Ev charging in the next 1-2 years

Agreed, that is the real problem. It barely drives behavour changes, just increases prices when people use power the most. The vast majority of people literally don't understand how they are billed for electricity. They don't know they are charged by the kWh. The don't know how much a kWh costs...
  2. ShockOnT

Ev charging in the next 1-2 years

This can already be done. You can wire any load to CL2 so long as it is permanently connected (not switchable), and EV charging infrastructure is specifically named as allowable load. The car is downstream and irrelevant, the charger itself is always connected. Note that this means that the...

Ev charging in the next 1-2 years

In these early stages the grid can usually soak up what renewables generate in real-time. As volatile renewables become a bigger and bigger part of the generating mix the storage will become more and more important, but even now generation capacity is a useful metric.
  4. ShockOnT

Ev charging in the next 1-2 years

Amen to that, but I was replying to a guy in Nevada and wanted to give him a familiar point of reference. The point is even more applicable to Australia, our population has grown twice as fast as the US in the past 30 years and the grid has grown to meet the demand.
  5. ShockOnT

Ev charging in the next 1-2 years

The population of the US has gone up 100,000,000 in the past 30 years. The grid coped with that. Humans are good at solving problems, don't worry it's gonna be fine.
  6. ShockOnT

Ev charging in the next 1-2 years

Don't worry about the grid, that's not your problem.

    Tesla Model Y in Australia

There is also usually a pretty health market of Tesla owners swapping their wheels. I've bought and then sold 21s for my S in the past, so some Model Y LR buyers will want to buy your 21s off you.
  8. ShockOnT

    Model S giving much grief

The MCU2 upgrade is like getting a brand new car. I've done it. Completely changes the ownership experience.
  9. ShockOnT

    Supercharger - Horsham (VIC)

Funnily enough I didn't get an email, but also have done the upgrade before. BTW, anyone on the fence, the upgrade is worth it. Opens up all the other fast chargers, was really useful in Tasmania.

I've been waiting years and years for fsd, and still zip, nada. Not even offered a beta test...

It's not an investment, it is a product they are offering, then not delivering within a reasonable timeframe. I'm not expecting to make money on the thing. If I go to a hamburger shop and pay for a hamburger, and there's a sign saying "Our burgers are worth the wait, but they take a while" I...

I've been waiting years and years for fsd, and still zip, nada. Not even offered a beta test...

Only in isolation. If something gets 2X while the competitors get 3X its value will fall, even though it's better. I suspect the value of FSD will fall in the long term. The hardware cost certainly will fall, and once the software is solved by more and more makers, and all FSD platforms become...

I've been waiting years and years for fsd, and still zip, nada. Not even offered a beta test...

That's where we disagree. You think Full Self-Driving is a marketing term describing convenience features. I have always thought it to be a genuine representation that the car will be fully autonomous. We could run a poll if you like. When you paid $10,100 for Tesla's "Full Self-Driving" did...

    Refresh Model X & S Waiting Room - AUSTRALIA

It does look good. My main concerns are how long it will be and how quickly they will ramp production. Also, Tesla might be bad for panel gaps but they make a very good electric drive train. I'd have to guess better than Audi, but just a guess.
  14. ShockOnT

I've been waiting years and years for fsd, and still zip, nada. Not even offered a beta test...

Nissan has been working on autonomous driving for years and were advanced 5 years ago, and "magic" obviously is a marketing term.

    Refresh Model X & S Waiting Room - AUSTRALIA

I waiting for Model S. I would have bought it 6 months ago if available, my current S is 5.5 years old.

I've been waiting years and years for fsd, and still zip, nada. Not even offered a beta test...

In 5 years Nissans might have FSD for $800. If you pay for FSD and 5 years later it's still not working you should get a refund.

I've been waiting years and years for fsd, and still zip, nada. Not even offered a beta test...

I think when you are offered (and pay for) a product called "Full Self Driving", even if there are plenty of caveats about timeframes, there is a reasonable expectation that sometime during your ownership of the vehicle it will be fully self-driving.

A Sydneysider thinking of a holiday in Tasmania

On the other hand, if there are more users there will be more stations, which is convenient for Tesla owners too.

    Tesla Model Y in Australia

I will say that a PR department is less relevant in a social media world, where their voice is just one of millions, and even a press release to mainstream media is seen by very few. Very hard to shift public sentiment, when there are already millions of Tesla evangelists and detractors with...

Not yet. I upgraded to 2021.44.5 yesterday and it happened today.

Tasmanian Fast / Ultra Fast chargers

Just for context, when I joined this forum there were 4 destination chargers and a few wall plugs in Tasmania. I remember well, because I was waiting for my car to arrive and planning a Tassie road trip.
  22. ShockOnT

Model 3 or wait for Model Y and other questions

I disagree. In my experience the poorest people seem to be the most idle, whereas all the rich people I know have worked their asses off since kindergarten, and continue to do so.
  23. ShockOnT

Model 3 or wait for Model Y and other questions

That would imply we have no agency at all. Surely, in addition to the circumstances we find ourselves in, we have some agency to improve our lot, and that improvement is "self-made".

    Supercharger - Kirrawee, NSW

This is such a useful spot. Ironically since I've been everywhere from Tasmania to Brisbane and regional NSW and VIC, the only time I've really sweated was coming back to Sydney from Wollongong one dark and stormy night. Thought it would be a doddle but ended up needing to stop at IKEA...

    Those “cheap tires” review

It's a shame there aren't standardised specifications to allow objective comparison. eg forward/lateral grip in Newtons with a standard weight on some standardised surface in wet and dry. Even road noise could be quantified on standard surfaces. I'm OK with cheap tires if they have the same...

    New owner, styling thoughts?

It's really all about the wheels. Easiest mod to make and has the most impact. Start with taking off the aero caps and it looks more "street" immediately. The caps only add a little range, and that's mostly for high speed driving.
  27. ShockOnT

3 phase or single phase WC supply better?

You're better off with the 32A/3 phase cable. That will let your car do 16A/3 or 32A/1 charging.
  28. ShockOnT

No connectivity for a few minutes after starting car

I wonder if it's unique to Australia? Maybe that's why it's not generating enough pain to get fixed?
  29. ShockOnT

Car manufacturers with worse service than Tesla

Well after defending them they've let me down pretty badly this morning. Cancelled my appointment 5 minutes before, after I'd arranged transport and taken morning off work.

Melbourne to Mt Buller in a M3P with snowboards on roof racks

Charging efficiency is how much power goes into the battery compared to how much power is supplied. Regen braking is a generator, so its inefficiencies are added to any charging inefficiencies. I remember reading about a guy that measured power used going up a long slope then measured power...

Melbourne to Mt Buller in a M3P with snowboards on roof racks

Yeah, I think very complicated, probably not much in it either way.
  32. ShockOnT

Melbourne to Mt Buller in a M3P with snowboards on roof racks

Maybe. 2000kg dropping 1000m has an ideal max potential energy of about 5.4kWh, I suppose about 8% of the average battery. With charging losses you might get 4% back. With a cold battery you might only get 2% back. So if it costs more than 2% you're better off not warming the battery. Kind of...

    New Melbourne delivery centre

@alyuan @Hong Konger Congrats to you both, such fun getting your cars, can't wait to get my next one. The service centres have superchargers but aren't accessible to the public.
  34. ShockOnT

Melbourne to Mt Buller in a M3P with snowboards on roof racks

UMC charger would work if the cord could reach. Other than that, you're probably better off not trying to warm the battery at all, and just accept reduced regen. Whatever gains you make in improved regen probably wouldn't offset the power lost in warming the battery.
  35. ShockOnT

Melbourne to Mt Buller in a M3P with snowboards on roof racks

Another way to warm the battery (if you have time) is to time the charging to finish just before you depart. So leave it at 80% and then start charging before you go to bed at an amperage that gives the right hours charge time before departure.

What does the LR Acceleration Boost cost in Australia?

It probably gets an array of signals returned with two big peaks, one for the primary target and the other from the stationary background (road, poles) with a mist of smaller peaks for non-primary movement (cars off-angle). In software it filters all but the highest peaks, and displays the speed...

What does the LR Acceleration Boost cost in Australia?

I take it this acceleration boost is not on the online ordering page? It's "off menu"? How much does it improve acceleration?

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

No, the MCU2 is lightyears ahead of the MCU1. Absolutely no comparison, it's like a different car. The only negative for the MCU2 is that for about half the people in a recent survey, occasionally it takes a few minutes to connect to the cellular network when starting a drive.
  39. ShockOnT

No connectivity for a few minutes after starting car

Thank you all for participating in the survey. I really thought I was being fobbed off when they told me it was affecting other people, but it seems like it's real. Hopefully a software fix is coming soon.

Sell crashed 2021 Tesla Model 3 SR+ (Sydney) Locked

Maybe the insurance company has paid out but left the owner with the wreck? Probably worth a few grand for the battery.

FSD v9.0 in Australia is just a con isn't it?

Back when I got my car in 2016 there was a certain sense of paying for these fantasy features to support this fledgling, fragile little startup called TSLA. But as for value, FSD is basically nothing more than a donation to the cause. I doubt it will ever have value, because once the FSD problem...

    Autosteer reliability

Autosteer is good for long freeway drives. I've done Melbourne -- Sydney many times with maybe 1 or 2 times needing to take over. It MUST be safer, I'm so much less tired and it's interesting watching the late night swerving by truck drivers having microsleeps...

But if there were more lesser beings clamouring for superchargers they'd build more superchargers so road tripping would be easier.
  49. ShockOnT

    Tesla Opening Superchargers to non-Teslas

More customers, more chargers. That's why they open new superchargers. Doesn't matter what brand the customer is.
