What should my ideal charge percentage be?

I agree with what @DayTrippin said.....shallow cycles are better. What I wanted to add is that one "cycle" is 100% to 0% and back to 100%. If you go from, let's say 20% to 70% (a 50% discharge cycle), that basically counts as half of a charge cycle. Therefore, a 25% DoD is a quarter of a cycle...

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

As a follow-up to this, I just discovered that my laptop has a BIOS setting to limit the charge to 80% so now I can keep it plugged in and it will not go-over 80%. It's an HP Elitebook. I'm glad to see that manufacturers are recognizing battery health measures and giving users this option.

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

I don't have hard data, although it might be out there....but, from what I've learned (mostly on this forum), it's better for battery health to charge more slowly than quickly. So I stand by my opinion that, if it were me, I would try not to charge at the fastest rates very often, especially not...

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

Since you only supercharge, a ceiling SOC of 50% would mean that a lot of your charging will be at quite a high speed which is not great for the battery. If I were only supercharging, I would try and not go below 50% very often so that the charging speed is a little slower and thus easier on the...

Don't want heater on, want vent

The Hyundai Kona Electric has a heater button and an AC button. With neither of those depressed, it is fan-only no matter what the temperature setting. If you feel cold, you can hit the heater button. If you feel hot, you can hit the AC button....simple.

$175 "diagnosis fee" on warranty work?

My BMW dealer wanted to charge a diagnosis fee to fix the charge port lock on my i3 (it wouldn't lock so it didn't work on CCS). They said they would charge the fee no matter what, even though the problem is obvious and doesn't need any real diagnosis., even though it was under warranty.

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

In that situation, you can always stop at a supercharger. There will likely be one within range @ 50% charge.

    Shorting Oil, Hedging Tesla

It's definitely a great marketing feature, however, I understand that you need several thousands of dollars of extra hardware to make it work. I thought it was enabled through the Ford wall connector EVSE, but it's not.

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

I realize laptops don't have liquid cooled batteries and sophisticated battery management like Tesla, but I had a mobile workstation for about 5 years. It ran very hot when in use. This was before I understood battery health techniques. The laptop was plugged-in 24/7 and was used Monday through...

How to plan a road trip - how long will it take?

Same here. Range anxiety typically goes-away once you own the car. I had range anxiety back in 2014 while awaiting delivery of my Model S. Two days after delivery, once I realized the battery meter drops about the same rate as a gas gauge, range anxiety went-away for me and never came back.

I used to spend more time per year getting my oil changed than I do charging my car publicly.

    Phantom Braking

A friend of mine just texted me asking what's going on with Teslas "literally stopping in the middle of the highway....the cars stop operating". He said he just heard it on the news. I wonder how many other people heard it that way. Amazing how people don't fully listen to the news and that's...

    Ford Mach-e

I have a friend who loves Tesla but he's going to get a Mach-E solely because Consumer Reports gave a negative review of some sort for Tesla. I tried to explain to him that CR is biased, but he's convinced that they are legit and that he won't by a Tesla because of it. Amazing.

Tesla Service - Getting worse by the day....and weirder

Looks like the tech used a torx bit instead of hex to tighten it. If the bolt is 100% unremovable (I doubt it), they'll have to replace the whole steering column.

    Hummer EV

I bought a 1st gen GM product new (2008 Pontiac G8 GT). It was a great car, but in the shop a lot (all under warranty). It was inconvenient, but that's the price you pay for having the latest and greatest. I knew that going-in so it wasn't a surprise, but the car got a lot of praise for the...

Electrician installed my NEMA 14-50 receptacle upside down..

In my parking garage, all of the 120V outlets have the ground on the top. My Tesla UMC and Hyundai portable charger both have an angled plug designed with the assumption that the ground pin would be down. So, I have to secure the wire pointing-up so that it doesn't bend at the joint and...

A FLAT should NOT be this difficult!

I'm not sure if you absolutely need adapters, but I've seen people use hockey pucks as a precaution. Even the ones you buy (see link below) are probably just hockey pucks with nubs added https://abstractocean.com/products/tesla-jack-adaptors I'm not convinced that you need the nubs. The weight...

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

Better to charge more often with shallower cycles. A full cycle is 100% to 0 to 100%. If you charge from 50% to 60%, that's only 1/10th of a cycle. It's not the quantity of charges as much as the depth of charges.
  25. gavine

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

I personally feel like 80% is too high for a car that just sits. I'd say ideal is 50% but up to 70% would be better. Just my opinion. Slower charging is supposedly better for the battery so, if you don't need the speed, turn it down. By the way, the updated app allows you to change amps...

    Warranty Questions

Just because it's financed, doesn't mean you can't sell it. CarMax, Vroom, etc. will pay-off the loan and give you the difference (or charge you the balance if worth less than you owe). Vroom will give you an offer online so you can at least get an idea of what it's worth without having to bring...

Thoughts on this install for a 14-50 install with subpanel.

When you cold start them to pull out, they spew rich a mixture of exhaust nastiness. Backing-in isn't so bad because the engine and catalytic converter are heated. But cold-start pollution is terrible.

Thoughts on this install for a 14-50 install with subpanel.

Like @jcanoe said above, I would still upgrade the wire to 6 awg. Some say 8awg is not allowed with 40A car charging. Either way, the extra cost would be minimal.

    Driving on Sunshine

Well said and very true, but it still feels good knowing that you're charging directly from your own panels. That said, still better to charge overnight.

Anyone use this Romex 6/3 cable during install?

I ran NM-B across my 10ft ceiling and in the conduit down the wall to the connector, I stripped the sleeve so that the wire in the conduit was sleeveless. A hybrid if you will. Not sure if that was necessary (inspector didn't seem to care) but I did it to be safe. I used a threaded wire clamp...

Anyone use this Romex 6/3 cable during install?

I used the Leviton from Home Depot. I tightened the lugs well and then after a few weeks, re-tighted them again. I was defintely able to get more tightening the second time. I recommend doing that if you are using Leviton. I did the same to the lugs on the breaker as well.

    Shorting Oil, Hedging Tesla

Many people in the USA only keep their cars for 3 years (on a lease). So, as more EV choices become available, more and more of those people will choose an EV for their next car.

Does solar make sense in Texas?

Ironically, I'd rather have an electric car during a power outage. Chances are that my battery has good range in it before the outage happens because I charge it every day. People let their gas cars run low before they fill-up so there would very likely be a percentage of cars with very low fuel...

Does solar make sense in Texas?

Maybe they compared the free electricity from solar to charge their cars vs. what the cost of gas would've been? Depending on how much they drive, that could certainly accelerate the payback.
