Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Steven Loveday has been writing articles about "Green" vehicles for at least 10 years. Long before InsideEVs (IEVs), he was writing for "Autoblog Green". His content was crap back then and it's crap now. I have no idea how he stays employed. (Edit - I see that somehow he's Editor in Chief and...

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

I've been staring at those charts and read all the BU articles, but still couldn't see where 10-80% is better than 0-70%... Part of the difficulty is that a lot of these charts count "cycles" in different ways. What you really want to know is capacity retention after the same amount of...

    Supercharger - Santa Ysabel, CA (LIVE 29 Mar 2021, 8 V3 stalls)

Stopped by Sunday mid-afternoon to check it out and stop for a bathroom break and snack from Don's Market. I didn't need to charge, but there was a 1-2 Teslas there charging there. One spot ICEd by a minivan. The restaurant and pie shop were closed for Easter, I know this lot can get fairly...

How I Recovered Half of my Battery's Lost Capacity

Do you know if Tesla unlocked the capacity at the top or bottom of the SOC, or simply reduced the buffer at the bottom? In other words, did they raise or lower the max/min allowable voltage of the cells, or did they simply reduce the amount of hidden range below 0?

    Supercharger - Salinas, CA (LIVE 14 Oct 2017, 14 V2 stalls)

Tesla probably knows already (they have automated monitoring of their systems) and probably already have alerts for the issue. But if you want to post somewhere about it, here as well as Plugshare are your best bets, Tesla has been known to monitor social media.

    Supercharger - Santa Ysabel, CA (LIVE 29 Mar 2021, 8 V3 stalls)

Tesla's Find Us shows it as active on the page. Doesn't show up in the car yet. I may be able to check it out next week.

    edmunds range ratings

Yeah, range remaining below 0 is somewhat interesting, but doesn't explain the discrepancy between Tesla vehicles. That said, it's well known that the range estimates near empty are not necessarily very accurate and also can fluctuate. If their standard range test has them stopping at an...

    edmunds range ratings

What's up with the poor tested range of the 2018 Model 3 Performance (256 mi) compared to the 2020 Model Y Performance (263 mi) and the 2021 Model 3 AWD (345 mi)? Something seems very wrong there. If they are using a single data point, that could lead to large discrepancies - IMO at the very...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

After BRK announced that they bought heavily into Chevron, I started divesting myself from BRK and into other funds like ARKK and similar. So glad I did. Financially, the timing was not good, but hindsight is 20-20 and long term I am confident that BRK is yesterday's news and ARKK will...

    Coronavirus

Yes, it's just about impossible to get an appointment right now unless you're lucky. Need quite a bit more supply before opening up eligibility. I still think lowering the BMI eligibility to > 25 was a mistake, I think they should have opened it up to everyone over 50 years first, then to all...

How I Recovered Half of my Battery's Lost Capacity

Yes - for that reason, I do wish that Tesla had the option of reducing Supercharger speed to somewhere between 70-90% of peak allowable charging speeds to minimize Supercharger induced capacity loss. This would be an across the-board reduction in speed of what is allowable at that...

    No supercharging in Bakersfield CA?

    1. A Better Routeplanner is your friend. Bakersfield is an easy trip from Orange county, just stop for a bit in each direction in Tejon Ranch. 2. Tesla has a Supercharger for Bakersfield in the works - ETA Q3 2021. See attached screenshots.

On mobile there's options to view watched content and threads in the drop down menu, but they're a pain to get to because they're so far down the menu. Also, those options don't let you hide read topics.

    Coronavirus

Yeah, I agree. While the Overweight BMI category seems suspect to me to open up (Obese I have no issue with), it sure does seem like an easier approach would be to simply go by age. To target certain areas / demographics with low vaccination rates, another easy method would be to lower the age...

Tesla Energy and utility scale projects

How do 4680 cells represent a massive increase in production capacity? Either way, you have to build more production capacity, it could be done with 18650s or 2170s or prismatic cells. 4680s give you incremental reductions in cost to manufacture and have to be combined with tabless cell...

Heat Pump vs. Geothermal Heat Pump

One aspect of comfort that is often overlooked with VFD is noise. I bought a Trane XL20i 3-ton heat pump hybrid system (gas backup) about 11 years ago, thinking I bought the quietest system on the market, with it being the top of the line model with two stage heat pump. I find the outdoor...

Wall of 10 Tesla Powerwall 2 units

Nice, sounds like you have done a lot to minimize your energy use, which isn't easy in an all-electric house in the winter in Wyoming. On the topic of efficiency upgrades, have you considered or have you had blower door test to look for air leaks in your house? My research in the area has shown...

Thank you! I missed that checkbox, and it does appear that now while I don't have quite the same control as before (the ability to view unread watched threads independently from unread watched forums), for my purposes this is fine. Hank, you do get the ability to show all unread posts in...

View Threads with Unread Posts after Upgrade?

OK, I noticed something new - when you click on "New Posts", there are filters, and there's a "Show only: Unread" filter selected by default. So that is good and configurable filters are nice there. And I see that you can add a filter so that you can filter new posts for both unread and...

    Coronavirus

Like I said - anecdotally, I have heard of an instance where workers at a vaccination site in Texas who were not able to find enough volunteers to be vaccinated at the end of the day when they had left-over vaccines, despite an abundance of people around who were not yet vaccinated. One example...

    Coronavirus

Honestly, I'm not sure how much that will help. Based on surveys I've seen (I thought it was this one at Civiqs, but it doesn't have a state-by-state breakdown), right-leaning states have a significant portion of their population that simply aren't willing to get vaccinated. In some...

Supercharger stopped charging before set limit, then got charged idle fees?

I've seen a pattern of this with the Model S/X reported here in various threads - it does not seem to be uncommon for the car to refuse to charge to 100%. When this happens, one or more modules has hit maximum voltage and thus can not be charged any more, but there is also one or more modules...

    New 85kWH battery for my 2013 P85+

Could be leaking into the rear motor, which isn't uncommon. @ajbessinger has been posting the diagnosis and repair process when feasible. Though I'm not sure if it can leak enough to really be possible. I imagine that if coolant was leaking into the battery pack, things would go wrong quite quickly.

Hmm, got a LX a few weeks ago, haven't used it much, but tried it last night after some of these reports and it had indeed locked up and wouldn't connect. Had to unplug/plug it back in. Very interesting website. For the < 50 years old crowd, it's 30% hard-no. Other significant factors that trend towards higher vaccination rates (looking at the will I get vaccinated answers other than "No"): Education level: ~9/10 postgrads will get vaccinated compared to ~7/10 non-college...

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

Module imbalance is a little bit high at 9 mV, but not unusual. At 4.16 V maximum I'm guessing you still have more time to go before the BMS has fully trusts it's readings.

    Coronavirus

Also very interesting quote from the article: Strikingly, 73 (61%) of the seroconverters reported no COVID-19 related symptoms (including loss of smell, loss of taste, cough, fever, and chills). That really drives home the need to practice social distancing and COVID countermeasures at all...

    Coronavirus

Two somewhat unrelated posts above, but both also point to a fact that is directly correlated to COVID case rates (and eventually death rates): Just because a govt imposes "hard-core lockdown", does not mean that all people are abiding by those rules, or that the rules are being enforced. A good...

Maybe not most of TX because of the ERCOT island, but other states between CA and TX are also short on electricity right now because of the cold. Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

I am making some assumptions here based on wk057's posted information on Condition Z: I am assuming that the BMS is relying less on the direct module level voltage readings and more on indirect module level voltage readings obtained by reading voltages across all other modules simultaneously -...

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

That's exactly what it's doing after the update according to wk057. Post update it allows lower voltages when discharging, but temporarily prevents higher voltages. After enough cycles/miles, it allows nearly all of the higher voltage range again.
  38. D

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

Yes - ultimately if you lose 10% or ~25 miles off the top after the update, you've already lost 10% or ~25 miles off the bottom, but you just won't know it until you try to use it and your car shuts off with 25 miles shown on the dash. As wk057 has stated, you're better off updating and getting...

Just finished my first "road trip" and I am not happy with range

400 Wh/mi is pretty high and explains the range you saw. A 13 mph wind can also do a number on efficiency, too. If your range and conditions were similar in both directions, it was probably a cross-wind and cross-winds can be worse than a head wind in terms of efficiency as it increases your...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Hah, nice one. :-) Seriously though, it does show that Tesla can build cars to tight tolerances, but there are too many cases of them building cars to wide tolerances. Right now while they have more demand than supply, it's not a big deal. But at some point in the future, their factories will...

Best Battery Usage Strategy for a low mileage user.

This is false. 4.2 V is widely recognized as 100% SOC and as already mentioned, what Tesla charges the cells up to when you select 100%. 90% around 4.1V and even 80% is around 4.06-4.07 V. 0% appears to be right around 3.0 V. 3.0 to 4.2 V is a very standard 0% to 100% SOC range. I would argue...

    Coronavirus

FWIW - even in hospitals, while there is 100% mask compliance, most are just wearing surgical masks and very few wearing face shields on top of that. Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

Yep - usable energy is dictated by the module with the lowest remaining energy in it - generally the module with the lowest voltage, unless that module has less capacity than others. @random155 - what are your charging habits for your car? The imbalance does seem fairly high, unless you don't...

Trying to reuse the existing wiring for HPWC. A sanity check for me, please?

Yeah, this is a problem. The alternative is to find the Gen 2 Wall Connectors (you can find them on E-Bay or on the For-Sale Forums here for ~$500 if you look around) and run a twisted pair cable between the two (make sure the cable is rated properly) for power sharing. Then you can avoid the...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

The GA EV tax is a flat tax and because you drive far more miles than the typical driver it works out for you. EV taxes in general as they've been implemented are a poor replacement for the gas tax, because it is a flat tax instead of at least somewhat based on how many miles you drive as a...
