    Russia/Ukraine conflict

I would have to do a couple days of modeling to really answer definitively but I can give my initial impression. I’m not sure I agree that China is doing something nefarious. I don’t think there are any significant nat gas or LNG sanctions being applied by Europe. This means that marketers of...

    Russia/Ukraine conflict

A few counterpoints, I hesitate to even entertain the James Bond-ish conspiracy theory that a US entity would attack EU infrastructure, but in terms of Option 3 above, Asia is the price maker for US LNG, not Europe. The European import market has had to rise to compete with Asian pricing for...

    Russia/Ukraine conflict

I’m far from an expert on the nuke issue but I’ve seen some actual experts say that the tactical nukes require some transport and setup to use on Ukraine. Presumably the west has communicated to Ru that the instant they move from their current spots we’d consider targeting them? If Ru is going...

    Russia/Ukraine conflict

$10B might be a little steep, assuming that’s USD. My guess is that the offshore part of NS2 or NS1 probably cost in that range for the whole of construction. In my experience, a subsea rupture repair for those lines is going to be in the 8 to 9 figure range, USD. Depending on the nature of the...

    Russia/Ukraine conflict

Pipeline company employee here. My guess is so that Gazprom can declare force majeure. This sets up the Russians/Gazprom in a more favorable legal position related to denying service. In North America, a customer who has contracted for pipeline transportation capacity under a take-or-pay...

    SpaceX Internet Satellite Network: Starlink

$5k per month for service. Way cheaper than Inmarsat or KVH plans but still a spicy meatball for recreational use (which is obviously not the intended customer here).

Rough Estimate for Cost/Time of Repairs On Bumper + Rear Quarter Panel Damage?

This repair is going to be in the thousands and you’ll probably be in a rental car for at least a month. No way in heck I would ever take that kind of risk.

    CHADMEO

It isn't on Tesla's website anymore. I believe they have discontinued sales in North America of the adapter. I only see it on Tesla Australia where it does state that it is not compatible with the 3 or Y. But a whole other market / continent, so I wouldn't consider that applicable.

Navigate on Autopilot is Useless (2018.42.3)

I recall a similar situation with autopilot hardware 2. It was a considerable regression from the Mobileye package for at least a year. Eventually, though, it did gain momentum and left the previous version in the dust.

"12 Volt" Power Outlet in my Tesla Model S Plaid Has Burned Out 3 ~$1000 Escort Redline 360c detectors

I believe it actually says amps. 12A continuous and 16A peak current draw. It does note in a warning below that any devices plugged in must support 16v operation.

"12 Volt" Power Outlet in my Tesla Model S Plaid Has Burned Out 3 ~$1000 Escort Redline 360c detectors

Most cars will deliver > 12v. A higher voltage is needed to charge the accessory battery. Typical is in the 13.5v to 14.5v range for lead acid. Newer Teslas with a lithium accessory battery are going to be higher, like in the 15v+ range. Maybe too high for a Redline. I did see on an Escort forum...

How many windshields have you replaced on your Tesla?

I suspect this plays a big part. Areas with a real winter and prolific use of road gravel come to mind.

How many windshields have you replaced on your Tesla?

0 windshields over the course of ~200,000mi driven in 11 years of combined ownership (we've been a 2 Tesla household since ~2017). I attribute to setting large following distances on open highway and immediately inspecting for and repairing chips after suspected impacts. I stash a chip repair...

2022 Apple CarPlay update vs Tesla UI

I haven’t actually, only the previous Hyundai system which wasn’t anything special and was beset by the typical lack of responsiveness, festooning with icons and scrolling menus, and a front end that was designed by someone that hasn’t used a computer since 2000. But hey, at least it isn’t the...

2022 Apple CarPlay update vs Tesla UI

From the linked article, I find Apple's claimed 79% number curious, given that iOS only has ~50% market penetration. That means 20% of car buyers want a feature they can't use. I rent at least one vehicle per week due to frequent business travel. As a result I've driven an enormous variety of...

Getting complaints about using public level 2 charger

Parsing through the grammar, he may be confusing the nature of the warning message. A later post seems to indicate that he got the daily 100% charge warning message and is mistakenly correlating that with the use of a public L2 charger.

    WH/mile?

Pavement and winds make a big difference too. When I turn onto FM2678 at Refugio going to Corpus, that terrible pavement makes my wh/mi skyrocket by like 25% compared to what it was on US 77 before. One thing to check is the state of your tires. Under inflated tires can be a huge drag. In fact...

Getting complaints about using public level 2 charger

I received a note like this from an anonymous Leaf driver at the airport chargers here in Houston. It was written in a courteous manner and just noted a “big” battery EV could deprive a smaller kWh EV from a must-have charge. I thought it was a fair point and if I have enough charge banked up...

Tesla Solar in Houston & Surrounding Area’s

In order to connect a solar system to the grid you need an interconnection agreement in place with your grid operator. This generally contains terms such as that you’ll have a system that conforms to certain design standards to protect their workers and can handle faults without messing up the...

Tesla Solar in Houston & Surrounding Area’s

If you are in TNMP's service area then you may not have access to free nights right now. TNMP's late deployment of 4g smart meters caused Retail Electric Providers to temporary (hopefully) stop offering those plans. I am in TNMP and signed up before this debacle but only for a 12 month...

They probably don’t have any install crews in the area. You can still get a solar + powerwalls setup but it’ll have to be via 3rd party.

There are a couple of CHADeMO/ CCS options now as well if you have the appropriate adapters with you. It used to be a real adventure to travel to the area in years past. Great to see some options now.

How to setup Tesla app for free nights in Texas and suggestions of plans.

That might have come from me. That’s what my buyback was with them. But that’s from earlier in the year and in TNMP so maybe different for others?

How to setup Tesla app for free nights in Texas and suggestions of plans.

Yeah base charge will allways be there. I kind of equate that as your “interconnect fee”. Just sort of the price to be connected to the grid.

How to setup Tesla app for free nights in Texas and suggestions of plans.

This is a good point. You have to scrutinize the Facts Label on all of these to see what is actually “free”. I am in TNMP service area and Amigo’s plan was indeed fully free at the time I signed up but there was at least one other RSP that only comped the energy charge.

How to setup Tesla app for free nights in Texas and suggestions of plans.

I built a little simulation model of my consumption and overlayed each plan’s details. My big gap though was that I didn’t know my solar generation because I didn’t have my panels yet. As it turns out my solar generation was better than I was estimating. I was initially more focused on a lower...

How to setup Tesla app for free nights in Texas and suggestions of plans.

Wholesale rate of $.03/kWh which isn’t great so I just mine bitcoin with my excess instead which has been working out to around ~$.25/kWh lately with the equipment I use and the current usd exchange value.

How to setup Tesla app for free nights in Texas and suggestions of plans.

I have free nights via Amigo’s 9pm-7am plan. I set up a custom plan in the app with the daytime pricing and $0 during the off peak free time. Everything automatically happens after that. Powerwalls cut off at 9:00pm sharp and then come back on at 7:00am or earlier. My power bill has been...

Texas owners: Free nights or Net metering

I had Amigo’s plan before the hoopla around TNMP’s meter swaps so it showed up on their website and under aggregator websites like powertochoose.org and the like. We got TNMP to swap our meter by calling their support phone number and hounding them to put in a service ticket to have it swapped...

Texas owners: Free nights or Net metering

Power metering isn't my engineering specialty but I do know that TNMP uses the GE 210 series smart meter. The service provider can specify which comm modules to install and powerline communications is an option, along with cellular, mesh RF, and even Ethernet. I think TNMP specs out cellular only.
  37. G

Texas owners: Free nights or Net metering

TNMP is slow rolling out 5G smart meters and when the AT&T 3g cell network shut down earlier in the year a lot of people essentially had dumb meters all of a sudden that had to be read by hand. This obviously doesn’t work for an hourly electric service. I had to call TNMP and get them to enter a...

Texas owners: Free nights or Net metering

Not sure. That’s not in my EFL from them. I’m in TNMP service area though, so maybe that’s some sort of grid operator specific charge from Centerpoint that Amigo has to pass through? I’m typically only assessed the base charge of $4.95 plus a tiny bit extra for whatever little rounding error...

Texas owners: Free nights or Net metering

16kw system with 4 Powerwalls and 2 Teslas to charge. I’m on free nights and have $.03/kWh buy back from Amigo Energy. Because of the paltry buy back rate I just mine bitcoin with my excess daytime generation instead. My monthly power bills are typically less than ~$10 and that’s with an eye...

Protecting your Tesla from nuke EMP

The United States EMP Commission did a study that found vehicles materially unaffected. These were older cars (due to the study being circa 2002) though and the study did note nuisance effects like dash malfunctions. Things I might try if I were paranoid about it: Earth grounding the body...

How much power does your home draw overnight? (Baseline energy use)

A lot of car charging overnight. We have gas heat so I have a feeling we are going to be in the 30+ kw range in summer with ac load. My off peak rate is $0.0 which is why we load shift everything.

    250Kw Supercharging nuances?

Might have been a charger that needed maintenance? I think you'll find, over your course of ownership, that you will typically get the expected charging curve barring external variables. One item to note is that the xx minutes to go timer ticks off in 5 minute increments. So even in the best...
