    All discussion of Nikola Motors

Romeo was on the verge of bankruptcy, and Nikola was basically forced to bail them out. They still have some time before Proterra will be supplying packs. Nikola isn't a good stock to try to time, because most retail investors still around aren't looking at the company rationally. Full...

Hey, at 9000+lbs, you gotta cut weight somewhere.

I saw this earlier, but without the detail. He just can't help himself, it would seem.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

He's gone off the rails lately. Everything is a liberal attack. Granted, there are progressives bad mouthing him, but Republicans have been doing that for years. *shrugs*

Do you want Tesla to offer Solar Roof option on their cars?

No, it's entirely pointless for the vast majority of people.
  6. JohnSnowNW

SpaceX vs. Everyone - ULA, NG, Boeing, Lockheed, etc.

Call me skeptical, but I'm betting it gets pushed to 2023.

Advice on a solar quote in MN.

Just updating as we've gotten another quote from a different installer. Panels: 49 REC400AA Inverter: Enphase 8+ Size: 19.6kW Expected usage coverage 45% Cost: $62k (before rebate) So, the design needs to be tweaked, because the initial panel placement was based on aerial photos and also a...

Advice on a solar quote in MN.

Good question. We bought an 8200 sq. ft. house 10 months ago that is essentially powered almost entirely by natural gas...I'm not sure how we're using this much electricity either. We have all LED lighting, but we also have 7 refrigerators (5 are small beverage fridges), two BEVs, 300 gallon...

Advice on a solar quote in MN.

I would say we are more keen to go the microinverter route. Let's say that we're comfortable with covering 50% of our needs, thus reducing the panel amount. Do you feel this is worth considering, or would it be better to try to maximize our usage? And, thanks again for the response.
  10. JohnSnowNW

Advice on a solar quote in MN.

Thanks, no this is pretty typical I would think. Our roof is multi-tiered, but no crazy angles or anything. I'm surprised to hear you would be quoting almost half the amount...does that include the 26% federal rebate? Thanks for the input, and if you have any advice when trying to negotiate...

Advice on a solar quote in MN.

Tesla doesn't offer install services here, so I've been looking at other installers in the area. Today I got my first initial quote for a system, and was just wondering if anyone with experience could comment on the numbers. Here's the proposal: Panels: 89 Q-Cell 360 Inverter: Enphase 7+ Size...

    Hummer EV

It's great that there are more options. It's just that GM didn't have to design the Hummer EV to be this energy hungry, they chose to. I can understand the attraction of the HUMMER, but I don't think anyone can make a reasonable argument for its practicality.
  13. JohnSnowNW

    Hummer EV

Well, the Rivian R1T seems to also be a particularly capable off-roader, with similar range and seating capacity, with greater towing capacity...while weighing almost 2,000 lbs less. Certainly, you can build an EV off-roader that weighs less, and is more efficient, than the Hummer.

    Why no Supercharger pricing signs?

Do people actually drive around looking at signs to decide which station to fuel at? I thought I was relatively frugal, but I never once did this. I simply went to whichever station was more convenient.
  15. JohnSnowNW

    Hummer EV

*sigh...The Hummer is just as absurd as its ICEV counterpart. I do hope you enjoy the vehicle, but I find it completely obscene as an EV.

    Minnesota Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

Yup, I'm aware of that charger, but it's not really fast enough for how we use it. A Supercharger in Grand Marais will help anyone coming up from Duluth that plans to go into the BWCA via Gunflint, or continuing on into Canada or coming from Canada on 61...or really just traveling around the...

    Minnesota Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

I guess I'll leave this comment every year when they update: Still waiting on the Grand Marais Supercharger, Tesla.

    Politics - Quarantine Thread

I think it's bad to invest money emotionally, so perhaps this is a good idea for you personally. As for me, I'm not a fan of Elon's politics, but I also don't believe he sold me a vehicle, nor do I feel driving a Tesla is showing him support. Enjoy your Rivian.

Bubble in headrest, Tesla might be caused by interior cleaner/conditioner

If this was a design flaw in the material WAY more people would have this issue. You've gotten 2 separate headrest bubbles and you "clean the interior often." We've owned our Model 3 with black interior since 2018, and a Model Y with white interior since 2020, neither has been cleaned often...

    Who has ordered?

If you're waiting on a Cybertruck there is no way to come away from this earnings call as anything other than disappointed. I don't necessarily "need" the Cybertruck this year, but I sure as hell "want" it...and even as a TSLA investor I don't give two shiats about Optimus. Anywho, my advice...

    Hydrogen vs. Battery

Motor Trend laying out the hard truths of life with an FCEV. These issues aren't going to get better with more stations, and it's ridiculous to think that the only solution is to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to build out stations solely to account for the fact that ~40% of stations are...

A lot in common between Fisker and Nikola Motors, IMHO. Best of luck.

    Hydrogen vs. Battery

https://m.cafcp.org/ Relevant to this topic: as of this second only about 60% of the H2 stations are online.
  24. JohnSnowNW

    Hydrogen vs. Battery

Well, to be fair, even if BEVs only got 50mpge they still have the advantage of being fun to drive. FCEVs are...driveable.

Another front suspension control arm failure

This is unlikely to be related to the failures posted in this thread. Most likely you have issues with the upper control arm ball joint(s)...and is a relatively common problem on early Model 3s.

    Cybertruck charging

Absolutely no one asks. We installed charging at our previous 2 houses and as far as I'm aware no one that was actually interested in buying cared. Of course, the house we recently bought has 400A service, and was the first thing I looked into. That said, I can't see much of a use case for...

    Cybertruck charging

I have not heard of any such leaks, but if there is only one and assume it's driver's side like every other Tesla, wouldn't the simplest solution be to add another charger or outlet on the opposite wall of your current one?

    Supercharger - Carlton, MN

So, I ended up charging in Duluth on the trip up last week, but skipped it on the way down (charged and hiked at Tettegouche State Park). I arrived in Duluth and was able to snag the last two spots on the way up. Ended up moving both our cars from the stalls before we were ready to continue the...

    Supercharger - Carlton, MN

Well, it's unfortunate that it won't be ready by this weekend. Guess we'll be jockeying for position with everyone else in Duluth. Maybe it will be ready next weekend...

Model Y: Do I have a suspension issue?

Just an idea, but I too was disappointed with how my Model Y was acting at Hwy speed. What ended up being the issue was "Lane Departure Avoidance." It was always fighting my input, and made it seem like I was having to constantly correct the cars heading...and the car was resisting. So, if you...

    Supercharger - Carlton, MN

I have exactly 22 days before I need this the SC to be finished, and then 29 days until I'll need it again. Keeping a close eye on the progress...especially for the latter need as I'll be coming back down through Duluth during All Pints North...and was rather concerned about competing for 4...

Mach-E road trip becomes a charging fiasco...

BEVs account for ~4% of global automotive sales. It has always been an absurd argument to state that competitors in the BEV segment will reduce Tesla's market share. Even if you account for all the new BEV models coming out it's still a paltry number compared to the number of different ICEV...

Perhaps they can design a system that can actually land on the moon during this protest period.
  42. JohnSnowNW

    Minnesota Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

This is absolutely fantastic news! I'm always anxious when going up to Grand Marais due to the fact that there are only 4 stalls in Duluth...and nowhere to really wait in line if it's busy. I'll actually be going up towards in end of July, so I'd be great if they can stick to that time frame...

Cybertruck or Model S come the long range battery (520 miles) in late 2020/early 2021

My understanding, and it certainly could be outdated information, was that the Plaid+ was the only version getting the new batteries allowing the 500+ range. Eventually it's going to trickle down, but I thought battery production was the choke point, and both the Semi and Cybertruck would take...

Cybertruck or Model S come the long range battery (520 miles) in late 2020/early 2021

I assume money isn't the concern here, since the 500+ Model S costs more than 2x as much as a Tri-Motor Cybertruck?
