Nobody was forced to change their configuration. Tesla offered it, and some people accepted it. The caveat is that Tesla included the promise of 2021 delivery but then didn't do it for a lot of people. I'm still glad to have declined the change and just wait it out.

Tesla does not remove FSD from a car sold through a third party. They apparently have done it when they take / buy back the car and resell it, but if they deactivated FSD on a car that never passed through their hands then that would be illegal.

My understanding is that, due to weight, a car carrier cannot hold a full load of Model Xs.

Very likely they’ve done the analysis so that the mix of deliveries for these older orders are spread out. If the quarter is on track to do well, then a little hit with delivering older priced orders can be absorbed.

If you have an existing auto insurance policy, most states give you that window (usually 30 days but I have a vague memory that it's 7 days in California) to add a vehicle to the policy that you have legally acquired. If you have an incident during that window, the car is considered covered.
