Anything better then pilot sport 4s tires?

There are tires with more grip, but they will wear really really fast and be potentially dangerous in standing water. Nothing really "Better" overall in the summer performance category.
  2. jackmott

Is the recommended 42 PSI working well?

I wouldn't go any lower on the 20s", as your already high risk of wheel damage on potholes will get even higher. I have 18s on my M3P and it does get a bit more comfy if you drop it down to 38 instead of 42 with the downside of a loss in efficiency. Also keep in mind if you go too low you risk...

    My first tire change

it requires more car with placing the lifting points, depending on the type of lift it can be a total non issue or a bit of a risk.

Model 3 2023 updates? Or what would you guys like to see?

I don't know how Tesla makes/gets their refurb packs. I expect the bolt can handle mismatched cells/modules better because more power is available than the motor ever draws. Which, that is certainly a valid design goal. Give up on being as fast as a corvette in exchange for some pack...

Model 3 2023 updates? Or what would you guys like to see?

Man I'm really tempted to sell mine for a profit and then try to find a MSRP bolt and then just bathe in money for fun i Yeah we have all seen videos of them being serviced, by Gruber motorsports and others. Unfortunately this is almost always going to be a temporary repair. When you remove a...

Model 3 2023 updates? Or what would you guys like to see?

This is for a halo M3 CSL style car so not really a concern. Supposedly the gigacast chasis doesn't actually change the repair cost equation any. The kind of accidents that screw up the castings would also total a normal car. This is according to engineers in the industry I've seen talk about...

Model 3 2023 updates? Or what would you guys like to see?

Looking at the plaid rear cradle here: Seems like there is still lots of halfshaft at each end. Maybe can't be shrunk without ruining suspension geometry? Oh and I suppose, duh, the halfshafts need to be long enough for the suspension to be able to move without them binding up I guess.

Hit a pothole and got 2 flats on my Model 3 Performance

Could be too that supply line issues kinda threw a wrench in things. Like they wanted to keep Pilots but the price got to high or they couldn't get them at all.

Hit a pothole and got 2 flats on my Model 3 Performance

Y'all got all kinds of objections to the Uberturbines but here is mine: Needs to be left and right versions, one side has to be less aero than the other as is! (nevermind that my current wheels have the same problem)
  12. jackmott

Hit a pothole and got 2 flats on my Model 3 Performance

Suppose they added $500 to the cost of the car to drop 15lbs of wheel mass. That would improve highway range by about 0.3 miles. Now there might be other good reasons to go forged, like so when people hit a pothole the rim is bent instead of cracked, which maybe can be repaired safely. *shrug*
  13. jackmott

Model 3 2023 updates? Or what would you guys like to see?

We would have to do some kind of innovative engineering like: make the car wider shrink the plaid rear power-train package a bit
  14. jackmott

Hit a pothole and got 2 flats on my Model 3 Performance

Turns out wheel mass doesn't really affect range appreciably. Yes I know it is rotational weight, yes I know it is unsprung weight, yes I've done the math. Yes I can show my work. Once you know that the choices of OEMs seem a lot less crazy, when it comes to wheel mass. Better places to spend...

Hit a pothole and got 2 flats on my Model 3 Performance

Like many seemingly bad design decisions on EVs, it is probably a function of trying to maximize range. Though I don't know why they make the 20" wheels half an inch wider....
  16. jackmott

Model 3 2023 updates? Or what would you guys like to see?

Yep and think about some of the subtleties of this: You have like 700hp potentially from the 2 motors Since you can't launch hard anyway, you can adjust the gearing so power doesn't decline at high speed as much You save the mass of two open diffs, and two half shafts that you can delete, and...

Model 3 2023 updates? Or what would you guys like to see?

I want a gigacast chassis with structural pack that actually pulls some mass out of the car. Then I want the P edition to get serious. Dual rear motor package from a plaid, no front motor. Composite roof inside of glass, carbon fiber body panels to replace all the steel ones, aluminum trunk...

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

People will always spend as much money and effort as they have at the pointy end. At least you could opt not to swap tires between runs and still compete with Daddio....if you somehow had the talent.
  20. jackmott

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

Still seems cheaper and less hassle to me. You can more practically put your race wheels on at home and drive to the event. People aren't cording them in a single run as we used to do with hooisers on camber challenged stock cars. Probably less bushings and chassis welds being destroyed too.
  21. jackmott

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

The politics of this is always shifting. One day in the future the Model 3 will be a in class where you like how things are and something new will come along that is quicker or too close and we will be mad. The OTA update added power and track mode, having a car suddenly transform a couple...

Effect of wider tires on range

Model 3 SR+ LFP Battery Range, Degradation, etc Discussion

It will be great if LFP can get to the same energy density of NCA. Would be great to have a safer, longer lasting, easier to manage battery without the ~200lbs weight penalty.

2022 Model Y 4680 Structural Pack is "Amazing", Says Munro & Associates

It looks incredibly easier/cheaper for them to build. But not clear if there is any end user benefit yet! Curious to get a detailed breakdown of mass/rigidity changes due to the gigacasting and structural pack.

Hit a pothole and got 2 flats on my Model 3 Performance

I once got a set of forged wheels for a subaru and it is true they were not as brittle when I hit a pothole. But, the rim still bent! I'm not sure how often the better material properties of a forged wheel really help on a sharp impact, when the outer edge of the rim is so thin. and If it does...

Rear camber issue caused Pilot Sports to fail at 24k miles (M3P+)

Doing alignments every 12k is normally not necessary. But some cars have crappier adjustment than others. Hopefully the model 3 rear camber and toe isn't getting out of whack in 12k miles. But if you bonk any curbs or otherwise pound your suspension real hard, it can be a good idea to get it...

Range Loss Over Time, What Can Be Expected, Efficiency, How to Maintain Battery Health

Is this something that happens when cells are at or above their minim rated voltage? Because 0% on the car is well above 0volts for any cell.

Range Loss Over Time, What Can Be Expected, Efficiency, How to Maintain Battery Health

Its just some kind of wrong received wisdom that lithium ion cells don't like to be at low states of charge. Probably because they can brick when they go *below* their 0% state of charge.

charge [rate] drops by 50% on a NEMA 14-50 plug

Check that next time, that indicates it detected a hot plug and reduced charging rate as a result. It is a common issue. Not sure if due to faulty sensor or 14-50 plugs that are set up badly. You could split the difference by manually setting the amps to 24, so at least you get that instead of...

    M3P vs MYP

There isn't really any better cornering dynamics with the M3P, except that you can turn track mode on. But the way track mode works it isn't practical to use it outside of an autocross/race track situation usually.
  35. jackmott

2022 Model Y 4680 Structural Pack is "Amazing", Says Munro & Associates

Battery pack swap is definitely a quicker/easier job than an engine swap, provided Tesla lets you do it. Pack is more expensive than like a Honda civic engine but not so much more expensive than a 500 horsepower engine. So kinda hard to compare the relative costs
  36. jackmott

    Michelin Pilot Sport EV [tires]

There is also the PS4 without the S at the end, which ranks a B on efficiency, while being very close to the S version on grip. Comes in Tesla sizes and with acoustic foam too. I've been running these since I got my M3P. Cheaper tire, too!
  37. jackmott

2022 Model Y 4680 Structural Pack is "Amazing", Says Munro & Associates

So we have some reports that at least early 4680 cells have no silicon, which hurts density by about 10%. This might explain the weight/range of the new Model Y standard model not showing much sign of weight reduction. But *why* no silicon?
  38. jackmott

    M3LR Ride Quality

Could be due to different tires, tire pressures, and/or because the M3 LR is heavier. Suspension is definitely different but I doubt it is engineered to be comfier.

Question on performance in relation to charge

Autocross: No noticeable issues with power at most venues, since speeds are low. At least from 95% to 70% nothing noticeable. For a track day you will get power limited from battery heat before you lose power from SOC if you don't have the cooling on. Maybe not on a cool day, would certainly...

Question on performance in relation to charge

Peak power goes down pretty much immediately, the lower the charge, the less power. But at low speeds you will still hit the max allowed power for quite a while. On the highway when you punch it, the difference between 30% and 70% is big.

Range Loss Over Time, What Can Be Expected, Efficiency, How to Maintain Battery Health

Aero testing by Porsche, Tesla, and FastWheels and others all show a pretty consistent story, the more you cover up the "holes" in the wheels, the better. This guy reviews Porsche's testing:

Tire rolling resistance listing in Consumer Reports

Some low crr tires achieve it in part by heaving less tread depth to begin with, so any energy related money savings may be lost on more frequent tire changes.

    MPP BBK energy consumption increase?

Are you worried about some sort of brake drag issue? Or are you concerned the weight or size of the rotor would affect range?
  44. jackmott

    Tires too narrow on Uberturbine

The energy consumption difference from the weight turns out to be pretty minimal (like 1 mile extra highway range), which is why Tesla doesn’t bother making them light. However, on a narrower wheel the tire might end up narrower too which would help maybe. I second the suggestion to go with 19s...
  45. jackmott

    Tires too narrow on Uberturbine

You could get an 8” wide wheel that would be a lot lighter and the tire would fit better, but what do you hope to gain from the reduced weight?

  47. jackmott

    Model 3 efficiency

You can increase downforce and reduce drag at the same time with spoilers. Now for the pedantic, the M3 isn't going to have any downforce at all, the spoiler is just reducing upforce really. At best.
  48. jackmott

    Mobile connector or wall connector

Wall charger is nice to have anyway so that you can leave the mobile connector in the car for trips. Also if you do a wall charger with max amps, you can charge a bit faster than a mobile connector, which will also tend to be more efficient, as the car gets done charging and back to sleep quicker.
  49. jackmott

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

performance has the same range if you swap the same tires on
  50. jackmott

    Model 3 efficiency

Wings usually add drag, spoilers usually reduce it. This of course depends on the wing and or spoiler being actually engineered aerodynamic decices rather than aesthetic though and I have no idea which is the case here. It certainly looks like it would be drag reducing to my only slightly...
