Unsure if model 3 would be right for me - advice appreciated

How can an ICE vehicle give you 90% of what a Tesla provides? Certainly they both provide transportation... but the similarities stop there.

Ah, okay. Thanks for clarifying. I've got the vegan leather. It's fine by me.

2 Questions from new Tesla owner after first long trip…

So basically, in any state whose laws make it difficult for Tesla to resell you electricity, they instead rent you the charger by the minute.

    Car turned off while supercharging

If anyone with a Model 3/Y hasn't already experienced this, I recommend you do this one your own to be prepared. When you're one a slower, low traffic road - just hold both scroll wheels for a long 4 seconds. Everything still works outside of the car, but the electronics inside will go...

Is a RWD / Standard Model 3 ok for a 140 Mile daily commute?

@Juice780 - did you make a decision? Also worth noting is that cold winter weather can seriously reduce range... like as much as 40% (worst case scenario). A cold battery runs much less efficient, plus heat usage, plus precipitation and headwinds. I'm in New York though, not North Carolina. If...

    Car turned off while supercharging

I disagree that there's a habit of shutting down, and with the idea of shutting down before a road trip. This type of post will scare the public away from EVs. There's nothing special that needs to be done with the car, just drive it. And don't freak out when you don't understand something...

2 Questions from new Tesla owner after first long trip…

Yeah, range anxiety is more about the driver's comfort and trust in the charging network than it is about a lack of chargers. I've been close to an empty gas tank on a road trip before and had a hard time finding a gas station in rural PA... definitely had range anxiety that time, but luckily...

Mismanaged - The Problem With Government-Funded EV Chargers (TMC Podcast Clip)

This is a solvable problem. We could require landlords to install L2 charging for each apartment by a given date (let's say 2035), and offer a tax credit for those that get it done by 2028. Forget about major metropolitan areas (e.g. NYC) though. Public transportation FTW.

Mismanaged - The Problem With Government-Funded EV Chargers (TMC Podcast Clip)

If they actually *wanted* to make EVs, GM would've followed through with the EV1 in NINETEEN NINETY-FIVE. They'd have a 20 year head start. Instead, the took all of them back and crushed them.
  21. F

Mismanaged - The Problem With Government-Funded EV Chargers (TMC Podcast Clip)

I disagree. Legacy auto manufacturers actually made a good deal of their revenue from repairs and aftermarket parts. Possibly most of it even. They try to get the upfront purchase price as low as possible, then make it back up on parts.
  22. F

Mismanaged - The Problem With Government-Funded EV Chargers (TMC Podcast Clip)

I have no problem with this. Tens of billions of taxpayer dollars have been given to ISPs to do *nothing*... they just paid it out as executive bonuses. Would've rather had chargers built. That said, these dollars won't go to Tesla, right? They'll just build more shoddy chargers like...

    Ordering problem

Perhaps the margins are much better on the LR. For that matter, with inflationgate everywhere, maybe the RWD is being produced at a loss.
  24. F

    Ordering problem

Everyone's experience will be different. For me, I ordered on the website and picked up my car a few weeks later. Easiest / best car purchase experience I've ever had... it beat the "stealership" experience by at least 10x.

what can cause 800-900Wh/mi result in consumption graph?

Because they ran the AC for a long time while *not* driving.
  26. F

    WiFi not turning in automatically

Which school is that, exotic dancing school? I've noticed issues with WiFi... I usually have to manually connect, and recently it didn't show any networks at all (reboot fixed it). Also, typing in an SSID and password then hitting the "Add Network" button just cleared the form. So broken.

  29. F

Is a RWD / Standard Model 3 ok for a 140 Mile daily commute?

Perhaps. But degradation, road trips, changing jobs are all reasons to consider the LR. For now at least, range is a very important spec for an EV.

    COVID Infects Tesla 12V batteries

With Elon's "the best service is no service" mantra, certainly 12v battery failures create a *lot* of service requests. If the 12v was added to resolve issues of draining the traction battery, then they should be able to bypass the 12v when it's dead. Certainly opening the tow hook port and...

    Alternatives to a tesla *gasp*

That depends on your reasons for preferring the S. I have a 3 but drove an S loaner from the service center once. It was dookie. The 3 is a blast. Not a whole lot has changed since 2019 though... heat pump, heated wheel, matrix headlights, chrome delete and more. Still the same car though.
  37. F

Has anyone gone from a Model Y to a M3P

I agree to an extent. I've come across many mechanics that are anti-EV though. Once someone has been outspoken against something, they often are too prideful to change course.
  38. F

    Alternatives to a tesla *gasp*

I suggest test driving a Model 3 before you rule it out. I've read multiple posters who test drive both and decided on the 3 because it was more fun to drive. Other than Tesla - it's not so much the car but the SuperCharger network that makes the difference. If yours are all CCS then perhaps...

Is a RWD / Standard Model 3 ok for a 140 Mile daily commute?

If it's in your budget, LR all the way. More range, AWD, premium interior features, and you'll take delivery much sooner. The used market doesn't provide a big discount right now due to the backlog for new orders.

Has anyone gone from a Model Y to a M3P

I suspect that the local Ford dealership won't be servicing any F150 Lightnings... probably just a point of contact. Certainly better than a service center 7 hours away though. You think the ICE mechanics at a Ford dealership will be touching a high voltage BEV? (not an argument, a legitimate...

Has anyone gone from a Model Y to a M3P

I routinely fill my Model 3 with children. Often a car seat behind me, a booster seat in the middle, and a third child behind the front passenger. The Model 3 is a fairly roomy sedan in my opinion (not a Model S or anything). There's ample room for a car seated child's legs behind the driver...

    Why my Wh/mi so bad?

No need... I wasn't arguing, just discussing. We're not enemies.
  43. F

    Why my Wh/mi so bad?

My physics knowledge is lacking, but this doesn't ring true to me. Given a fixed speed, getting to it in a shorter amount of time should take more energy. Reducing the time to full speed isn't free. Right?
  44. F

    Why my Wh/mi so bad?

This seems hard to believe. Rate of acceleration does not reduce efficiency? For sure, slower starts are more efficient.

It went up after demand far outstripped supply.

Unsure if model 3 would be right for me - advice appreciated

For sure the Mazda 3 is a lot cheaper upfront, but you'll be kicking yourself every time you're pumping $6 gas or sitting in the waiting room during the semi-annual oil changes. The total cost of ownership might even be less on the Mazda, but only if you discount the breathing of toxic fumes...

Best Way to Get Rid of the Old Non Tesla Car

Tesla will give you the worst value, then Carvana (and others), then private sale. Private sale will maximize your value. If you don't want to go that route, Carvana and others would be the next logical choice. I drove cross state in my previous car to pick up my Model 3, so trading it in to...
