How many times has your car been in service?

2014 Model S on 60 k miles which my wife has owned for 18 ish months. 4 or 5 service visits. CCS upgrade, MCU failure, mapping system failure, door handle failure (twice as they didn’t do a very good job first time) and a couple of other minor issues that slip my mind at this moment in time...

Service center damage, how to address?

Write them a letter saying that you are giving them this one opportunity to fix it, but if the car has ANY faults (so much as a dirty hand print) on it, you want to reject the car as you are legally entitled to. Hopefully this will concentrate their minds to do a good job. It doesn’t mean that...

2 week old MY, Multiple Errors whilst driving - All assist functions disabled

Because the ABS works by comparing all four wheel speeds. If one wheel speed is missing the system goes into fault mode and shuts down. Quite a few other systems in the car rely on the wheel speed output from the ABS unit, so if that is in fault mode, they shut down as well. Exactly the same...

Brake Disks Look Good After Sitting 2 Weeks

I have recently changed our disks due to corrosion. They looked fine from the outside but the MOT man invited me under the car to look at them from the inside. They were horrific. I have never changed discs due to corrosion before, arguing that they will sort themselves out with use, but...

    Tesla in-car navigation and efficency.

Waze appears to be much better than Tesla for live traffic info and also for camera (and other) warnings. Waze cannot plan supercharger stops. Normally when I drive I am not in a Tesla and I use Waze. However, when I do a long trip I tend to borrow my wife’s Tesla and use the car nav as it...

My mate's car coming soon, which wall charger should he buy?

...but not for family members. I worry about the kids driving an under powered valueless 20 year old hatchback. I don't want them getting ideas about the Tesla! On our car (2014 Model S) the only ways of opening the charge port are the phone, the Fob, from in the car itself, or with a Tesla...

My mate's car coming soon, which wall charger should he buy?

Just had another thought on the Zappi / powerwall priority issue. If you have want to charge both, you can always let the Zappi have priority and then limit the charge rate on the car, so anything above that goes into the powerwall. It seems like a faff to me, but if you wanted to it would be...

    Phantom drain not happening

Our 2014 car still loses 1 to 2 % over night every night. No sentry mode. No Tesla Fi and not checking it / waking it up with the app. I suspect it is not going to sleep properly (or at all) but as it isn't an issue for a car which is used most days and gets fully charged by surplus PV most...

My mate's car coming soon, which wall charger should he buy?

How the Zappi works depends on how it is set up. Ours will charge the car first and then when the car is either full or goes off for a drive, the powerwall gets its turn to charge. If for some reason I want the powerwall to take priority I just turn the Zappi off using the app. For my needs...

Driving Your Tesla in the Snow

I have just stumbled across this while searching for TPMS info. For what it is worth, living in the South of the UK, I fitted our winter tyres last weekend (in January). I didn't fit them in the autumn as it was just too mild. They will stay on until it gets mild again whether that is two...

Creep mode, Am I the wrong one?

Some Tesla's may have auto brake scrubbing, but do all of them? On our 2014 Model S I am about to change all the discs and pads, not because they are worn, but because of horrendous corrosion on the inside of all the discs. Will definitely do a bit manual braking occasionally once I have got...

Real world range in layman's terms

Our model S has an 85 kw battery. Tesla say that it will do around 300 miles. In the real world, 200 is realistic. I am not sure on the battery size of a SR model 3, but keep in mind that the 3 is lighter / smaller than the S so should be more efficient. Anyway, two thirds of what Tesla claim...

What is classed as a modification

All of the above. I am an independent surveyor (ships not cars) and go look at the mess after a claim and the tell the underwriters how it is. I don't make the "pay or not pay" decision but I do give the underwriters all the facts to make that call. On a personal note, having had a lot of...

    Nav Needs update

When I go to the App and click on upgrades, it says my car has everything available. I will talk to them about it tomorrow, but it won't be this month in any event.

    Nav Needs update

Just checked their e-mail. The eMMC is being replaced and upgraded from 8GB to 64 GB under the recall. I am paying for supply / purchase of a new sim card. I assume that isn't the MCU2 upgrade then? I will talk to them tomorrow about it, but it won't be this month for cash flow reasons. It...

Update for anyone interested. Now booked into Tesla for tomorrow for a new sim card at £200 Will also get the MCU changed under the recall at the same time.

    Nav Needs update

No, not sure at all. I had assumed, possibly incorrectly, that as this was the first time that it had downloaded anything for months, and that it was first thing in the morning, when I had booked a service the evening before, it was somehow related. Cannot give you the nav version at present as...

    Nav Needs update

So, this morning it started downloading just after I woke up. As soon as it finished downloading we pressed install and about an hour later it appeared to have installed properly. However, still the same error message and no nav. I have an appointment at the "local" (50 miles / 80 kms away)...

Thanks. Will try that now. It is parked by the house and the router is just inside the front door, so I cannot see how I could make it any stronger.

    How to update navigation data?

Did this get resolved? I have exactly the same problem.
  24. B

    Nav Needs update

We cannot use the Nav system at present. It says "Navigation data needs updating. Please connect car to Wifi". The thing is, the car is connected to wifi. I even went to the settings and re-entered the password. There is a little green tick next to our wifi name, so it looks like it is...

    Tyres for best grip?

Ooh, that is food for thought. The winter tyres are on 20 inch wheels, but the tyres are nearly new so don't really want to be selling them. While it is tempting to buy new wheels, that does put the budget up loads, so I would probably rather stick with the 19 inch wheels and put the best tyres...

    Tyres for best grip?

Hi All, We have a 2014 Model S and need some new tyres. We currently have 245/45 - 19 size, although I am not ruling out a slight size change if there is a good reason to do so. We really want to fit the tyres with best grip. The car only does a small mileage and few long trips, so not worried...

Any way to keep Powerwalls from charging without turning off their breakers?

I have read this thread from start to finish, as I would also like to stop powerwall charging, but for different reasons. We haven't actually got a powerwall yet, but do have one on order. We are on a tariff where we get very little for any solar we export, so my objective is always to export as...

    Powerwall control

Thank you everyone, you have put my mind at rest. What is the minimum excess solar generation required before the power wall will start charging? Did I read above that it is 2 kw?
  31. B

    Powerwall control

Thank you. That is exactly what I want to achieve. Yes, my EV is a Model S. My charger has a setting which will allow it to charge at minimum rate (1.4 kw) unless the solar is providing more than that, in which case it will match the solar. Starting that as soon as I wake up, or even using...
  32. B

    Powerwall control

That is what I feared. But yes, a good point, I could just force a charge of the EV for about the time I expect the sun to come up, especially if I don't think I will have drained the pwoerwall over night.
  33. B

    Charge rate and ambient temperature

That was short lived. Now it won't charge above 4 kw again. It is a lovely warm morning here, so I am not sure this is temperature related.
  34. B

    Powerwall control

I have searched for this elsewhere, but cannot find an answer. I have a PV system installed and a power wall on order. I read on a different forum that the power wall would take all available surplus power until it was at 100%. Is there anyway that I can set or program it give priority to...

    Charge rate and ambient temperature

2014 85 kw. Over the weekend we had quite low temperatures and it refused to charge quicker than 16 A. However, yesterday it was warmer and it charged at 32A 7 kw which is what the charger is meant to do. Maybe one of those things? This was the first week with the charger and before then the...

    Charge rate and ambient temperature

Last night it charged for 7 hours, but never went above 16 A. I would have expected the battery to warm itself in that time frame? I agree it may be the Zappi, but just wanted to make sure this wasn't normal model S behaviour before telling them they had a fault.
  37. B

    Charge rate and ambient temperature

I have searched for the answer on this, but cannot find anything related. Apologises if I have missed the obvious. We have had the S since mid December and until have been charging it with a 3 pin plug (16 A 4 kw). It hasn't been an issue as it does a very low mileage, typically less than 50...

    4WD doesn't mean you're invincible

I agree that had he let his wheels rotate he would have given himself a bit of a chance and possibly even been able to steer. My point was that once it set off down there, it wasn't going to stop even on the best tyres in the world. The bloke (or lady) filming people but not warning them...

    4WD doesn't mean you're invincible

I run winter tyres and have done for a long time. They make a real different in the snow and cold conditions generally. But, they would have made no difference in that scenario. It was clearly sheet ice under a very thin layer of snow. I had a similar experience (not in a Tesla) a few winters...

New owner buying a used MS questions

You can get CCS or V3 chargers which are third party, i.e. not Tesla. They are still fast, but not free. In fact, quite pricey. But fast if you happen to need some charge.
  41. B

New owner buying a used MS questions

I think I read somewhere that free supercharging doesn’t apply if using CCS. Can anyone confirm this? It was free on the one occasion I used it, just to check it worked. The newer cars that have CCS as standard don't have free supercharging so that could be causing a bit of confusion.

Car charger for use with solar.

That depends on no export meter and feed in tariff? We will have an export meter and our current tariff only gives a rubbish export rate. It does, however, have 7 hours of cheap rate over night. As we will be using more than we make, then I am not too concerned about the rubbish export and...

Car charger for use with solar.

Having been researching the market, the only people I know of who pay more than 5 p kw for your solar power are Octopus. That is 8 p when you buy from them, or 8 p when they buy from you. I think the car will absorb all spare power so I wont be selling much back to the grid.

New owner buying a used MS questions

When I had my conversion done, I asked what they actually did to the car as they could have just given me the adapter? They replied that they altered the car so that it could charge faster when using CCS rather than type 2. I am not sure whether that was a hardware or software mod, but my...

Car charger for use with solar.

We have gone with the Zappi. The above is all useful info, thank you. It also leads me to the next question. Having read the Zappi Manual last night, one of the setting for eco charging is minimum stop / start delay. I had assumed to set this at a minimum so to optimise avoiding charging...

New owner buying a used MS questions

Welcome to the OP. We bought a similar age Model S (with similar mileage) in December. The initial ownership experience was similar to yours with regard to claiming car ownership etc. We normally charge to 80% and it gives a range of 190 miles, so your 225 miles for 100% would strike me as...

That fills me with confidence. We will have 10.5 kw from two arrays. & only one car to charge. Thanks for your input.
