Open Vehicle Monitor System (OVMS) - Technical Discussion

OK, so the MAC address specification seems to work. I'll have to drive away and drive back to confirm. Does the Control for "Features" and "Parameters" mean anything anymore, or is stuff like "CAN Write" and Cooldown and ACC #1 obsolete? thanks!

Open Vehicle Monitor System (OVMS) - Technical Discussion

OK, I'll try the MAC address specification thing. At this location, the Extender's network has the stronger signal. So I'm guessing that somehow OVMS is not able to use that, even though other devices are using it. I may have to force it to the main router's (weaker) signal.

Open Vehicle Monitor System (OVMS) - Technical Discussion

I think my OVMS is having trouble connecting to WiFi because I have a Wireless Extender and so it looks to OVMS that there are two networks with the same SSID. It connects at friend's houses just fine, and if I unplug the wireless extender it also works fine - but I need the extender to reach...

    Roadster 3.0

OK, someone off-board pointed out that the "same cells as before" probably doesn't refer to the original cells as I interpreted it to mean, but same cells as the initial 3.0 battery upgrades. If so, I have no evidence to confirm or deny that claim. However, the firmware is clearly not 8 years...

    Roadster 3.0

Almost certainly not, and No and No: First, think about it: If the cells are the same and the firmware is the same, then what is telling them to charge to 4.35v? Second, from where is Tesla sourcing cells that were first available in 2006? I'm not sure if they were LG or Panasonic...

    Roadster 3.0

My second-gen 3.0 setup is running OK on battery temps, but my PEM still runs towards the hotter side, causing the fans to come on sooner and for longer than my original pack setup. I have the dual blower retrofit, which is supposed to keep things cooler, but it is louder - which is a shame...

Question regarding Bosal 2" Receiver Adapter

OK, I misunderstood what you meant by "worst position." But that's because that's not how Bosal or anyone specs these things. The sticker says: "Max vertical load for max 2 bikes" so that would seem to preclude using the worst positions in a 4 bike rack. There are 5 bike racks out there, too -...
  9. smorgasbord

Question regarding Bosal 2" Receiver Adapter

No, 4 bikes is the worst since that moves the center of mass further away from the car, assuming when you load 2 bikes you load them at the closest to the car positions, which most people would.
  10. smorgasbord

Question regarding Bosal 2" Receiver Adapter

Well, just because the Tesla vertical arm is 32" long doesn't mean that the center of mass of the combined bike rack and bikes is anywhere near that distance. I believe the center of mass is what should be used in the torque calculation. For instance, using a 40 lbs platform bike rack that holds...

Roadster Charger not working - how to take it apart?

I hesitate to ask, but since the picture you included doesn't show it, are you sliding the gray button towards the car? It won't charge until you do. If that's not the issue, then look at the body of the charger and tell us if the green/red lights are lit and/or blinking. The UMC also has a...

    Replacing the 12V aux Battery

Looking at sizes, the YTX9-BS is, I think, the standard size for V2+ Roadsters. Those are 5.9" Long, 3.4" Wide & 4.2" with Positive on left, Negative on right. Noco says this model is the right replacement. Data Sheet says charging temp supported down to -10ºC. But, sheet also says the battery...

    Replacing the 12V aux Battery

I don't yet need another 12v battery, but I came across these. Anyone know if one of these lithium replacements would be suitable for a v2.5 Roadster? Or, should I just continue to stick with AGM style lead-acid batteries? I think I'm on my second after 11 years. I know from experience that...

    Brad Templeton's F rating of Tesla's FSD

We've lost the context of the original statement: Which, by mentioning that others use 3D data, is saying that the "LIDAR grayscale image" is 2D. The word "image" itself is inconsistent with the "point cloud" phrase typically used to describe what lidar produces, which is 3D. And note that...

    Brad Templeton's F rating of Tesla's FSD

Mobileye retains old data longer than Tesla. Some of that data is 25 years old, according to Mobileye. Tesla doesn't need to retain it all. Tesla simply tells the vehicles what it wants when it wants it. Mobileye doesn't have that opportunity since almost no OEMs let ME push OTA updates to the...

    Brad Templeton's F rating of Tesla's FSD

They don't return 2D grayscale images, as was claimed. Storing such images on vehicles to aid in identifying where the vehicles is is not a scalable solution, as I described. I was reporting on how Nvidia itself says their maps are generated, which include a variety of methods. The better maps...

    Brad Templeton's F rating of Tesla's FSD

    1) There is no such thing as a "LIDAR grayscale image." LIDAR sensors return an uncolored 3D point cloud. Any desired shading/colorization must be added as a post-processing step using either additional input sources and/or AI that uses multiple frames to figure out which points are a thing...

    Brad Templeton's F rating of Tesla's FSD

The "used properly" caveat is important here. It's easy as a Monday-morning quarterback to say when to use/not use the maps, it's harder in real-time while driving. We agree the maps are useful as a predictor of what is was there, but I believe the car has to always be prepared to override that...
  21. smorgasbord

    Brad Templeton's F rating of Tesla's FSD

There are many contradictions in this. First, the car sensors win over the map. But, then trust the map because it was made with more data and more CPU. But, then maybe the map is out of date. But then the map was made with better sensors and angles (from non-frequently visiting sources). And...

    Brad Templeton's F rating of Tesla's FSD

Since you say vehicles today sometimes can't tell what lanes are really there then how do they know when to trust what they're seeing over what the map says? The only possible answer lies in the neural net score certainty percentage. If the car is very uncertain about what it's seeing then...

    Roadster 3.0

The problem with "if it's not broke, don't fix it" is that when it does break, Tesla may not want, or be able, to perform the upgrade. Originally, my plan was to continually defer the actual upgrade (after putting down the $5k deposit) as long as my battery gave me decent range, but when the...

    Roadster 3.0

I was in the same situation and had the same thoughts, but my decision was to reserve the 3.0 battery pack and then defer when my turn came up. That meant I skipped the initial faster-deteriorating packs and just recently got my upgraded pack even though my battery was still pretty decent (13x...

    Roadster 3.0

Just got a call from Tesla. They decided to replace the PEM with another new PEM. They claim all is good, but temps outside are pretty low, so I may not know for certain until Spring. Anyway, I'm picking up the car soon now.

    Roadster 3.0

To bring this back to the 3.0 upgrade: • My car is still in service hell diagnosing the overheating problem, despite the technician being able to pull logs from two of the overheating events. • Tesla did agree to sell me back my old battery and PEM for a "core charge." I promptly turned them...

    Roadster 3.0

As I suspected, Tesla was unable to find anything wrong. That didn't stop them from calling me up today to tell me that "it's fixed" and come on down to pick it up. They've had the car over 3 weeks now. When I asked them what was done, well, they checked the fan and it was fine and they checked...

    Roadster 3.0

That's probably not my issue, as the PEM cools properly when not being pushed. Essentially, I live at an elevation of 2250'. So, driving up the mountain to get home has always put a load on my car, even though the speeds are under 40 mph. That said, I never ever got to the point where the PEM...

    Roadster 3.0

Well, that's the situation I'm in right now. First problem was that a cable inside the battery wasn't attached properly, so I had to bring the car back (it shutdown on the drive to the SC). Now the PEM is overheating on roads and outside temps that it never overheated on before. So, back it goes...

On the second charging attempt, my car threw a bunch of warning/error messages. My car is going back into the Service Center tomorrow. They think the "firmware didn't take." I did try a full charge that night and it only charged to 157, which is what my old battery charged to. I also got an "ESS Temperature Sensor Fault" (ID: 14) message.

    Roadster 3.0

That's weird. I dropped my car off with something like 130 miles of Standard Range and they didn't bat an eye and as far as OVMS was telling me, did not drain the battery before removing it from the car.

    Roadster 3.0

OK, so I just picked my car up with the 3.0 battery upgrade but no 3.0 badge. Second thing I noticed was that OVMS was showing 208 Ideal miles at 93% in MAX RANGE mode. Hmm... I did open the trunk, and the new battery shell has a label with "ASY, HV BATTERY, 3.0 ROADSTER 2.X" label. The...

Tesla Valuation Based on 5 Year Outlook

We all expect to have Tesla Energy somehow disrupt energy generation/storage, but as you said, Tesla hasn't been executing well there.
