    BMW using a brushed motor

Having owned several BMWs... I would be very wary of any claims of components lasting the life of the car. They tend to be very optimistic there.

20 or 30 amp breaker for tesla wall charger

Though if that's a major concern, one can always opt for a 6-50, which tends to be more readily in stock at Tesla and has otherwise the same charging capability.

    Politics - Quarantine Thread

I think he was using the term virus metaphorically, not referring to covid (which can range from anywhere to asymptomatic to resulting in severe ards and death — that end of the spectrum being much more common than with other “mild respiratory viruses”) Right wing virus from my observations...

    Politics - Quarantine Thread

There's a pretty decent chunk of us who like Tesla overall but feel Elon is amongst the worst humanity has to offer.

Wouldn't be all that surprising if Elon is one of those subscribers.

    Model Year 2022 Refresh M3/MY

Yep, that's the primary cause. Try driving your M3P with the seats folded down.

    Toolbox 3

I recall reading of someone trying to add CCS to their model X, but the consumer facing version of toolbox 3 didn't allow for gateway changes

Head lights not coming on when wipers are on

Forget 5 years, my 20 year old BMW turns on the headlights with wipers.

Why choose Model 3 over Model Y if you can have more trunk space?

That height is wrong. 58" on Polestar's website https://www.polestar.com/us/polestar-2/exterior/measures/

Why choose Model 3 over Model Y if you can have more trunk space?

The 2022 model my dad briefly owned (he’s since sold it for a profit and took delivery of an X) still had very choppy suspension. Wind noise seemed comparable to my 3.

Why choose Model 3 over Model Y if you can have more trunk space?

Have you actually driven the two? Model 3 is just overall a better car to actually drive. Smoother, quieter, better handling. I also find the new door panels make the 3 feel slightly more premium inside. If you need storage and passenger space, the Y is the way to go I suppose... though I...

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

Thermal breakers don't necessarily need active electronics.

    M3P VS BMW I4 M50

Took out my E46 M3 for the first time in a few months since buying my model 3 p. Still very much an enjoyable car in a very different way from the model 3. Even after getting used to an EV, there's something about a cammed and airbox'd E46 M3 screaming away at >8000 RPM

2022.20 Enables Green Light Chime Without EAP/FSD!

Anyone else find this feature to be overhyped / pretty pointless? I almost always see the light and start moving before the ding happens.

Elon gives me Cat Quest but no Energy app?

They got rid of it in 2020.20.x
  18. T

    Karpathy leaves - what's next for AP/FSD?

Let's be real, if there's anyone who can't embrace pragmatism and barks up one tree despite everyone else pushing for the contrary, it's Elon.

US Tesla charge port retrofit to CCS2?

I think going off book a little and wiring it as single phase would be easy enough. If you want 3 phase charging, that'd probably require some extra work.

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

272 wh/mi on a MYP seems pretty low. On my M3P I'm averaging about 320 wh/mi. Sure I don't exactly drive slow.. but I also didn't buy a performance model to drive slow.

Master Thread: Definitive 14-50 NEMA Outlet Guide

MC cable kinda gets you the best of both worlds. Not sure why it isn't more popular.
  22. T

    Mobile connector or wall connector

Big question is what wiring is used. If the wiring is 8 AWG or better, he's perfectly fine having a 14-50 outlet (though 8 AWG romex would have to be labeled for 40A).

Why Elon Musk refuses to put the 4680 battery in Model S and X

None of that makes it wrong to want it, unless you’re a tsla investor.
  24. T

    2022.16.3 released

That was there with 2020.16.2 at least
  25. T

Model S and X to get 4680 batteries. I told my wife my Plaid won't be my last car and this is one of those reasons.

Your point? 2170 and the 18650s in the refresh can do the same.
  26. T

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Yeah that SoC vs time curve is pretty close to the 2170 cars As far as acceleration apparently not being limited at low SoC, I suspect that’s because the acceleration is already gimped on the MYAWD with the 0-60 being slower than the LR despite having the same motors.
  27. T

Model S and X to get 4680 batteries. I told my wife my Plaid won't be my last car and this is one of those reasons.

So far the 4680s have not proven to offer any advantage over the 18650 or 2170 cells.

30 amp circuit getting warm during 24 amp charging - any concerns?

What really matters is the temperature at the contacts, but 120F is probably fine regardless.

    2022.20

So non-FSD cars get the green light chime now? Is this the first instance of Tesla moving an EAP or FSD feature into the free tier?
  30. T

Why Elon Musk refuses to put the 4680 battery in Model S and X

No where near as much as EVs do. The biggest consumer of energy in winter is heat, and that's free in ICE cars On the flip side, if winter range is what you're concerned about, the heat pump in the refresh should have a bigger impact than the 20 mile range loss.
  31. T

Seriously. What is your max amount you'd pay for EAP?

It's not impossible actually. They opened a bunch of new factories. Demand is likely going to crater as inflation and interest rates continue to climb. Competition is also getting stronger. Their stock value is like half of what it was not too long ago too. They're also laying off workers left...

    M3P VS BMW I4 M50

Well both cars are open diff as far as I'm aware, have relatively similar rear suspension designs, so it'll probably come down to whoever has the better traction/stability control system. The wider tires may help overcome some of the open diff deficiencies.
  33. T

    Model Year 2022 Refresh M3/MY

Part numbers are still different between LR and P. It does not appear appreciably lower than an LR to me, but I've also parked next to early M3Ps and the height looks the same there. I think Tesla's claims of 10mm was always overly optimistic, and suspect the wording and picture change on the...

Those look like the non-matrix lights to me?
  35. T

    M3P VS BMW I4 M50

I suspect the i4 M50 will hold traction in corners a bit better simply by virtue of having wider tires, but it's hard to say for sure. What's clear either way is that despite the label, the i4 M50 isn't really an M car. A proper electric M3/4 might be enough to make me go back to BMW, but who...

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

The instruction set being the same between MCU2 and 3 does not mean they have the same architectures. The atom and zen architectures are wildly different despite being able to execute the same code on a broad level. In any case, instruction set is hardly relevant to programmers these days, the...

    Model Year 2022 Refresh M3/MY

Panasonic 82kWh as far as I'm aware.
  38. T

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Did he measure both an SR AWD and LR on the same scale? Edit: Just found the video. So he's claiming after subtracting his weight and cargo, his Model Y measures at 4220 lbs. And he cites 4555 lbs as the MYLR weight. But on Tesla's website, the weight for the MYLR is listed as 4363 lbs or 4398...

    Model 3 Performance...Plaid [speculation]

As far as I’m aware, M3Ps do reasonably well in track scenarios, which is going to generally be harder on the car than just a high speed run. They wouldn’t necessarily have to allow more current. Just allow it to hold that max current for longer. The M3Ps abroad with LG batteries actually have...

    Model 3 Performance...Plaid [speculation]

If there’s one thing consistent with Elon, his word is meaningless. If he decides Tesla is being left behind in this segment, they’ll probably do some sort of update. My suspicion is they will eventually release some variant that has *one* of the plaid motors in the back. It would require...

    Model 3 Performance...Plaid [speculation]

I agree. I would love a model 3 plaid. Or a proper M EV (the i4 doesn't really qualify). The power drop at higher speeds is my biggest complaint coming from an ICE vehicle
  42. T

    Model 3 Performance...Plaid [speculation]

Combo of Tesla using rather aggressive gear ratios to bring the 0-60 down and the power diving of a cliff at higher RPMs. The i4 can hold onto its peak power to a bit over 200 km/h, while the M3P starts to lose power from 100km/h or so. I think the M3P is overall a better car, but in this...

That's wishful thinking at best. Tesla has no reason to do that.

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

Seems like there's a fair amount in stock in Europe. Not sure what the best way to order from there would be, but in a large enough quantity I imagine the shipping premium wouldn't be too prohibitive. Alternatively would this work? Seems to mate to the same parts 1376103-1 : AMP TH/.025...

Going to order a new Model 3 performance. Should I consider the long range AWD?

The suspension isn't really any lower. Wheels are take it or leave it, but it's pretty easy to just install 19s on a performance
  46. T

Going to order a new Model 3 performance. Should I consider the long range AWD?

Are there any similar charts for the hairpin motor M3Ps? That CarWow car might be new enough to be one of those, though I always assumed the hairpin should be faster. Edit: Now that I think of it, don't some of the Chinese built cars come with LG 79kW batteries instead of the Panasonic 82kW...
  47. T

Going to order a new Model 3 performance. Should I consider the long range AWD?

They used to have the same 980 / 3D1 motor, now the LRs have the 990 / 3D5. Supposedly the only difference between the two is the inverter having more MOSFETs or something.
  48. T

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

Does make you wonder why they bother showing whether or not CCS support is enabled. They could easily hide that information based on region. I suspect the initial plans were to launch the CCS adapter and official retrofits around the time V11 rolled around, but something (probably supply chain)...
