Successful retrofit of passenger lumbar on 2021 Model Y

Yes. It works fine for factory fitted passenger lumbar. Also the first thing I checked. Build date would be an architectural decision though. So if you've seen this in a car, please let me know, on the other hand I'd wager that I have a pretty good background and network for sussing out this stuff.

Successful retrofit of passenger lumbar on 2021 Model Y

I’m very confident it’s a config- like most modern cars it contains a vehicle configuration that includes the list of configurable vehicle features (which is over and above what you can select as an end user) to accomodate a standard software package for multiple markets where Tesla may decide...
  3. O

Successful retrofit of passenger lumbar on 2021 Model Y

Of course. Just offering more clarity on what you might want to try to tell a tech willing to try and make this work.
  4. O

Successful retrofit of passenger lumbar on 2021 Model Y

I think all they have to do is go into toolbox and update the vehicle config to include passenger lumbar, then trigger another update. It's not that different from activating HomeLink, I don't think.
  5. O

Successful retrofit of passenger lumbar on 2021 Model Y

Mine doesn’t work anymore. I assume Tesla wasn’t targeting the retrofitters directly but rather the aftermarket ’massage’ modules which can wear out the lumbar supports, so the update probably pushes some rate limit feature or gives the car the ability to disable the modules if used too...

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

Oh yes, this makes sense if your vehicle bus is disconnected as the canserver will still operate on only the chassis bus (and some signals like speed are on both, whereas others like blind spot are only on the under seat chassis bus, and the gauges like charge state are only on the vehicle bus)...
  7. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

That's odd, state of charge should be one of the signals that is the most robust. If you tap the battery does it show range? I think tablet vs phone has different tradeoffs. Tablets are almost always 16:9 so it's a bit crowded albeit larger, and phones are smaller but have a wider aspect ratio...

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

What i have heard from the source is that brand new cars have a diagnostic connector at the base of the A pillar on the passenger side (not sure if this is the same on RHD models like yours) that carries both buses, but no idea what it looks like.

I made a video showing how my mount works since some people had questions. Also, a nice mention on Jalopnik today as well as Hackaday last week.

I'm on it. ELM327 is a pain, so it'll take a little while, and I still need to get it working to make sure it performs adequately. One thing you can't get with ELM is any autopilot or blind sport status as that's on a different bus.
  11. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

I'm working on ELM327 support. You won't have any autopilot or blind spot data but all the basic vehicle info and performance gauges should work and the device should be easier to get a hold of.

Successful retrofit of passenger lumbar on 2021 Model Y

I would still check. As I’ve said before, if Tesla makes this change, it will be when they want to, and not based on what model year is printed on your registration. Since the cars have been shipped without lumbar for a while, there’s no way to know if and when they’d change the harness, and it...

You definitely can. Would I buy one? no. Would I build something that requires someone to buy a CAN injection device? Also no, especially injecting anything related to powertrain.
  15. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

No, the canserver cannot inject can messages into the bus, and it's a bad idea to do so because you don't know what would happen.

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

Not in a way that could be converted into next turn info. List of signals here: https://github.com/joshwardell/model3dbc/blob/master/Model3CAN.dbc It's basically a bunch of numeric values streaming at high speed, nothing like text. You can use split screen mode and have waze/abrp/google maps...

Lol, ok file a bug on the GitHub project, and I'll get to it eventually, I will be more motivated if you get a CANserver and end up using it. :)

    Cell Phone as Binnacle Display

There's also this mount but I didn't find the trim to be that close of a match, much easier than designing your own, though. Mine arrived with a broken charger but the included trim was useful because it had an easy to model slot that I could design mounts to slide into, before I just decided to...

    Cell Phone as Binnacle Display

I was unsatisfied with the available options so I 3D printed my own mount and used screws to attach it to a a spare piece of steering column trim I got on eBay. The app I wrote myself wih my wife and it uses a CANServer to pull data at 100 Hz from the car, including turn signals, AP status, and...

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

If you have a CANserver for SMT, yes. It's the only hardware that can easily tap into the chassis bus for autopilot data. Other adapters are on the "someday" list. This is a fun open source project for me so maybe someone with experience implementing support for other adapters can contribute, if...

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

It’s close to a release candidate, starting to load it into Google Play for testers. The best experience I’ve seen is on a Pixel 2XL. I’ve tested on anything from a Nexus 6/7, Xperia Z3 (Android 6.0.1), and my Z Flip 3. The best device I think for the money is a Pixel 2 XL because it doesn’t...
  26. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

Yep, already done. That pic was from my initial test and because of my layout it's easiest to put the newest gauges on top. Now that I confirmed operation they're arranged as you suggested.
  27. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

Added brake temps (though I have since altered the layout to be more consistent and gracefully handle removing the front motor gauges for rwd cars). I also did some slight tweaks to the font height to closely match the v11 UI.
  28. O

Successful retrofit of passenger lumbar on 2021 Model Y

Model years aren’t useful in the context of Tesla because the only reason a Tesla has one is because you cannot register or insure a car without one. Different cars built at the same time may have different features, and cars change constantly. The only way to know is to pop the rear cover and...

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

Over wifi, you can connect to the CANServer via a local AP it sets up or have it connect to a hotspot, and WPA encryption is supported. I use a hotspot running on my dash because that preserves access to the internet through a SIM card I have installed, so I can run google assistant, maps, music...

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

Oh yes you are right, chassis bus is under the seat (at least in North American market cars). I use both but it gracefully falls back to Vehicle only, you just don’t get any autopilot data but since the live blind spot displays are driven by the ultrasonic sensors (which are on the Vehicle Bus)...

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

So my wife and I realized we need to rtfm and were missing a bunch of updates from CAN. One for loop later and everything is now buttery smooth. Apologies for the raw video but kids are home and just wanted to get this uploaded.
  33. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

I do love this explanation! I will leave the smoothing to others, I find that the power meter actually works pretty well as a reflection of input power to the motors, which correlates directly to accel (first derivative) and in the car it’s a good visual cue. Applying a calculus based approach...
  34. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

I have not, I find that using an OLED display mounted to the steering column works great and I know enough about how difficult it is to engineer a proper HUD that projects in a plane over the hood that I would find the windshield reflective one disappointing. OEM huds use a combination of...
  35. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

My point was simply that an OLED smartphone screen is much smaller than the cluster on the S.
  36. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

Yeah, it's just literally a round peg in a square hole, on a screen that is maybe 60mm tall. More appropriate rate of change would be done with a moving tape display which is less space inefficient for a rectangular viewport. Dials exist because of mechanical gauges.
  37. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

You tap the power meter to toggle between kW and hp. There is no setting to dampen mph updates, because this is raw can data. Might be an issue with my server. It seems better lately. Dials for speed are a waste of space and I will never implement one- smoothing output introduces hysteresis lag...
  38. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

It will definitely work on Android 7.1.1, unclear how long you'd have to wait to see if someone else has the exact same tablet as you to see if it works. It's very likely to work.
  39. O

Something my wife and I hacked together this week- an Android app that acts as an instrument cluster

7.1.1 should work, but it doesn't support split screen. If you want to run a tablet, I'd recommend getting a mount like this and a AMPS complaint tablet holder to attach to it. That way it's farther from the steering wheel. If you do like what you see, I'd recommend getting a used smartphone...

Not in the way you'd expect as a human driver. If you have a trip planned the trip planner does keep track of predicted energy use and actual for telemetry purposes. https://raw.githubusercontent.com/joshwardell/model3dbc/master/Model3CAN.dbc

    Dashboard app

Plan is to open source it once I get it cleaned up and posted to the google play store. It's dependent on a CANserver which is a pretty awesome bit of tech. Some tips here on what it entails: Tips for CAN Dash And a quick vid of it in action I have not implemented ELM327 or OBDLink support...

So, I haven't had issues, back of the shell is getting at most like 80-90F and I haven't seen evidence of thermal throttling. A tesla in some ways is great for an application like this because the air vents can cool the device directly, and cabin heat protection provides a ceiling for interior...
