12V battery charging, voltage limits, capacity, etc.

Update: Found out my OBDLink LX was powered while my M3 was sleeping. Not sure why that changed or when. I unplugged the OBDII adapter and the car now sleeps around 28 hrs before topping off the battery; however, the bad news is it takes about three hours to perform the top off instead of two...

Tesla's trip range is way off.

I agree in general you should not need to draft but I had an instance where it was required. I had no idea the headwinds on a final 120 mile leg were probably 40+ (guess). The trucks were going slow but above 50 MPH and the tumbleweeds were flying directly towards the front of the car gang...

Did you know the 3 heats the battery (actively) constantly while DC charging at any speed or temp?

Does your Model 3 have a heat pump? I assume you used Scan My Tesla to verify neither the heat pump or stator motor windings were not actively heating the traction battery? Regards

Speed (and acceleration) Kills (Range that is)

True and faster discharge rates eats tires up quickly especially on a RWD Model 3. The OEM tires on my RWD Model 3 lasted less than 15K miles. I have done very few launches since I replaced the tires. Fast acceleration is costly on any car.

    Tesla Model 3 Charging Issue

What version of firmware was installed a few days ago? Was the 12V battery the original. If so, it would be over four years old. I believe the 12V battery many times fails, after a firmware update, because it must run many 12V components for a fair amount of time during the update. I see the...

    Power Conversion System (PCS) failure

I am sure you mean 6/21? My June build/July 2018 delivered M3 had the PCS replaced last August. Found out after the PCS was replaced there was a TSB for the June built Model 3 cars. Tesla never mentioned the TSB. I think my replacement PCS is the third rev of the board. I can't help believe...

    Tesla Model 3 Charging Issue

I would take a look at the charging history using the Tesla app on your smartphone, it gives you a 30 day history. I normally do not leave my M3 plugged in while parked in the garage; however, the car has been plugged in for the past several days. On day three I noticed a red "T" which...

OBDLink is now powered while car is sleeping

I have the LX version but believe the flashing blue LED might mean your MX is trying to pair to your phone. When the green power LED flashes, I think that means the MX is in sleep mode? My LX has a button to initiate Bluetooth pairing looks like the MX also has this button? Maybe someone who...

OBDLink is now powered while car is sleeping

Has anyone recently measured the Model 3 current draw from the 12V battery when the car is sleeping. The voltage after my M3 tops off the 12V battery for around 2.5 hours is about 13V and the voltage after 28 hours of sleeping is about 12.5V. Appears the power drain from the 12V battery might...

Charging with "excess solar energy" (without Powerwall)

I read somewhere in the past where someone did what you want with a Gen1/2 Tesla Wall Connector and a Raspberry Pi. I think they used the serial control connection normally used by the Master WC to talk to the Slave WC. Not sure if this would work on a Gen3 WC or if the two pin wired serial...

OBDLink is now powered while car is sleeping

Update after unplugging the OBDLink MX, the time between top offs of the 12V battery is now 27 to 28 hours. With it plugged in, the time to the next top off was typically 17.5 hours or less. I know for sure the MX was not powered in the past not sure when that changed. I have a buddy with a...

Model 3 completely dead this morning. What an experience. [dead 12v]

Thanks for the info. I had read a 9V battery would no longer work and to use a 12V battery. Did not know the 9V would still work if the car battery voltage was below 9V. Looks like it would be smart to not rely on a 9V battery to open the frunk.

Model 3 completely dead this morning. What an experience. [dead 12v]

If you monitor the voltage at the 12V battery posts, you get all the information you need regarding its charging/use status over time. I have a Bluetooth battery monitor device connected to the 12V battery posts which gives me around two months of voltage history. BTW, this device draws 1 ma...

Low Quality Grid detected while sitting in car after it's charged

Just a heads up, I got the same bad grid power error when my PCS board would not charge over 32A on any AC source capable of 48A. The cost to replace the PCS board out of warranty is over $1600. Search this forum for the thread where I discuss details of the issue.

OBDLink is now powered while car is sleeping

Yeah, I know what you mean. The Model 3 does not have an OBDII port as delivered. I and many other owners have installed an inline OBDII breakout cable that allows connection of OBDII devices. Will report back to this thread when/if I learn something new. Maybe other SMT owners will chime...

OBDLink is now powered while car is sleeping

That may be true now but in the past 12V was never present when the car was sleeping (AFAIK). BTW, I use the OBDLink MX to access bus data using Scan My Tesla. I am going to plug the MX back in and view the LEDs through the rear window several times during the sleep time. It could be it is...

OBDLink is now powered while car is sleeping

The OBDLink MX in the past was not powered when the car was sleeping (no additional phantom drain). Notice yesterday the two outer LEDs on the MX where illuminated while the car was sleeping. According to the spec the power draw is 2 ma in sleep mode and 69 ma otherwise. Since the power LED...

Model 3 completely dead this morning. What an experience. [dead 12v]

Is the 3A draw while the car is sleeping? If so, that is high. Last time I measured my cars asleep current it was about 500-600 ma.

Any reason not to hook up a battery tender to the 12 volt battery ?

I also have a Bluetooth monitor on my Model 3 but my time between top offs is 17hrs+/- and the time awake charging is 2+hrs (maybe something changed hardware wise between our cars?). When I purchased the battery monitor a few years ago, anytime the car was awaken it stayed awake for at least 4...

Why is my battery pre-conditioning for Supercharging 90 miles from the charger?

It makes no sense to me that the car would be dumping heat ,via the radiator, in any circumstance with cell temps around 50F. Have you verified the radiator valve position via SMT when the battery cells were between 50F and 80F. Using SMT, I almost never need much, if any, preconditioning. I...

App Charging Stats vs Wall Charger Stats

If you do not precondition the traction battery or run the cabin heater while plugged in, the app appears to be fairly close. I am not sure if the energy used to heat the traction battery, to allow charging, would be included in the app stats? The battery cell temps have not been below approx...

Did you know the 3 heats the battery (actively) constantly while DC charging at any speed or temp?

I do not necessarily disagree with most of your post observations, however, follows are my thoughts. When Tesla Engineers eek out more efficiency while the car is being driven, most people applaud the effort; however, it seems some of those same people poo poo when someone suggests Tesla could...

    Power Conversion System (PCS) failure

Since the majority of long range owners probably never charge beyond 32A, a problem with one of the three 16A PCS charging segments is not realized until another segment fails or the owner attempts a charging session over 32A. With the telemetry the Tesla vehicles have, it's a good bet Tesla...

Can NOT release parking brake after HV Pyro-Fuse blows? 12V available.

Just watched a video on Youtube where the owner indicated he could not release the parking brake (using tow mode). The Model Y was rear ended hard enough that the HV Pyro-Fuse blew. The 12V systems and center screen appeared to be fully functional. Since the parking brake functions using 12V...

Cars with FSD/Summons, detect fire and automagicly move away from danger

Garage fires are fairly rare but they do happen. A garage fire is bad but if a 75KWH battery pack catches fire that could be a hum dinger of a fire. I tested Summons with my Model 3 in the garage with the door closed yesterday. The car waited for the garage door to open then backed out and...

    Power Conversion System (PCS) failure

For anyone reading this post it should have been 3 years and 6 months, since the warranty is 4 years or 50K miles whichever comes first. I will be verifying my warranty replaced PCS before the 4 year mark to confirm it still charges at 48A. Like others, I can't believe some of the early units...

A close call with running out of battery power driving home

I have used several Chargepoint+ stations that were level 2 J1772 AC chargers. Was the chargepoint charger you were trying to use a DC CCS fastcharger? If so, the Tesla adapter will not attach to the top portion of the CCS connector, even though it looks like it should. I believe the top...

Tesla Winds and Elevation Web Browser App

Just tried TeslaWaze on my Iphone and my wife's Andriod and it seemed to work fine. After setting up the API keys on both phones, TeslaWinds should also work. Awhile back Google made a login security change that was not supported in the Tesla browser for several months; however, that was...

New Smartphone App "Charging Stats" observations and questions

I monitor the power drawn at the point where my UMC2 plugs in. During the last two charging sessions the KWH's used were the same at the monitor point as the new Charging Stats. Could be off by +/- 1KWH because neither had decimal point precision. The Smartphone app also displays the KWH...

Tesla Wall Connector - Hard Wired or Pigtail?

I agree with you; however, when I plug a Camco PowerGrip 10-50 plug into a Camco 10-50 receptacle it takes considerable force to unplug. This would be even harder if the neutral was installed in both of these Camco units. When you mate one of the blade pins before installation into the...

    Difference between Nema 14-50P & 14-60P?

    Difference between Nema 14-50P & 14-60P?

Discounting the neutral connection what is the difference between a 14-50P and 14-60P if they both support 4 gauge wire? The two straight blades and the ground appear to be physically the same on both. To verify my replacement PCS board would charge at 48A, I installed a oven/range 14-50...

How do people determine/measure power usage while awake topping of 12V battery?

The lions share of the 200-250wh of energy used by the so called phantom drain is used in topping off the 12V battery and all the systems requiring energy while doing so, as apposed to the energy used while the car is actually sleeping.

DC to DC converter: what can it reasonably handle in terms of using your battery as a power source?

DC to DC converter: what can it reasonably handle in terms of using your battery as a power source?

With the cars telemetry, it sure seems probable that Tesla could deduce energy was drawn out of the traction battery for ancillary purposes (especially if it was many KWH). Currently the DC-to-DC voltage output is around 14.7V while topping off the 12V battery and around 13.4V (float voltage)...

High cost of charging according to TeslaFi?

We are on an EV TOU plan here in northern Nevada. The EV rate from 10PM to 8AM (10 hours) is approx 6 cents/KWH TTL. I do not include the $15.25 meter charge in my calculations because you pay that even if you used no electric in a given month. AFAIK, many electric providers have additional...

Failed Model 3 HV Battery - Out of Warranty - DIY

Here is an excerpt from a web link article published July 8th 2018 from CleanTechnica. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/07/08/tesla-model-3-chevy-bolt-battery-packs-examined/ Tesla has employed a large number of parallel cells (46?), each with its own fusible link, allowing cells to fail...

    Power Conversion System (PCS) failure

My M3 was built in June 2018 so the Service Bulletin referred to in post #36 below should have been applicable. I was not aware of this until today and Tesla made no mention of it at anytime during the debug and repair process!

Failed Model 3 HV Battery - Out of Warranty - DIY

Please do because I thought the cars were designed to allow a cell fuse wire to blow/open and continue on operating normally. If true, from a laymen point of view how does this differ from cutting the wire to a bad cell that did not blow on its own? Would seem somewhat logical that out of...

Failed Model 3 HV Battery - Out of Warranty - DIY

I for one do not consider reading this thread a waste of my time. When there are thousands of Teslas out of warranty, it will be nice to have several repair alternatives so the cars can remain road worthy. I would probably never do what the author of this thread did, but I sure can learn for...

    2022 Model Y LR in -55c/-67f

I think you a basically correct. If the car is plugged in, after the charge level drops around 3% below charge level set point, the car will wake up to bring the HV charge level back to the set point. If the battery is below around 39F, it will be heated to that point to allow L2 charging to...
