    FSD is a fraud

Were any pedestrians hit and/or injured? Or was the inherent caution exhibited by someone with the risk of great financial, legal, and physical risk enough for them to intervene before anyone was hurt? [/MEDIA]

    FSD is a fraud

Whenever anyone critiques ADAS systems in a public forum all other drivers are immediately assumed to have their hands at 10 and 2 with a good night’s sleep, a decade of experience and a clean driving record. The other drivers don’t speed, become emotional, or tinker with their phones. They all...

    FSD is a fraud

I’ve been in the beta program for the better part of a year now and FSD is clearly not going to be a robotaxi at any point in the near future. Either Elon believes his own BS or FSD a scam. I’m inclined to believe the former. Regardless, it’s fun to watch beta develop over time and I bought the...

    Elon: FSD Beta tweets

I mean I’ve been trying it for almost a year and FSD can’t make it down a three mile stretch of a single lane on Figueroa in Los Angeles (with no turns or merges) without requiring a disengagement three or four times. I’ve been doing this exact drive for months. Bupkis. A million robotaxis...

    FSD Beta 10.12

This version is less awful than 10.11 and it’s made a handful of really amazing maneuvers. Still useless of course, but the 85 MPH top speed on the freeway is brilliant.

The Tesla Semi Order Books Are Finally Open

The payback period is probably referring to the purchase price delta between a diesel rig and the Tesla semi.

    Elon & Twitter

I have yet to see any evidence that Elon buying Twitter is anything but a huge distraction with little to no benefit for Tesla, SpaceX, or Boring. What a waste of bandwidth.

    Elon & Twitter

I liked the IONIQ 5 and the Volvo XC60, the former being impossible to find and the latter being a PHEV. I might try the eTron.

    Elon & Twitter

Not that one data point makes any difference but since the origin of Covid when Elon decided he was an epidemiologist through to now where he may be influencing people to stop taking prescription antidepressants I’ve passed through three stages. 1. Tesla evangelist. I’ve “sold” about a dozen of...

    Kia Soul EV

At least in my case LeafSpy and SoulSpy, respectively, showed my Leaf and Soul batteries cooking themselves pretty severely. My Soul battery fan was often going at full tilt to the degree that I could hear it from the driver’s seat, particularly after quick charging. No doubt the Leaf...

    Kia Soul EV

My degradation experience is as follows 2013 Leaf, passive air cooling, 40% lost at 40k miles. 2015 Soul EV, active air cooling, 15% lost at 45k miles. 2018 Model 3, active liquid cooling, 7% lost at 70k miles. Interpret as you wish.
  14. mtndrew1

    Kia Soul EV

These cars had a fan for air cooling the battery pack unlike modern cars with refrigerated liquid cooling systems. My Soul EV had 15% degradation at 45k miles with very careful battery care. I really loved that car aside from the degradation and would happily buy another Hyundai/Kia product.
  15. mtndrew1

    Kia Soul EV

    35+% degradation at 100k km.

Phantom braking so bad I want to return my car

At least on my beta car radar has been disabled and I’m on pure vision. Even with FSD beta turned off my car will not let me use autopilot over 80MPH on the highway not will it let me set follow distance to less than 2. Both of these are consistent with vision only operation.

    Rivian Deliveries Pushed to 2022

What really raises an eyebrow is that the price points weren’t adjusted prior to their major media blast in the Fall and Winter. Inflation was nuts when Rivian won MT truck of the year. Inflation was nuts when TFL Truck drooled all over their review unit in a series of videos. Rinse and repeat...

    Rivian Deliveries Pushed to 2022

This all feels very sketchy to me. Provided Rivian actually needs the extra cash per unit just to break event it would cost, what, $1.5B to make up the difference on existing orders? They just tanked their valuation several multiples of that. They have investors with deep pockets who could...

    Elon Musk

On these points we can agree. If the media can’t give Tesla a fair shake then I wish Musk wouldn’t voluntarily stab it in the back by giving fuel for negativity.
  22. mtndrew1

    Elon Musk

Twitter, autoblog, and so forth all have some permutation of “ELON MUSK -HITLER TWEET…” out today. Whether or not it’s fair or hysteria, that’s what car shoppers are seeing today. It will pass, but what will be the next one? It’s not helping and, if one is impressed by Musk’s accomplishments...

    Elon Musk

It doesn’t help. And adding negative association for the other half of the US, in your example, is a weird way to reach customers.
  24. mtndrew1

    Elon Musk

Whether or not there should, there is. And as a customer it’s getting old.
  25. mtndrew1

    Elon Musk

I don’t ride Jane Fonda to work and don’t park her in my garage. No one sees me at lunch and asks how I feel about Jane Fonda. I truly think it’s important for those who support Tesla to realize that the bulk of customers are just regular car buyers now. These are the same folks who wouldn’t...
  26. mtndrew1

    Elon Musk

At least in my case it’s more an issue of my car being tied to Musk’s public whims than the whims themselves. Everybody has opinions and perspectives and of course some I will disagree with. Nevertheless I don’t want to be involuntarily looped in with Musk’s perspectives in the Costco parking...
  27. mtndrew1

    Elon Musk

And that’s all well and good but if Musk can’t make a nuanced comment to a very tender situation than he should keep his thoughts to himself. Bringing Hitler into the fold is tasteless at best and potentially damaging to the brand.
  28. mtndrew1

    Elon Musk

I’m not boycotting anything and I have no intention of selling my car. Somehow you decided that would make me “feel better” I guess. I remain embarrassed to be associated with Elon Musk and if someone asks what kind of car I drive it inevitably pivots to negative comments about his juvenile...

    Racism lawsuit will go ahead

I’ve been around Tesla long enough to wait for the investigation to play out. I’ll wait for the results from the suit before passing judgement.
  31. mtndrew1

    Racism lawsuit will go ahead

Tesla has become less palatable to me in the recent past for a variety of reasons but if these allegations are true it’s yet another demerit. Car factories everywhere have a long history of this kind of crap but that doesn’t provide any excuse. Ignorance of the problem under the guise of...

I test drove Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL RWD (short review)

If it’s like other Hyundai/Kia EVs there are paddles to dial the regen up and down and after the car is turned off it reverts to its default setting.
  33. mtndrew1

I test drove Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL RWD (short review)

Bummer to hear that the regen level needs to be reset each time you start the car. Otherwise I’m totally in love with the look of the IONIQ 5.

    Politics - Quarantine Thread

Apologies for the hijack since you weren’t asking me, but I think I can add something here. When I’m in a parking lot the reactions to my car that I cringe at are “Elon is such a prick” and the like. On my Chevy nobody ever saw the badge and said “Mary Barra sucks” (I think she does) and my...

    Politics - Quarantine Thread

He’s publicly picking and choosing the hostile regulations he’s embracing and broadcasting it on Twitter as a noble cause. Politics - Quarantine Thread

I’m not sure why, but you’ve managed to pivot my (and others’) growing distaste in Musk’s behavior into an offshoot arguing about business retention and wealth inequality in California. The OP is from England. I can simultaneously be concerned about business overregulation in my state while...

    Politics - Quarantine Thread

It seems that you have decided to paint those of us who are experiencing a growing distaste of Musk with a pretty broad brush. I also have a lifted F-150 4x4 (no truck nuts however) and a supersport motorcycle. I am a political moderate. I might argue that losing me as a customer is...

    Politics - Quarantine Thread

I’m old enough to remember CARB’s EV mandates and use of California taxpayers’ money for EV rebates being referred to in similar language. Hyper liberal San Francisco pipe dreams wasting taxpayer money on technology that would never come to fruition. I also remember similar whinging when...

    Politics - Quarantine Thread

Clearly this thread will be devolving into political bickering in short order. I’d just like to point out that one can simultaneously be disgusted with Newsom’s and Musk’s behavior. I am. And regardless of Musk’s intent or moral compass this is the first time in six years of being associated...

    Politics - Quarantine Thread

At least for me I know this is irrational so it’s been odd to experience this sudden reversal of my emotional attachment to the brand. I know the auto industry is a messy, ugly place (I’ve worked for a major automaker) but maybe I had held musk and Tesla in high regard and now it’s becoming...

    Politics - Quarantine Thread

I am of similar mind. Elon’s recent praise of what appears to be some very unsavory characters has really tainted my view of him and, by association, Tesla. Like you I dismissed his behavior in the past but for me the tide turned when he stomped his feet like a brat over covid in 2020, having...

how much mileage do you lose if you remove the aero wheel cover?

I had the aero wheels when I first bought the car and I would just put the caps on for road trips. The rest of the time I couldn’t stand to look at them. The refresh cars’ caps look a bit better though.

ioniq 5? too bad its a hyundai.

Why is it bad that it’s a Hyundai? We have a Hyundai in the garage and it’s exceptionally well built and a joy to drive. I think the IONIQ 5 should be a huge success.

Wiki MASTER THREAD: Actual FSD Beta downloads and experiences

While I would like that, the route takes nearly two hours through miserable LA rush hour traffic. I just don’t have enough time on my hands to do it more frequently than once per release. In any event, it’s becoming more capable on my drives. LOTS of improvements needed but it’s improving.

Wiki MASTER THREAD: Actual FSD Beta downloads and experiences

I don’t believe many/any of the improvements are due to me becoming more comfortable. My route is extremely challenging and disengagements are solely to prevent the risk of collisions. I also track interventions (applying accelerator, manually going around obstacles) and they increased...

Wiki MASTER THREAD: Actual FSD Beta downloads and experiences

10.6.1 was another step forward for my use case. My test route, which is very challenging, had a 25% reduction in disengagements over 10.5. It’s getting there. Lots of work to go but it’s getting there. Bring on 10.7!
