Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

I don’t see how the Austin ramp is anything but a failure at this stage. They were supposed to have gone into production in Q1 and if they had followed the Shanghai ramp they would already be cranking out over 1000 cars a month at this point.

Any other owners second guess if their next car should be another Tesla?

The problem with any other automaker including VW is their battery tech and battery management system is not as sophisticated as Teslas. I have zero expectation that other brands will be able to maintain 80% original range a decade and hundreds of thousands of miles into the life of the pack.

    model Y paint doesn’t match

I had an Audi A4 that was dolphin gray and had the same issue. This is called paint flop Which affects how the paint looks at different viewing angles. The paint color itself is probably the same but it might not have been applied properly or had the correct base coat applied.

Paint flaws in new model Y

There’s value in having a car continue looking good years after the delivery… especially considering what these cost. Would I wrap it for $6K? Hell no I wouldn’t. I did do about $850 of PPF on my 2018 and have ceramic coated it twice. It looks fairly good but still some rock chips, etc.

Sentry mode false flashes whole night

The only other thing I can think to do is look at the recordings and see if you can determine what is tripping the sentry. If you can't see anything in the recordings report it to service.

Sentry mode false flashes whole night

How do you know there is no movement in the garage? Do you have a security cam in the garage you can line up with the time stamps for when the sentry is alerting? Does sentry alert when parked in other places? If it’s your own personal garage why do you feel you even need sentry enabled?

Has anyone with the old windshield washer system changed to the new one?

You can do this but it's not a very good idea. If for any reason the car ends up in freezing conditions you will be potentially replacing multiple parts. Also, when you sell the car eventually will you drain/purge the system in the event the car ends up in one of the 2/3 part of the country...

Has anyone with the old windshield washer system changed to the new one?

While my time is valuable I can wash my car with a foam lance, dry it with the finest of microfiber towels and do the wheels, all in about 40 minutes. 40 minutes of effort is definitely worth it to not pay some schmuck $60 (and I assume a tip on top of that) to do the same thing.

Who the heck pays $60 to have someone wash their car? Yeesh.

Has anyone with the old windshield washer system changed to the new one?

You know you can use any wash fluid you want, right? BMW factory fluid has an extremely strong smell and is completely clear.

Model Y bumpy ride "Rear Spring replacement"

There is another explanation which is that the quality of roads where you are is not representative of the quality of roads in other parts of the country where people might have a higher degree of dissatisfaction with Tesla's approach. In places where people get winter weather there is...

Model Y bumpy ride "Rear Spring replacement"

This take is absurd. Reviewers who have been critical of the Model Y suspension have made very specific critiques and compared it directly to the German competition. Tesla could offer a magnetic or air ride suspension that would resolve a lot of the critiques of the suspension, and even make a...

Model Y bumpy ride "Rear Spring replacement"

I wonder if this is a general revision change or if they just swapped the parts with the same ones. There have been two versions of springs for quite some time, the A rev and the B rev which I believe is the lower/harder spring for the MYP. C revision description says nothing about being...

Getting increasingly less miles per charge

Anyone who asks me about my Tesla and starts getting into hypothetical range issues I almost always tell them it's not the car for them. It's not the car for you if you do a lot of range driving especially off the beaten path. If like most people you usually do moderate length drives and do the...

Getting increasingly less miles per charge

If you drive in a spirited fashion then a gas burning car won't get the EPA rated range either, it's just a bit quicker to fill it up. My 340i had something like 20 city 29 highway but that also assumes you don't run the air conditioner and for highway you drive something like 55-60 mph. My...
  18. voip-ninja

Getting increasingly less miles per charge

AC/heat usage has absolutely nothing to do with estimated range. Estimated range is based solely on how much energy the car thinks the battery has available and the EPA estimated range per Kw/h.

Window exploded while parked for Level 2 charging

It looks like rear windows were aftermarket tinted? Window tint can in rare cases cause failures like this. The sentry cam is not going to capture something like this because it does not do continuous looped recording the way a dash cam does. Forking over $300 to fix it in the grand scheme of...

Underside View on New Vehicle Pickup

    Model Y Headrest Defect (warping)

If he drives with his head against the headrest then it's possible that the deformation is being caused by his head rubbing against the headrest hard enough that it is eventually causing the material to deform. Theoretically this would be worse with skin to seat contact than hair to seat contact.

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

My possibly wrong understanding is that if a cell fails in a 2170 car that individual battery module can be swapped out, whereas the expectation with the 4680 cars is that if there is a failure the entire battery will have to be swapped. Since the battery is part of the car's structure this will...

Assuming Tesla has 50K employees in the US that assumes one in five of them will be purchasing a $60,000 car (median Tesla salary is $110,000 and many of those employees are in CA where federal and state taxes eat nearly 1/2 of their income). That's not going to happen. Many already own a...

Some of the issues are easy fixes and others are not. Tesla insisted that to fix some of the issues with my car it would have to go to a body shop so I just fixed them myself. Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Ah, now we get to the insults, nice. I don't know how they are hanging the doors, do you? It might be done by a human, it might be done by a robot, or it might be done by both. In any event, I haven't seen any indication that tolerances at the Austin plant are better than the ones out of...

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

I'll post if I want to post. Maybe what was actually under discussion was how doors are hanging wrong on Austin built cars exactly the way they hang wrong on Fremont built cars and he opined on casting vs. stamped cars which should have nothing to do with this issue.

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

It comes down to whether it's an issue of a new line getting the hang of things or whether it's that the same people/processes are in place that cause sloppy assembly in Fremont. One of the reasons proposed for Fremont assembly quality lacking is that it is an ancient factory and that the Tesla...

There are plenty of people that will shift their reservation over if it means they will get their car in 3-6 months instead of the 6-9 or even longer that it currently takes in many configurations. The cost savings won't even necessarily factor into it much. Some people just can't wait half a...

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

The explanation that makes the most sense is that they are constrained by 4680 cell production. If they can sell 100 SR cars compared to 80 LR cars and they have enough parts and demand to sell the 100 shorter range cars it makes sense. Eventually when 4680 cell production increases they might...

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Yes, they've already said they are only doing 4680 with the structural battery at Austin. If the cell production is constrained then a lower range car with far fewer cells let's them fill more orders in the short term. Perhaps as 4680 issues with yield, performance, etc., get resolved they will...
