    All discussion of Rivian Automotive

Odd for a cash flow article to appear here. Rivian can certainly go broke, but peak cash flow out occurs as production ramps. Also, the premise of the title of the article is ridiculous. This is basic stuff. https://arstechnica.com/cars/2018/10/how-tesla-proved-cash-flow-critics-wrong/

    All discussion of Rivian Automotive

Of course it does in major manufacturing unless the company isn't covering variable costs. Or it did when I worked at GM. Maybe new math?

    All discussion of Rivian Automotive

How many times has Tesla gone to the capital markets to grow? Rivian has raised money once. Production returns cash even if not profitable. Early in the production ramp the burn rate will always look terrible. I'm more concerned about Rivian's management than the product or current cash burn...

Starting to not like this car

I think that, if you are an early adopter type, Tesla hasn't offered enough change to satisfy. If you can deal with lack of Supercharger there is little reason to keep a valuable MS.

    Elon Musk

How does a manufacturer cut staff while growing 50% YOY? It does seem that with no fuel price relief that every decent EV that can be made can be sold at a high price. So my conclusion is that Musk either thinks China will fall apart or the 4680 isn't scaling as hoped. Recession doesn't matter...
  6. Z

    Elon Musk

What Musk is really saying is that he expects his sales forecast to be far worse than predicted. Could be buyers. Could be parts. No reason to cut staff otherwise. Tesla is currently making a boatload of profit.
  7. Z

    Elon Musk

Tesla and Spacex are manufacturers. Having worked at GM for a bit with the plant manager (10,000 employees) I can't imagine any of that professional staff not being present. I prefer work with only a couple of days a week in the office. But I would not run a manufacturer with that policy. I...

    Elon Musk

I'm apparently the only person that found Elon's 40 hours a week at work message appropriate. Not saying these guidelines or messaging is ideal, but rather that this policy is not unreasonable.

CHADEMO adapter worth it for summer road trip through Canada, USA? (CCS not an option, older 3)

You will want the CCS1 adapter instead of the CHADEMO if it works in your situation. My CCS1 took two weeks from Harumio but current times could be longer.

Super Chargers about to get really busy in the near future

Most of the land owners aren't going to agree to that service. Most of the buyers would simply want a nice coffee or drink, not some Tesla branded thing. Basically you have discovered the food truck. The typical Supercharger doesn't have enough turn over to support that business.
  15. Z

When is structural battery pack & 4680 cells coming & Why are you not waiting until then?

My best guess on the reason for no MPGe improvement is extra structure to support the structural battery pack. If true, that miss is unfortunate but not critical. What is critical is Tesla's ability to make the 4680 at low cost. Labor/cost savings from the large casting is good, but Musk would...

Super Chargers about to get really busy in the near future

Most stations are underutilized and oversized when built.

    No CCS compatibility; legal?

By not caring about their inventory of repair parts. Repairs are inconvenient and often reduce the bottom line.
  18. Z

    No CCS compatibility; legal?

I agree, in the U.S. public money is only going to CCS1 and J1772. Tesla connector is better, but it doesn't matter. The real inconvenience is the short supercharger cord and that Tesla originally chose the wrong location for the charge port.
  19. Z

    No CCS compatibility; legal?

Tesla has become expert at reducing customer trust. They have a large profit margin per car. Yet they deliver cars with defects that are easily discernible. Look at the recent munro inspection of the model Y.
  20. Z

When is structural battery pack & 4680 cells coming & Why are you not waiting until then?

The Austin Y has the same MPGe as the MY LR. The Austin Y has new features, but apparently no benefit from the changes. Preferring the Austin Y is a decision based on hope.

Tesla CCS1 Adapter: Current Draw Above Specs

What's your point? This is obviously the finished Tesla CCS1 adapter. This device and box is what will be sold in the U.S.
  22. Z

    Elon Musk

Did Musk simply deny that sexual harrassment took place? More likely pain and embarrassment has bested Mr. Musk. Perhaps with a touch of hypomania and paranoia. At his base Mr. Musk is not different than everyones familiars.

California Supercharging cost goes up by 20%

Blind trust? Buy the adapter now or buy it later. Once it appears in the Tesla U.S. store it will be gone in minutes. There is no chance Tesla will disable CCS charging except for a safety issue. They haven't even made an effort to disable the SEETEC adapter, which is a kludge.
  24. Z

California Supercharging cost goes up by 20%

Why would Tesla enable CCS1 charging for North America and then disable it when used? The CCS1 adapter sold in S Korea is clearly made for the North American market
  25. Z

    Elon Musk

Well, at least we now know why SpaceX named a droneship Happy Ending.

    CCS Adapter for North America

I sold my CHAdeMO adapter on this site for perhaps reduced profit but also less hassle. Seems that Ebay worked out OK for you, depending upon your tolerance for the dishonest bidders.

Tesla CCS1 Adapter: Current Draw Above Specs

The "korean" version is in a carefully designed Tesla box with english only writing. Tesla didn't make a Korean version. They are selling the North American version in Korea first.
  28. Z

    Elon Musk

Hiring his own lawyers suggests that his current lawyers decline to do what Musk wants. So more crazy may be in the future. Companies hire lawyer to save money. In-house council cuts out the overhead of the law firm. They don't hire lawyers to have a crack team of litigators to fix the CEOs...

    Elon Musk

Is Musk expecting another fraud charge from the SEC? I don't see why he would otherwise be lashing out at democrats. Or is he lashing out because his timing on Twitter was incredibly unfortunate? Changes in status are apparently more individually meaningful than absolute status. For example, ex...

    CCS Adapter for North America

Harumio didn't need my VIN or password. For those a bit hesitant, the adapter from Korea does come in a sealed Tesla box that was made for the English speaking market. There's no doubt it's a Tesla item. My order took nine days. It seems likely the current batch will run out at some point...

    Electrify America general discussion

Which is why Superchargers at grocery stores is Tesla's preference. No one wants to spend 20-30 minutes in a convenience store. Long term replacing gas pumps with fast chargers is not a viable business model unless charging times improve. Meaningful public level 2 is only at motels and work...
  33. Z

    CCS Adapter for North America

SK only is actually a good way for Tesla to not suddenly flood CCS1 stations with cars. Assuming Tesla could get enough adapters made to flood the North American market. Price is rising, so I assume Harumio can not get an unlimited supply

Walk away lock while reaching for the charger

I have this issue in my garage and the long charger cable. I can't get to the charge port before the car locks. Tesla sells the long cable for people who need it, but designed the lock timer to not account for that cable.
  37. Z

Beginning of the end - at least in my mind

Musk won't give up most of that advantage. Tesla wants to increase utilization of seldom used superchargers and potentially be eligible for government funding. Supercharger stations are not generally well suited for CCS1 vehicles to connect. So either you believe Tesla will make a complete mess...

    All discussion of Rivian Automotive

Rivian is acting like a company that expects to raise more capital after opening the Georgia factory. For example, they continue to build out DCFC that will have few users due to limited production. The board members representing the large investors know the financials. Large investors expecting...

    All discussion of Rivian Automotive

Could Tesla even consider opening chargers to CCS1 cars on the west coast? It seems to me that Musk will do enough to seem cooperative but not so much to give away Tesla's advantage. I suspect that most of the federally funded state money will not go to filing gaps but to add chargers in urban...

    Model Y Owners - Preordering a Cybertruck

The Rivian 4 motor can be under $100K in a more basic configuration. So $140K is too high. I don't think Tesla is going to be excited about building inexpensive Cybertrucks, but I doubt the high end goes much over $100K. In hindsight it was ridiculous for Musk to emphasize the low low entry...

    All discussion of Rivian Automotive

SP in 2024 is what matters. Their IPO timing could not have been better. Bezos is the last person looking at short term performance. The concerning issues for me whether they will be chronically short on parts. I see Rivian's investment in private fast chargers as a demand driver. But there...

Superchargers in National Parks (or lack of)

Tesla did some of these locations long ago. Californians couldn't visit the Utah parks in their Model S, so the moab supercharger was born. Unfortunately supercharger placement near western parks assume access from the west.

    All discussion of Rivian Automotive

Cybertruck should pull in some SUV buyers. Plenty of Model S and 3 buyers weren't particularly interested in four door sedan. I think with Cybertruck and Rivian we will see the pickup penetrate the affluent metro market generally for the first time Is the Cybertruck with the cover closed and...

Teslas are being delivered too fast for Supercharger Growth

It takes more planning to build cars than charging stations. It's the CCS1 vehicle builder who are negligent, except Rivian. Tesla has a dozen plus stations opening this year in all large metropolitan areas. Tesla may not feel that they have a problem except in a few areas where they have not...
  47. Z

Superchargers in National Parks (or lack of)

No chargers going on public land will be private or proprietary. That Rivian site above will be private but CCS1. I anticipate Rivian selling subscriptions to non-Rivian owners as a way to use but not overuse the resource. But that arrangement is a guess.

    All discussion of Rivian Automotive

The R1S is a 3 row SUV that most of the affluent world buys. I think the questions ia whether Rivian can sustain demand of 50,000/year combined R1T/S at $100K ASP. So far their products seem well positioned, especially against Tesla.
