2xPowerwall whole house backup - HVAC sure start problem

Has anyone done or know of a cost/benefit analysis of adding a 3rd PW with conventional central A/C vs converting to variable speed compressor A/C or heat pump?
  2. C

Enel X Juicebox Pro 40 not working anymore with Model 3 Performance

FYI, EVSE's (including Tesla ones) can't directly detect excessive heat or voltage drop in the charging handle by themselves. However, for JB, you can determine potential charging handle problems by monitoring the difference in voltages reported by JB and Tesla respectively while charging at a...

MASTER THREAD: Powering house or other things with Model 3

So Ford, Hyundai, Nissan, etc. can do it under warranty but Tesla can't figure it out?
  4. C

Model 3 completely dead this morning. What an experience. [dead 12v]

If the 3A draw is real then even a new 12V battery may not have worked anyway. It's always best to determine the root cause before just changing parts regardless of who pays for the replacement parts.

    Power Conversion System (PCS) failure

Looks like Tesla can take up to 60 days to provide a response under the agreement ...

    Nema 14-50 splitter?

I have the the splitter and it works just fine. However, I don't use it to charge 2 different cars at the same time. The splitter is only used to avoid having to plug/unplug which is inconvenient for NEAM 14-50.

PCS broke for the second time?

Does the car show any errors?

    Powerwall died? DC Stage Fault

Thanks for the clarification. I guess even a third-party installer can only do so much to shield customers from Tesla's support problems. I agree with that conceptually but it seems Tesla could have done more like they did in the EV market with the Model 3. I guess PW is still in the Model S...

Enel X Juicebox Pro 40 not working anymore with Model 3 Performance

It appears the voltage is dropping too much under the 32A load. It could be loose wiring connection in the outlet or in the JuiceBox.
  10. C

    Powerwall died? DC Stage Fault

Sorry, I should have clarified that I was referring to getting PW from Tesla vs other sources. PW definitely has some nice capabilities. It's kind of sobering to see that the PW came out 7 years ago and the market is still in early adopter stage.

    Power strip with capacitor?

Does your TV work on DC power? If not, just adding capacitors alone won't help.
  12. C

    Powerwall died? DC Stage Fault

I can see a third-party installer being better than Tesla but Sunrun? It's great that you have good support experience with them but I have heard too many horror stories about them over the years and it doesn't seem to have changed much...

    Powerwall died? DC Stage Fault

Given your experience, would you recommend PW to family and friend?
  14. C

    Will it fit: Powerwall+

What don't you like about outdoor installation?
  15. C

Not imaging it: more power outages

The main point is that more blackouts related to weather are happening and affecting more people. Your explanation about the causes is valid but I don't see how it would change the main point.
  16. C

Why electric vehicles are a bad investment

True but all kinds of car "enthusiasts" existed before EV. No worse than the batteries in your PW's that have even more expensive batteries. Wow ... what car do you have and how many miles? Very few cars last that long.
  17. C

Best way to connect 17kW of solar PV to one Powerwall?

That sounds like the behavior when PW shuts off due to low SOC.
  18. C

Best way to connect 17kW of solar PV to one Powerwall?

That's too bad. I doubt Tesla would easily accept warranty claim for damaged PW in such setup even if it was done by a certified third-party installer.
  19. C

Best way to connect 17kW of solar PV to one Powerwall?

So, Tesla approves and supports such setup? Most other hybrid inverter vendors have strict criteria on supported max PV capacity that can be AC coupled. I am not aware of another vendor that supports AC coupling ratio of 3:1 (PV capacity:inverter power capacity).
  20. C

Best way to connect 17kW of solar PV to one Powerwall?

Would PW shift frequency in this config even if the battery SOC is low? Also, frequency-watt response takes time. Assuming the extreme situation (battery full, max PV array production, little load), I find it doubtful that one PW can handle the max output from a 16.5kW array for even a short...

Charging off grid ( solar only)

A key difference is that the issue is mostly a nuisance for on-grid systems but critical for off-grid systems where the battery/inverter is typically the only power source.
  22. C

Charging off grid ( solar only)

Zappi doesn't know how to treat an off-grid battery inverter which needs to be charged (i.e. export) at certain times with priority over EV charging unlike the grid.
  23. C

Charging off grid ( solar only)

AFAIK, there is no off the shelf solution for off-grid systems. MyEnergi Zappi is only for on-grid systems. However, OpenEVSE and EmonPi should work with some customization. The charging limit control updates need to be fast enough to avoid the M3 charging shutoff due to instability because...

    Powerwall died? DC Stage Fault

Were you running any unusual loads at the time of PW failure?

Interesting that PG&E is actually working with Chevrolet on V2G (or V2H)

It's not a real issue for V2H (i.e. not V2G) emergency/backup power usage. The whole "beat the TOU" thing seems like a contrivance to help justify the high cost of a dedicated home battery system. In general, it's not so relevant for an EV as it's mainly cost justified based on its value as a...

Tesla Moves To Solve the Problem of Dying 12-Volt Li-Ion Batteries on the LFP Model 3

LFP is an inherently safer chemistry and it's voltage compatible with AGM/lead acid batteries and conventional 12VDC devices including trailer auxiliary power which doesn't work the high li-ion voltage as pointed out in the article.
  27. C

Tesla Moves To Solve the Problem of Dying 12-Volt Li-Ion Batteries on the LFP Model 3

They should have used LFP instead of li-ion for the 12V battery.

Is it possible to charge my Tesla Model 3 from a 4kw generator?

In general, only inverter generators will work consistently. You may also need to bond ground-neutral to get it working with 120Vac generator output. 240Vac would provide better efficiency.
  29. C

    PGE Transfer Switch

GenerLink has been around for years. It's more likely PG&E decided to OEM GenerLink to get around their policy of not allowing non-PG&E owned equipment to touch the grid. Tesla backup switch doesn't have connection for portable generators.

MASTER THREAD: Powering house or other things with Model 3

Sure. Just hook up an inverter to the DC-DC converter under the rear seat. Look at past posts in this thread to see how others have done it.

    My new Juicebox 40 issue

Frankly, cloud dependent access is only real complaint I have about the JuiceBox. Just the past couple weeks it would show offline for up to a day even though the Wifi and Internet connectivity are just fine as confirmed with JuiceBox support. It appears they recently updated cloud server...

Tesla: we need more control over our PowerWalls

Unfortunately, your problem is inherent with cloud dependent access. Not to defend Tesla but this is a more widespread problem in general. Other vendors are implementing similar cloud dependent access and restricting/preventing owners from direct local access to the equipment they paid for and...

Tesla Powerwall + F150 lighting intelligent backup

Fundamentally V2H can't be as integrated as dedicated home battery systems as it's not always connected or enabled. The huge demand for generators shows most people don't mind a few minutes of outage before backup power kicks in for hours long blackouts.
  34. C

Tesla Powerwall + F150 lighting intelligent backup

320A is not required and Ford has corrected their web site. What is required is a 100A circuit. I agree. Tesla has no incentive to work with Ford or Sunrun on this.
  35. C

MASTER THREAD: Powering house or other things with Model 3

If you bypass the VC_FRONT on the model 3 then you may risk damaging the 12V battery over time due to overcharging/mischarging as the system may no longer be able to modulate/control the charging process. The model 3 DC-DC converter can output up to 15V which should not be applied to AGM...

California Utilities Plan All Out War On Solar, Please Read And Help

I have seen similar info for PG&E but they do not include all the true fixed costs. Rather they are rate fees attributed to some of the fixed costs. Again, before getting to rate fees the POCO's should be required to provide full transparency on all true fixed costs.
  37. C

California Utilities Plan All Out War On Solar, Please Read And Help

Given your background, can you explain why POCO's don't just break out the true fixed costs? The lack of transparency just makes it look like they are trying to hide something. I also find it troubling the CPUC has not forced such transparency and former CPUC members going to work at POCO's.
  38. C

California Utilities Plan All Out War On Solar, Please Read And Help

That's kinda what I am concerned about. Vague principles/strategy without real practicality consideration. People's income will likely change over the lifespan of their solar system so will their monthly electric bill follow income? How much more bureaucracy would be required to implement...

Grid outage - PowerWall not allowing solar production

Perhaps you can try turning on a large load to see if if gets PW to shift back to normal frequency.

How to charge at home whenever plugged in, except during peak hours?

Yes, that's how JuiceBox used to workaround the bug. It would charge at 2A to keep the car awake. That was a couple years ago. I am pretty sure the car is asleep since JuiceBox doesn't usually start charging until 2am as I am in the JuicePoint program that dynamically defer charging until the...

How to charge at home whenever plugged in, except during peak hours?

I thought this issue has been fixed by Tesla software updates. I use the JuiceBox Pro and it used to have problem waking up Tesla Model 3 a while back but not since a couple years ago. I like the JuiceBox Pro scheduling better than the car scheduler since it allows different TOU settings for...

Powerwall 2 + UPS Connundrum - and solution

Is there a name for the profile?

Shocked from gutters after Solar Roof activated

I see your meter can measure the AC voltage frequency. Perhaps you can check it and it might provide more clues. It seems odd that RSD would send AC over the DC lines. Is there any DC voltage between the tile and earth?
  45. C

Powerwall 2 + UPS Connundrum - and solution

That's the maximum range for the hardware but the actual range is likely much narrower depending on the grid profile in use for your utility.
  46. C

UPS's not working on battery power

Great example of why you should have a backup generator even with a home battery.
  47. C

UPS's not working on battery power

Powerwall really should not put out 65Hz. But I had been under the impression that 65Hz UPS was a good workaround for the Powerwall frequency issue. Apparently not so much.
  48. C

UPS's not working on battery power

If your UPS accepts 60+/-5Hz then why does it not work with 65Hz from Powerwall? Did you measure the actual frequency?
