Car & Driver: The Mach E is simply better than the Model Y

How about we try this. The Mach E is better at generating ad revenue than the MY and thus is worthy of more positive media coverage.

Car & Driver: The Mach E is simply better than the Model Y

Two different topics. The post you responded to was in response to thermal management comments by another member. On the issue you raise, yep, my contactor gave me the straight to service your car may not restart message which is at least a little better than being left stranded.

Car & Driver: The Mach E is simply better than the Model Y

Just like Tesla in the beginning. My fist MS laid down quickly. My second pulled harder longer. This last one is an absolute nut job straight through 150 mph. Let's give Ford three tries and see where we are.

Car & Driver: The Mach E is simply better than the Model Y

I've not done the research myself so I'm responding only to the above....... This seems somehow so familiar. BeV manufacturer provides tooooooo much current related performance then has to modify the software to reduce current and "save" the under designed hardware. I vividly remember having a...

Car & Driver: The Mach E is simply better than the Model Y

You can really see the writing on the wall when it comes to the caviler attitude towards producing big batteries for long life service in cars. Tesla made/makes it look easy but it most certainly is not. It was my #1 concern when considering a $100k gamble on Model S in 2012. Having any...

Car & Driver: The Mach E is simply better than the Model Y

Most of the world have forgotten the golden rule "first, do the job". One of my old partners wanted to job out core design and production and concentrate purely on sales and marketing. He wanted to get rid of all that low margin work or, as one of my programming partners used to call it, the...

Car & Driver: The Mach E is simply better than the Model Y

It really amazes me how little credit Tesla gets for doing it as well as they have and how truly hard the task is.

The catastrophe of FSD and erosion of trust in Tesla

It does not now but it did in the beginning. If you shift your butt the wrong way now, it all shuts down and we have that initial clown to thank.

The catastrophe of FSD and erosion of trust in Tesla

Simple It's like the production curve. It's not terribly impactful at the start but the ramp is incredibly impactful. Now, bring the results of that ramp forward, say, five years and you have an enormous impact on "the world". It's a matter of definition and yours is just as good as mine.

The catastrophe of FSD and erosion of trust in Tesla

So the question is, do you try and how much risk do you take in your attempts. Musk's mistakes (apart from being out over his skies on promises) are that he trusts people to behave. The guy that posted a vid of popping in the back seat with AP on shortly after its initial release is proof that...

The catastrophe of FSD and erosion of trust in Tesla

You make good points on a regular basis then you the post above. All I have to do is flip on the TV and see advert after advert for an electric this or an electric that (cars) and it is obvious to even the most casual observer that something in the world has fundamentally changed.
  14. lolachampcar

The catastrophe of FSD and erosion of trust in Tesla

Reading all this it occurs to me that I've seen this Musk movie before. Keep crashing rockets till you succeed or run out of money. Keep pushing out FSD attempts till you succeed or (take your pick) kill someone and get shut down or run out of credibility. The all in Monopoly/Risk approach is...

The catastrophe of FSD and erosion of trust in Tesla

Just a quick sanity check here. The cameras in my MS can see a lot more than I can see and can do so simultaneously. The image processing core digests all those different camera angles continuously without feeling the need to check its email. In short, my MS vision dramatically exceeds my own...

I seem to remember there is a guy needing a lot of storage for building cars. He did graduate work on Ultra Caps. He is using batteries for his cars. I would think if Ultra Caps had an advantage, the guy that knew them reasonably well (and likely still does) would be using them. I think...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

I never really beat on my wife's car at all. I took it out and slowly built heat and transferred pad to the rotor. Feel was acceptable throughout the process and she has had no complaints (although she does not really use the brakes all that much with regen).
  25. lolachampcar

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

Hmmmmm I kinda had a bedding problem with the stock brakes on my Plaid. It was like stopping with buttered banana peals at first which is really bad news. I can imagine some just ripping on the car, standing on the pedal and glazing the rotors so that they will never bed correctly (without...

New 2021 Model S battery cells & packs

GAWD I remember all the BS regarding prepped tracks, individual motor HP and the like. People were yelling and screaming about how unfair and inaccurate Tesla was being. None of it really bothered me as I was too busy listening to my rear end and paying no attention to marketing. The butt...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

Likely depends on how aggressive you are. I hardly ever use friction brakes and, like you, have near zero dusting albeit a bit more on the fronts than the rears. I guess if you are aggressive enough on the handling you could get the rears to dust more. TC kicks in a bit for high speed corners...

Performance of Refreshed MSLR vs. others

I'm cheap. TSW Nurburgrings in 20" worked just fine for me. With the new Plaid/MSLR widths, the dish depth on the rim looks even better. They drop about 10 lbs per corner. The two piece rotors should drop a significant amount as well. It's not so much about efficiency or looks for me as it...

Performance of Refreshed MSLR vs. others

Short answer..... Plaid is stupid fast as in Liter Class Sport Bike in a 16 year old's hands stupid fast. Short of a ChampCar in 3rd with hot tires or a bracket big block dragster, I've never felt something accelerate so hard around 60 mph. The MSLR is really fast and, as others have noted, it...

New 2021 Model S battery cells & packs

I think it is a combination of a lot of things. As others have noted, Tesla has doubled the size of the heat pump in the car which lets them remove a lot more heat when discharging and charging the batteries. The S now charges in the range of 900-1000 miles of range per hour for a very large...

The catastrophe of FSD and erosion of trust in Tesla

Brad, Thanks for the well thought out write up. I do think Tesla is all in on the vision approach but I like Elon's logic. He may indeed fail by either being too late to market or being unable to get to market with a useful product within his term at the helm. That said, I'm ok with the play...

The catastrophe of FSD and erosion of trust in Tesla

Being an engineer and having been way over enthusiastically out over my skis on many occasions, I'm willing to forgive a lot of Elon's hype. Being an engineer and having been way over enthusiastically out over my skis on many occasions, I never once considered FSD on any of my or my wife's S...

    Wait times for Solar?

Slightly related. Started with 9.4kWdc 8 years ago using 305 Canadian Solar panels. Local utility is on the warpath against net metering and our bill has steadily been rising (more driving on two cars and increased rates) so I looked into changing the panels and micro-inverters. Found...

Dragy times for Plaid and LR

Omar, Thanks for answering one of the questions that has been nagging at me. It "feels" like my car is getting a bit slower. I had one of the newest Ducs hang with me and even pulled at bit at one point from a rolling 70 mph. It sounds like your results are indicating Tesla is not playing...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

The "new" inside out approach has been used in aircraft brakes for a very long time :). I guess it is "new" to cars. On aircraft, the rotors are simply hand aligned with the wheel ID when installing the wheel without need to hydraulically lock the rotor with the caliper. Here is some...

Model S battery intact in place of net metering [DIY home storage using Tesla Car battery?]

I've been looking at the Enphase IQ8 micro inverters that can do solar island when the power goes down without the need for a battery. These inverters fold back power draw to match home consumption and, obviously, can be paralleled. Their 10 KW-hr battery system uses the IQ series inverters to...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

I see Girodisc now has front rotors for the Plaid at $900 a set. I've not used Girodisc and was wondering if (1) anyone has tried the Plaid units or (2) if anyone has experience with Girodisc in general? I'm specifically thinking these (and I am not affiliated with BB or Girodisc)...

Model S battery intact in place of net metering [DIY home storage using Tesla Car battery?]

https://www.solaredge.com/us/products/pv-inverter/single-phase#/ Just a quick look at this PV inverter indicates it will accept up to 480 Vdc which seems more than compatible with a Tesla battery pack. PV => Battery => above inverter The key would be to do a MPPT with an output compatible with...

Model S battery intact in place of net metering [DIY home storage using Tesla Car battery?]

I've been slogging my way through the EVTV stuff and they have done a lot of what I am interested in. The problem is having to listen to the presenter belch hundreds of words to say what could be put into a single sentence. There are few if any technical descriptions. They seem to rely almost...

Model S battery intact in place of net metering [DIY home storage using Tesla Car battery?]

This is a shout out to the most nerdy of my Tesla peeps. Florida is trying to nuke net metering (yea, I know. Instead of charging net metering customers for grid use and growing distrubuted production, FPL wants to force net metering customers back to FPL's primary mission of burning fossil...

Car & Driver: The Mach E is simply better than the Model Y

I remember considering my first S. My primary concerns were battery and power train longevity. It was basically a $100k crap shoot. As it turned out, the batteries in our S' have done reasonably well. Loss of capacity has been excellent (warm S. FL helps) and there has been but one contactor...

Car & Driver: The Mach E is simply better than the Model Y

My take away from the last FSD AI video Tesla released was that AP will, at a minimum, be able to watch everyone around you all the time and have continuously updated deterministic paths plotted for all of them. Given this, Tesla should have the most robust driver safety system on the planet...

the real Tesla Model S killer made and used in China only

Saw a BYD at a FPL fast charging station the other day. It was on a tour around the US for display to potential dealers. Outside looked like post Soviet Chinese typical higher end car but the interior was nice indeed. More options are on the way. Some even from places people like to hate.

Suspension / handling going from P85D+ to refresh long range S

The braking depiction sums up my assessment of the brakes. The M5 CS is depicted as the Plaid's only equal on stopping distance. They feel like crap (on the Plaid) but work ok for single use emergency braking. Add that to never really using them given the PM motors clock the car to a stop...
