation at battery day, the tabless electrodes in the 4680 cell design facilitate heat conduction to the ends of the cell which allow a 4680 cell to charge as fast as a 2160 cell (see graph below). So while many people mistakingly think 4680 cells will inherently allow faster...

    Range Loss with Cargo Weight?

I've never heard of that in the US market. Must have been a mix-up or something. Range will be a little less than the MXM4s. I'd keep them if you were already planning to get a winter tire set, but I'm sure someone would swap wheels/tires with you. (Needs to be a car with Bluetooth TPMS to...

    Michelin Pilot Sport EV [tires]

I like the Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 that I've used for 10k miles now in 235/40R19. That tire is actually a T0 spec, per the sidewall marking, although tirerack.com doesn't list it that way. This is the tire Tesla sells as part of a 19" summer tire package: "Featuring Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3...

    Keeping Garage Cool

Both of these statements are true, but battery degradation is not a binary function. It's not a question of whether the battery is "hurt" or "fine". Li-Ion battery storage temperature affects degradation. Higher temperature is worse. However, the real question is whether the cost to cool the...
