My charging experience... Is this right?

My guess would be that you hit 72kW Superchargers. Or were at 150kW stations but sharing with somebody else. We'll need more info such as: Power (kW) of stations you visited (if unknown, then their locations; we'll figure it out) Whether or not somebody else was there (but really we'd need to...

    MIA Supercharger

Could be a software (mapping) glitch, the stations were offline for some time but now are back on and somebody forgot to update the status, who knows? Plugshare says it's there (as no doubt that was you that put in the last checkin).
  3. RayK

    MIA Supercharger

Suggest you call the V-Go station at (864) 295-8550 and you might find a friendly and helpful person who can tell you firsthand if the Superchargers are: 1) still there and 2) operational (i.e., he/she has seen people there charging in the last couple of days).

Is a backup mobile connector necessary?

As far as I know all new Teslas from the factory will come with a J1772 adapter. They can be several areas: center console, glove compartment, lower trunk. In addition to Amazon, you can find them on eBay. Occasionally, you can also find them at shop.tesla.com.

    2018 Model 3 won't start

Just curious... are they going to send someone via an interisland flight with the battery? Plane fare would probably cost more than the battery.
  6. RayK

Is a backup mobile connector necessary?

There's more public chargers with J1772 connectors than there are places to plug into a 120V or 240V outlet.

Unsure if model 3 would be right for me - advice appreciated

<s> Yes, I paid cash for my car in 2018. So I did have the money. </s> I can't (don't want to) plug into a 120V outlet in my garage. The only outlet readily available for charging is daisy-chained to an outlet that has a GFCI in it (don't ask; it was that way when we bought the house). Said...

Can I drive to the airport and leave my car with some company for them to rent it out?

Closest thing I can find is AURA. They even have a Tesla Model 3 on their web page. No idea if they operate in the SF Bay Area.

CHAdeMO suddenly not communicating with public EV chargers -- HUH?!!

I'm back at the WCEH CHAdeMO station tonight and it is a free charge. Plug the CHAdeMO adapter into the car, plug the CHAdeMO handle into the adapter and then push the Start button. Easy as that. Didn't have to use the EVCS app at all. Put 108 miles into the battery; 27kWh.

CHAdeMO suddenly not communicating with public EV chargers -- HUH?!!

So I'm on a trip to Oregon and found what looks like the only CCS1/CHAdeMO station in Ashland. It's a WCEH (West Coast Electric Highway) station next to the Shell gas adjacent to I-5. They both are 50kW max so it didn't really matter if I performed the CCS charge port update prior to my trip...

SAE J1772 adapter no longer included in purchase?

@Torirem Either way, if a J1772 adapter comes with the car standard or it does not anymore, I'd suggest you buy one anyway. Worst case, you'll have one to keep at home (since you already have the J1772 charger) and the one delivered with the car, kept in the car. Best case, from your...

Best method of recharging at home?

No, that shouldn't do any damage to the battery. About the only thing that can "harm" the battery is repeated fast DC charging up to 100%. Any level 2 charging, even up to 60A @ 240V is not going to negatively affect your battery.

Is a RWD / Standard Model 3 ok for a 140 Mile daily commute?

And if Hertz isn't available, you could see if anyone is renting their personal car using turo.com.
  16. RayK

What is considered a "long trip" when considering charging to 100%?

I would call a trip where you need two or more Supercharging stops to be a "long trip". I'm planning to drive from San Jose, CA to Ashland, OR (~400 miles) next week. Using ABRP, I've charted out stops in Williams, Cottonwood and Yreka, with charger arrivals at 20% and max charges at 85%. One...

    Leaving charge port open....

Not sure how that was done either. With the car locked, you can use the Tesla app and open the charge port door by tapping the "lightning bolt" icon. The car will remain locked. I just did this with my car sitting in my driveway. However, it only stays open for 2 minutes. I installed my...

    IceCo Freezer

BTW, the usable height if one stores an object in the lower trunk (from floor to trunk edge) is just under 32".
  19. RayK

    IceCo Freezer

Lower trunk area tapers inwards at the bottom. Useful footprint for rectangular objects is 12" x 24", so not enough room for the JP40 (13.8" x 26").
  20. RayK

    IceCo Freezer

I don't have a JP40 but going by the published height of the unit (17.5"), it will barely fit inside the trunk of a 3. My 2018 LR measures about 17.75" from floor to rear package shelf, with a WeatherTech floor mat installed. I don't think you'll be able to open the lid unless you have the...

M3P total dollars spend on charging during first ~47K miles

Assuming that you never charged at home, then your monthly electric cost has no relevance in this calculation. $1792 / 46813 is just under $0.04 / mile. Not bad for today's environment of $5/gal gas. At that price, an ICE vehicle would have to get just over 130MPG. When I got my car in July...

Unsure if model 3 would be right for me - advice appreciated

Given the current cost of gasoline in the US, I'd opt for getting any EV at the moment. Sure it may cost more initially than an ICE, but that should be offset by the lower cost of operation (now and for the foreseeable future) when expressed in simple terms of cents per mile. You live in an...

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

If I'm not mistaken, the TE pins and sockets are designed to accept 20AWG (0.52mm²) for the best fit and the maximum size possible (0.56mm max. WIRE RANGE spec). Anything smaller will fit but could have trouble getting a good crimp. Larger gauge wire (12, 16 and probably 18AWG) cannot be used...

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

Final answer from FalconFour are two 10K resistors and not the 22K resistors. Those were used in a previous design of the cable and later found to be not as accurate for sensing temperature.
  29. RayK

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

The 470 ohm resistor that FalconFour is talking about is what is added in series to a 2.2K resistor in order to obtain (nearly) 2.7K. It has nothing to do with the 47K resistor.

Tesla front license plate in Iowa

Not from IA, but in California, it's been typically said that if a LEOs sees a missing front plate (which is required by CA law), it's a good enough reason to pull you over. Where you're then under inspection for other possible violations, under the discretion of said officer. In my 50 years...

"Proactive" 12v battery replacement - good idea or overkill?

$85 for the battery, $34.50 for the labor to r/r it and CA/local taxes of $7.75. Yes I could have done it myself and saved the $34.50 but it's cheap insurance in case something goes wrong with it. They can't blame me for anything I might have/have not done properly. I'm pretty sure that I...

    Tesla wall connector not working?

A good example for others who might have the same problem in the future if they happen upon this thread. Your wall connector appears to be a Gen 3 (since you said it has WiFi). I have a Gen2 wall connector sitting in a box in my garage (no WiFi). I may eventually get it connected but I don't...

"Proactive" 12v battery replacement - good idea or overkill?

Mobile service just left my house after replacing the 12V battery and leaving me the old one. Vehicle before the Tesla was a 2000 BMW 323i. Had it for 18 years and I believe I replaced the battery twice, so about 5 years on average. However, one of those replacements was probably due to the fact that an adapter for an aftermarket CD changer was not powering down when it should have...

"Proactive" 12v battery replacement - good idea or overkill?

I'll be at 4 years this July and currently at 23.5K miles with the original battery. Going on a trip up to Ashland, OR next month so I'm seriously considering proactively replacing the 12V battery even though I've had absolutely no problems with it.
