Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

There is debate about how quickly the supply chain issues will be resolved. Large companies are spending big money on related projects at major consultancies which suggests no easy or quick fix.

Agree. New baseline on Monday after P&D, and then it could be time for 3-4 weeks of aggressive strike CC sales — unless the P&D is a significant beat that suggests volume will cover the extra 2Q charges.

    Papafox's Daily TSLA Trading Charts

Most brokers settle trades at the end of the day, I guess after trading hours, so there is the possibility to close the position in the AM and reopen after a recovery in the PM, if that actually happens. There is a clear extra element of risk in that approach.

Compare a Tesla wo/EAP vs. one w/ at $6k more, or let’s say $60k vs. $66k. No comparison for people who do a lot of highway driving (like me, almost 7 years in an S 70D with EAP).

I was driving in traffic today in front of a Mustang e-thing for several miles, I kept looking back at it through the rear camera……….main thought was I wonder if he’s looking at my S thinking he made a big mistake. (Used male pronoun since I think most women are smart enough to avoid Fords.)

Yep, it’s hard to project which is more “costly”, losing x months of premiums or buying-to-close.

Wiki Selling TSLA Options - Be the House

Agree with @vikings123. In general, you get a better roll (amount of strike improvement and credit) if you roll before it goes ITM, but that has to be balanced with the potential the CC won’t be ITM on expiration day, and the opposite possibility that the SP could rise even farther away from...

Seeking ideas and non-advise: I have 9/16/22 $1100 and 1/19/24 $1000-$1400 calls purchased near ATH which have dramatically declined in total value. What are the pros and cons of rolling these out and down to a lower quantity to strike prices around the current SP (for a small net cost) and...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

If Tesla were to buy more BTC, would it then be the weighted average purchase price that is compared to market price in determining the P&L charge? So, with rough math, if they bought twice as much, the charge was be 1/2 what it would be without further purchases?

All my remaining CC expired last week, and I haven’t resold. Feels odd to be out of the action, but probably good with Fed and triple witching uncertainties. Watching for lessons to be learned, itching to get back in.

Wiki Selling TSLA Options - Be the House

Doing same with 6/10 $740 and $765 CC — after seeing your idea several weeks ago of rolling only $10 and 1 week. This seems a really solid approach, to roll and continue to receive income, biding time for a downturn, especially for ITM buy-writes that you can let go if SP surges too far ahead...

Wiki Selling TSLA Options - Be the House

Started the day watching 6/3 CC$755 carefully after Thursday’s SP close of $775 with a cost to close/roll of $26.56. Well, the market overreaction to the “hiring freeze” kerfuffle (a similar announcement hammered COIN) meant I didn’t have to look at it until 3pm, and then it was easy to let it...

Wiki Selling TSLA Options - Be the House

I haven’t done it, but am thinking about it after this discussion. You could do multiple strikes say $50 ITM/ATM/$50 0TM, might be a way to improve liquidity, but it would also moderate/reduce returns.
  18. CHGolferJim

Wiki Selling TSLA Options - Be the House

I wrote about it above if you want to search for an earlier post. Initially, I wrote b-w ATM on these shares, which became less and less lucrative as the SP dropped, so I thought to switch classification of these and some lower cost “core” shares. Now I think of the cost basis of these b-w...

I switched into buy-writes after selling all my bonds several years ago. Even at $975/$1075 purchase price, I expect to get a 20% annual return which sure beats bonds and cash. Would like to exit the holdings asap though, and try to figure out a way to stay more liquid.

Have the impression any split will take several months to organize (annual mtg approval, etc.). When do you think it might happen? I am thinking of exiting CC by the early July P&D announcement and watching for awhile for a better indication of what the 2Q P&L suggests for the SP.

Since they went ITM today, at ~3:30pm rolled 6/3 $730 and $755 CC to 6/10 $740 and $765 for a tidy $7 credit. If needed, I’m going to try to roll +1 week +$10 from now on irrespective of the change in SP, hoping for any rises to be less dramatic than this week and that strikes will eventually...

  26. CHGolferJim

Wiki Selling TSLA Options - Be the House

Not advise and stuff you probably know, so just reminders: Generally you will get a slightly better roll at a lower SP, so executing a roll on a dip is logical if you feel it likely the strike will be ITM at expiration. If OTM, the BTC cost will decline with DTE as theta decays. Once ITM, it...

Not sure Kissinger has the guns to handle a verbal battle with Zelensky. While he may be right from a Bismarckian whole Europe perspective, with Ukraine’s current situation and momentum Zelensky would never entertain such trade-offs.

Wiki Selling TSLA Options - Be the House

The challenges are twofold — 1) being willing to let shares assign at a price sometimes well below market in order to do a quick in/out vs. rolling, and 2) rolling exposes one to a downturn below purchase price at which it is easy to become reluctant to let the b-w assign. I have tended towards...

Crazy. After 3 days, closed 80% of these contracts sold Tuesday for $17.10 at $5.80 — hoping something positive happens over the weekend for more selling next week. Normally I roll and take what I can get at the moment, but just in case………

Given the massively mistaken cost and ridership projections made by light rail supporters over the years (most of the projects?), it will be great if the Boring projects have a significantly better track record. I’ve never been to Vegas, but the full build-out numbers are amazing.

  39. CHGolferJim

Wiki Selling TSLA Options - Be the House

As mentioned above, in recent months during the SP spike, I had to roll out out various CC an uncomfortable 4-5 months to rescue the shares from assignment and achieve what then looked like reasonable strike prices for the DTE. In the past month or so, I’ve been rolling down and in as SP has...

It’s a tough decision for me, too. I keep thinking that if and when tech/growth recovers (when interest rates plateau and/or we reach the mid-point of the so-called recession), the ARK portfolios could double faster than TSLA. I think it’s mostly that I’m just fascinated with technological...

Thinking it’s a bad play unless small shareholders are allowed to retain ownership through privatization and IPO. I would guess management would find it inconvenient to have to deal with 10,000 $100k small fry owners, even though that would raise $1B. Presumably Ellison and the institutions...

Dang it, had a pretty juicy order in at market open for 0513-c$975 for a buy-write (at cost), but had the bad thought seeing the pre-market that we could have an MMD and I could do better about 11AM. Price is now 40% of the open. 🥴

73/74 and 40/85 are 2 roads not 4 within 25-30 miles of the Chatham-Siler megasite, and the currently available small roads connecting the site to those interstates would have trouble handling significant semi traffic.

I live in the county just north of Chatham (NC), and travel through it multiple times a month. It seems to me that connecting from there to any interstate would be a nightmare within the next 10 years until the road system is dramatically expanded.

In my experience, covered call roll terms are better when SP is down, but I can’t say that’s true in ALL cases. In general, the amount of credit and/or strike price improvement declines as the price rises. Maybe others will know if it varies whether you’re ITM or OTM.
