New Tesla model S owner here

Best thing to do with these cars is just to go out and drive, these cars were made to be used, even a 2015 Model S today is as usable (if not more so thanks to lots of extra chargers everywhere as ever! We've been to Europe once already this year, cannot wait for the next trip in a few weeks :)...

Driving to France and Switzerland - advice needed

European driving is much easier and quicker than the UK, unless you are visiting big major cities. I see you are heading to Switzerland........unless you have something specific planned for France, skip it, you can get to Geneva in one day quite easily. Once in Switerzland you really do have...

The thing I thought I’d like the most about my Model 3 is the thing I like the least

^ These accounts bare virtually no resemblance to how we are using and finding AP in our 2017 X. We did 200 miles of M1/M40 this weekend, AP handled 90% of M-way driving, 90%+ of lane changes, and to be 100% honest I recon if the EU regulations allowed the car to change lanes without human...

The thing I thought I’d like the most about my Model 3 is the thing I like the least

You don't have to move the wheel, just put some pressure on it. I have to say it does what it's suppose to do, make you hold the wheel at all times. I don't think I've ever just used TACC without AP, not sure I can think of a situation on the Mway when I would just use TACC?

The thing I thought I’d like the most about my Model 3 is the thing I like the least

Or in our Lexus I could have just moved and caused a crash but the car has actual way to intervene to prevent a crash!

The thing I thought I’d like the most about my Model 3 is the thing I like the least

Phantom braking use to be an issue some 12 months ago, but it rarely happens now if ever in our car. Lane changes are always smooth, my wife cannot tell the difference between me or AP doing it....so that might be just my own driving:). Blindside detection actually work really well in the...

The thing I thought I’d like the most about my Model 3 is the thing I like the least

That sounds like a totally different system to what am experiencing in ours!

The thing I thought I’d like the most about my Model 3 is the thing I like the least

Is Tesla running Two different sets of AP code? On our 2017 X, if you close up to a car ahead, it'll just at the distance I set, and just follow. I've never experienced what you describe on AP?

The thing I thought I’d like the most about my Model 3 is the thing I like the least

Other cars have better driver assistance features than AP on M ways? Can you post a link? AP on the Mway has been damn good in my experience for the last 12 months+. I use it pretty much the time on Mway runs, lane changes even in traffic is pretty smooth/good these days, I can barely remeber...

    Price hike

The AA need to sack their finance broker! That's cheaper than any mortgage product on offer, personal loans normally cost at least 1-2% more than mortgages.
  12. G

    Price hike

Inflation is heading to 11%, interest rates are now shooting - mortgage rates are already at 4% vs 2% in spring, the stock markets must have lost trillions over the last few days, and with Russia now ready to cut off gas supplies to Europe who knows what the next 6 months will bring. If you are...

    Price hike

'The Model X saw the worst of the price increases. A Model X Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive Long Range increased from $114,990 to $120,990.' Based on Model 3 US/UK pricing conversion, a brand new versions of our 6 seater X with FSD is going to come out at £120K, including FSD our cost...

    Alternatives to a tesla *gasp*

Changing for the sake of changing or a change in use needs? We've had our X for over 5.5 years now, the only car Tesla builds that remotely interests me is another X, but as you say you cannot get one and the cost is now easily 6 figures if you tick just a few options. For the same money the...

Tesla open up the SuC network [in UK]

Exactly, and to expand the number of chargers Tesla HAS TO allow access to all brands, I believe it literally will be the LAW soon if not already! So the sooner Tesla complies with legislation the better.

    X to Y 'down'grade?

Just got back from a really nice holiday in France. Went in convoy with an ID4 Pro, which I think has roughly the same range as a Y and crazy charging speeds even at 90%. Despite the X having less range and slower charging the actual travel times were identical with kids in the car. And in...

Tesla open up the SuC network [in UK]

We took our X to Devon last year this time, first half term after lock down restrictions eased. The traffic at times was horrific, 20-25mph for hours at a time. Charging and the X however was never an issue, none at all.

Tesla open up the SuC network [in UK]

It's almost as though most EV owners these days have never experienced ture range/charger anxiety. I did a 300 mile round trip once in our old Leaf that would should 68 miles of range at 100% SOC......add in the 'excitement' of wondering if the next Ecotricity charger would work or be blocked by...

Gridserve Charger Sites in UK [megathread]

Had the pleasure of using my first none Tesla SC since 2017. All I can say is WELL DONE Gridserve. It was a pair of chargers that use to be run by Ecotricity, the difference in user experience couldn't be more different. No stupid apps, contactless, clear step guides, long cables, and I believe...

    Salary sacrifice Advice Appreciated

Given how little deprecation any of these cars are seeing at present I cannot see how this statement is correct. The cheapest used Model 3 onsale right now is a 2019 car at £36k, say the owner got £33k trade in. The original price was £41k ish, so over 3 years its cost the original owner £8k...

    Salary sacrifice Advice Appreciated

Slightly misleading is putting it mildly, irresponsible and if it was a commercial product open to all, almost certainly be open to 'miss selling' litigation claims. The NHS pension growth is directed linked to CPI+1.5%, guaranted. So potentially you are looking at near 10% increase this year...

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

Quite right, probably should have always been this way.....efficient houses, and use less energy to start off with.
  23. G

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

Am surprised more people on here aren't the same. Its only this month our gas bill is less than our electricity bill, the price cap increase is really noticeable. Come this winter our gas bill is going to be as high as £28 PER day. Going to a heat pump etc wouldn't help either, as we know...

Opinions wanted: bad 75D range or too high expectations

Remeber back in 2016 Tesla was desperate for cash and sales figures. We actually ordered a 60D X (software locked 75) when it was available, the cost at the time was £64k base price, the base price of a new X in the UK is now £95k+!! Inflation accounts for some of that but 100D became...

    2018 75d with 75k or wait for Model Y

We have had a 75D for 5.5 years now. We can actually trade it in for new LR Y for zero cost.....but why would we? We have 1 kid, yes the LR Y has more range and a better infotainment computer but there is no getting around the fact it's basically a 3 on stilts. They are both great cars, but...
  26. G

Anyone in the UK 'upgraded' their Model Y suspension?

So we are now pretending an 8am commute on the M25 is like Max and Hamilton going full attack in FQ3 shaving time off each corner, and a Y (or X5) are some kind of race tuned machines that turn public roads into Spa :).
  27. G

What made you choose a Tesla?

Was looking at a XJR supersport or F10 M5 back in 2015, but than for some reason tired a Nissan Leaf and a test drive in a P85 S.....the rest as they say is history :). Since getting an EV I've found my focus on personal transportation shift quite radically away from wanting absolutely 'speed'...

Tesla open up the SuC network [in UK]

Tesla doesn't need revenue, a single tweet from Elon generate more financial turbulence than most small countries GDP. What Tesla needs is government support to get grid access where there are blockers in the way. Boris has plenty of mates every where, if one of them gets to charge their iPace...

Tesla open up the SuC network [in UK]

We drive to Cardiff all the time, am not sure how many people have ever visited South Wales for a school summer holiday.....even we have never been more west of Bridgend :). The key here is ofcouse the route south/north down the M5. You would hope Tesla can now get some kind of 'priority' to...

Rising electricity costs, reflected in big increase in supercharger rates

1000 miles road trip in our Lexus IS300H with current fuel prices would be £130. Don't forget though taxation on electricity is virtually nothing compared to petrol/diesel and that will change as EV usage increases. In all likely in a few years time DC Rapid charging will be more expensive than...

  33. G

Gridserve Charger Sites in UK [megathread]

If I was a local planner there is 0% chance I would approve Tesla been allowed to construct 'Tesla only' DC rapid charging sites versus some one like Gridserve. Tesla need to open up their SCs ASAP, otherwise there will be no new Tesla SC sites approved in the future.

In your opening post you said the car was repaired and passed an HV inspection. Was this not done by/at Tesla?

    CPU upgrade

That would be 'odd' good for us consumers but from a business sense, non sense to support such an old car with latest cpu. It's not even as simple as a cpu swap, as the software needs to a rewrite as the new S/X has a landscape screen, and the new CPU as I understand it is running totally...

  37. G

    CPU upgrade

A Razyen CPU from the MCU3? MCU1 was always too slow to start with where as MCU2 is absolutely fine. Tesla also designed the MCU2 to be swappable with the MCU1 as at the time the S/X made up most of car sales. What's far more interesting is if the AP4 FSD cpu (which is 100% coming, and almost...

Buying used Tesla Y or X.

Our 2017 6 seater X has been out of warranty for 6 months, I have no real concerns about longterm ownership and plan to keep it atleast till 2025, maybe longer. We could trade it in now for a LR Model Y for zero cost but am not sure why we would do that. The only real appeal of the Y is longer...

what is the true cost of owning a Tesla MX ?

105k miles is pretty reasonable for needing air suspension work. Equally if you want reabiltiy plenty of choices offered by Toyota :).
  40. G

Do I buy a second hand model S or new model 3 ?

There are now more 3s on Autotrader than Ss, and soon there will be more 3s than S+Xs combined. S/X used prices are now pretty much static, you still need £30k to get into half OK 8 year old S and £50k into a 5 year old X. The 3 is simply far more common, and prices of older cars are now...
  41. G

what is the true cost of owning a Tesla MX ?

These are 'known' costs. LED lights on any of the major car brands can and do fail, sadly they all cost $$$$ to replace. Air suspension also fails with time/age, its common to all brands. Am surprised at your replacement costs. Tesla uses MB parts essentially, and local garages should be able...

what is the true cost of owning a Tesla MX ?

Extended warranty in the UK anyways doesn't cover lights or air suspension.

possible first time long distance + wrong side of the road. Tips? Mad?

In our younger days we did Dover to Interlaken in a day, left Dover B&B at 6Am was in Interlaken by 4pm. Was in a combustion car back than, only stopped once for fuel some where in South France, I pretty much did the drive for whole trip. I wouldn't personally recommend doing that kind of...

possible first time long distance + wrong side of the road. Tips? Mad?

We are doing this in the summer too :). Taking the ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo though as it cuts down on the driving gets us into Oslo whilst 'sleeping'. We'll have 6 people in the car once we hit Oslo, and booked an amazing looking place for 5 nights in the fjords around Alesund.

    Instavolt - 57 p/kwh

    Nothing?
  46. G

    Instavolt - 57 p/kwh

You are using only 9kWh per day with ASP, and charging EVs!! Our yearly electricity usage is 5Mwh from the grid, that excludes 3Mwh of solar and all gas heating. Without solar and using electricity for heating I suspect we would easily be at 1-1.5Mwh per month.
  47. G

    Accident damaged Tesla Model 3

I would approach that very carefully with Tesla. They can and have disabled DC rapid charging (including SC) in cars that have been damaged than repaired but not formally 'inspected' by Tesla (some on here got a quote from Tesla and it was a four figure sum I seem to remember).
  48. G

    Apple CarPlay in the UK?

Whilst technically am sure it's not hard for Tesla to add CarPlay, as long as Elon is the boss it's not going to happen. 'Personality clash' I think is a nice way to put it, or just grown men behaving like kids (like we all do). Same thing happened with Mway charging in the UK when it looked...

Elon Musk: A future worth getting excited about

Are all Model 3s now 'vision' based only? Loads of noise about Phantom braking on the US forums when Tesla first moved to vision only, which seems to have no improved. About 2 years ago I remeber my wife pretty much banned me from using AP on road trips because of phantom braking, but now it's...

Elon Musk: A future worth getting excited about

L Not the same, but 'yielding' logic in FSD beta already seems pretty impressive. The only way FSD can develop for the situations you are wanting is for European/UK testing to start properly, which hopefully will be this year.
